hearing one the big boys in Premier are in big strife both on a football front and netball.

Netball front as in no more, or at least none this year.

Hearing a couple of D1 clubs basically won’t be fielding reserves. Big struggles for clubs these days
I’ve been told tonight Woori won’t have any netball teams gone into recess, no reserves and the only reason they’ll have u19 is because they have 30 u17 players, pretty sad if it’s true

AFL Vic will no doubt sit on their hands as junior and womens participation is growing, but it would 100% be worth their while to get clubs/leagues struggling for numbers (not just AFLOE) to try and survey everyone who has stopped playing the past few years to find out why.
I'm sure they could get some Sports Sci or Recreation uni students to do it as an assignment to save on money as well lol.

This is very concerning if it does eventuate.

If clubs can't play a full roster of matches - 3rds, Ressies and Seniors along with netball - then how are canteens and bars going to operate if people won't stay a full day as there is only one or maybe two matches on. That then impacts the viability and finances of those clubs. It also makes it harder to find volunteers as the pool shrinks.

They really should have stayed at U18s and the older players who are now U19s would be playing Reserves. It won't bother the big clubs but last year only 9 of the 23 clubs (which included Narre, Pakky and Officer) could field U19s and only 6 traditional valley sides got there, and even then many games were being played on short numbers just to get a game up. It gave the impression that the league was growing but was really only growing a divide between the haves and have-nots.

The Under 18’s must be the age group going forward. This year the number of teams to field 19’s looks to be less.

Why not 19s? It’s basically what ever comp has and allows more kids to be eligible

Might suit Narre and other suburban clubs as they would have access to more 19 year olds. They also aren’t as effected by 18/19 year olds playing seniors as traditional YV clubs. Not to mention the draw of playing EFL 19’s.

Never been involved at club level obviously
Not true, been senior treasurer of a club in my younger days and fully understand the issues involved if the seniors and reserves are playing at a different venue on the same day. BUT as some one has posted if Yea are not fielding a side you can forget what I said.

The problem is that the valley doesn't have more kids, this only suits the SE growth corridor. Big clubs like Wandin and Woori couldn't even field U19s last year and Olinda only had about 14 or so players most weeks - those three clubs were the top senior clubs behind Narre. It is causing issues for valley clubs as most can't even raise an U19s side, with only 6 of 18 non-SE clubs even having a side, and there is now talk that some D1 sides may not be able to field reserves. If those top age kids play reserves instead of U19s it helps the competition stabilise its structure rather than fielding threadbare teams who get thrashed or face forfeiting each week as they scratch to get a side together.
