Garry Lyon + Jason Dunstall were heavy critics of his. You must have had your head inside your ass if you can't remember the years of critisicm he got
Yep, Gary Lyon said he'd take Zac Clarke (Freo/Ess) over Naitanui.

They're hardly criticising his ability, if anything they're criticising his lack of game time more than anything or even his "low" disposal numbers.

Did anyone take Cyril over the coals for his low disposal numbers? mmmnup nor is or has anyone for Nic Nat.

Matthews says he's going to struggle around the ground, well duh - he's been out of the top level for how long now? If that's a criticism then sneezing at the wrong time is a criticism.

What in the actual **** are you talking about. They regularly smashed him for his poor marking ability and for years

If I may rephrase, is their any grounds for criticism of Nic Nats game? There's a strong argument for "no".

In any case apart from Matthews observation which is really all it is, any criticism of NN is past.

Use the search function, there's threads on here that are highly critical of him.

Not me though, I think when he's playing he's the best tap ruckman in the league. He doesn't get the ball around the ground like the others, but he affects the play in other ways with his bulk and bullocking work.
Players start hearing big heavy dreadlocked footsteps when hes around

The footy becomes a hot potato

I'll quote from these two clowns from footy WA

Scott Watters:

"Luke Schuey has been under rated"

Pffft really? Anyone who under rates that bloke is a fool, there is no one that disputes Luke's ability. Not disputable.

Scott Cummings:

"Nic Nat has had his critics"

Show me one critic of Nic Nat Scott.

This is not up for debate Scott's, you're both wrong and those players should rightly be pi55ed at you two w******.

Seriously poor form and not helping the west teams.
everyone in wa thinks all their players are underrated.

The entire West Coast and Freo team would be in the AA if they played for Vic clubs...

As for Naitanui, I don't think I've ever seen a big name player get more unwarranted and misguided criticism than him.
Commentators expect him to be Grundy/Gawn, which just straight up isn't his go, he's very very unique for what he brings to the game.
Amazingly his biggest asset it....ruckwork!

Ask the other player mentioned in this thread (Shuey) who has the biggest impact on his game and it'll be Naitanui, I'm sure there are highlight threads of Naitanui palming it down Shuey's throat time and time again in games.

Not only that he also offers some insane pressure and follow up work after his rucking.
On the weekend he had 6 touches yet nearly had 100 Champion Data ranking points from about 60% TOG.
So his impact is massive.

Shuey is underrated, but didn't do himself any favours early in his career with his constant ducking. He's become the star player he is today because he's removed that from his game and actually tries to beat players instead of going for the free.
Early on he was very easily tagged out of games as well, which basically excludes a lot of people from rating a player (which is understandable).
But with a better midfield around him he's dealing with the tag a lot better and when he's not tagged you see exactly what he can bring.

the shupaman (thats sheppard) owns this thread. Shuey is a big game player now, very suprised he hasnt got an all australian honor. Probs just hasnt had the consistency to warrent it AA.

It's an outrage all right, you should write to the WA government.

Not setting sights high enough. I suggest writing to the United Nations.

Garry Lyon for years has potted Nic Nat at every opportunity

I think, deep down, Lyon does this because he needs to justify his club picking up Hack Watts instead of Nic Nat.

Imagine, how embarrassing it must be that Melbourne made another selection blue, so a little bit of Hairy Garry dies every time he sees Nic Nat's success.

Look, if he had just admitted that Melbourne made a mistake picking up the overrated Hack Watts, then it would be better for everyone.

(BTW, I wonder what Garry thinks of players like Daniel Rich, Stephen Hill and Michael Hurley, all who also were picked behind Jack Watts, and all who have been better than him).

Shuey is pretty underrated has been underrated by footy media and general footy fans for while. Reckon thats partly due to his overall stats (except clearances) and fantasy score's. He's always been that mid possession/high impact sort player for us.

Since 2011 he's been our most tagged mid and that with Priddis, Gaff and now Yeo. Coaches have a huge respect for him as he can boss around stoppages but then hurt the opposition with time and space. He's genuinely one of the best users of both feet .

If Yeo didn't kill it in that QF, Shuey would have been the one with tag in the GF.

To slightly buck the trend...Shuey I believe is rated about right - his best is outstanding but we don’t see it week in, week out.

Nic Nat - well obviously he has copped piles of criticism over the years. The vast majority have twigged now how amazing a player he is (when he’s on the park!) but there are still a few nuffies out there that usually judge him off a stat sheet or are clueless in general.

Has had more than 10 kicks in a game twice in his career & has had more than 5 marks 3 times in his career.

Strong argument for does nothing outside of ruck contests/clearances, can't take a mark, can't kick and has the endurance of a hamster which means West Coast have to always play a 2nd ruck.
