SEASON 2023

Should have swallow their pride months ago and combined the two lower tiers.

"Fiasco" is too light a word to describe what has been going on to the Division 2 clubs. Kinglake must feel so damned relieved to be away from all of this ongoing crap.

Wait what. Kinglake have gone? Pretty sure HQ said this wasn t happening.

Whatever happens there’s a shakeup coming. The league is not sustainable in its current form… “Division 2” was made geographic because you can’t have all clubs in a simple up/down, it’s too big an area. Berwick Springs to Alexandra is a four hour round trip which isn’t workable. Outside a couple of trips in the Gippsland League (and they’re big major clubs) it’d be the biggest trips in the state.

The northern division would have been okay but the exit of Kinglake and the likely end of Yea and Broadford have killed it.

My guess is the far northern clubs are sent elsewhere, I think the league considers its future to be in the hills and south east. I’d say the northern clubs gone, Narre gone, two smaller divisions.

The many clubs north of Alexandra, Broadford and Yea will ultimately object to them coming this way, but for those clubs to have a chance of turning it around it needs to be investigated.

Which league would the hills clubs go to? Which clubs would you be referring to?

He isnt saying the hills clubs are going anywhere.

He is saying NArre goes due to requiring a better standard of competition

Alex YEa Broadford go because the league can no longer provide a Geographic competition for them

We are left with 2 divisions that look a heap like the YVMDFL that they bent over and r**ted when the merger first occured.

Why can’t this still happen??

Only logical solution right now

At a loss as to why the AFLOE are worried about Yea and Broadford and their survival going forward. While I don’t want to see any club go into recess having these clubs in the League is surely at the detriment of traditional YV clubs who are now having to carry the burden of having to play these teams.

I believe that they have come to this conclusion but its too late for them to do anything significant about it this year.

Yarra Glenn who seem to be struggling for numbers dropping back being the likely outcome.

I think all three (alex / yea / Broadford) will be gone next year and that this will be driven by the commission.

I think the commission would prefer Narre stay and due to the RE-Affiliation with AFL Vic we will find out by June 31st what narre's intentions are. Which they have been very good at playing close to their chest over the journey, despite all the conjecture.

#christianboy #Mortlockwatcher I’m over listening to the same dribble you both keep regurgitating. How about something worth discussing? just stay silent or try watching MAFS for you drama fix.
Ata Glance think that is pretty tough on ChristianBoy and MortlockWatcher they have provided plenty of suggestions on this forum for over 6 months about how to improve the league.

It’s a forum so if you don’t want to read the dribble, don’t read it.

The league is a shambles, blind Freddy could see 6 months ago that division 2 was in trouble. To say that Kinglake was staying 😂 that Yea would have senior and reserves was wishful thinking.

On another matter, why should Alex be forced to find another league, they are a very well run club, both footy and netball. Clubs like Berwick Springs and Hallam need to suck it up and travel to Alex to play when the league goes back to 2 divisions

hearing one the big boys in Premier are in big strife both on a football front and netball.

Netball front as in no more, or at least none this year.
New netball fixture is out for Premier. Woori are not in it and Beaconsfield have returned after being dropped to D1 originally in an exchange with Berwick.

Last year Woori only had 2 sides in netball and teamed up with Healesville who also only had 2 sides.

It's certainly not their fault as a club but it's just the way it is now. People blame Hallam not wanting to challenge... the league made D2 a geographic conference for a reason, long before Hallam were around, the geographic spread of the league is too great and travelling is not feasible for local footy. People aren't taking a four-hour round trip. It's a pain in the arse for players and volunteers and visiting spectators simply won't do it.

It was okay but the exit of Kinglake and the possible folding of Broadford and Yea have made it untenable. They have nobody to play against.

They'd probably be best off in the Ovens and King with Bonnie Doon, or Kyabram District.

Unfortunately for Alexandra, the league has chased growth and that is south, while north is going the other way as clubs fold.

Distance also becomes an issue for umpires. Clubs at least know when their road trips will be at start of season when the fixture is released. Umpires find out on a Wednesday night if they're going to Alex, Yea or Broadford. Last season I did 5 of those road trips. Makes it hard if you have a dinner Sat night and need to be home by 6pm to get changed to go out. Sometimes a lot of changes are being made on a Thursday.

Also have challenges with younger boundary umpires that get recruited. They rely on parents to drive them hours away. We've had instances where the parents have told the kids to decline the appointment because it's too far away. Others have told their kid to pull out and the parent will pay the match fee to the kid so they're not out of pocket but Dad saves on petrol. Not ideal.

I've changed comps over the summer because the travel is too extensive. Keep in mind that the furthest grounds also have the lowest match fees.

Could you imagine the drive from king Valley or bright to alex.. although not sure there's many other solutions. In saying that you guys rejected bonnie doon so I'd imagine the ovens and kind would reject that move also

The demise of the Benalla league made life tough for clubs in this district.

Longwood has struggled badly in the Kyabram league and Bonnie Doon took a long time to find its footing in the O&K. Population decline saw the demise of Swanpool and Tatong and the tyranny of distance caused by the disbanding of the B&DFL and some of its former clubs has caused issues for a number of clubs and leagues.

Unfortunately, there is no simple solution to remedy this situation and the current issues facing football in most areas of the state will cause even greater headaches for administrators over the next few years.

Reading elsewhere that 4 of the Peninsula clubs are ditching their U19's. Most of the comments there are saying it's crazy not to go back to U18's. Seems to be a common theme?

Eastern (not sure about the other metro leagues) went to Under 19.5… but then adjusted the U17s to Under 17.5? It seems to make zero sense, it’s still a two year window.

I would just make the top junior grade Under 18, then the thirds at senior level can be Under 23 or something. If they’re juniors then they’re juniors, they can’t drive etc, leave them at the junior club. Come to the senior club as adults.

10 years or so ago a great little comp could’ve been made and I wonder if the fortunes of the clubs would’ve shifted if they had a suitable league to play in that put less pressure on the clubs.

Longwood, Swanpool, Tatong, Goorambat, Bonnie Doon, Thornton, Alexandra, Yea, Broadford and even Violet Town could’ve had a decent little comp where the twos would’ve almost been a social league but it heavily promoted the netball and social side of the game that’s now been lost.

Alex have always travelled, and if they want to stay in the league and travel every 2nd weekend then the precious clubs down south can travel once a season.
Stupid sweet heart deals for southern clubs should never have happened, suck it up and travel once a season

What’s the cut off for travel? An hour or hour and half what?

I’d almost bet majority of most YV clubs live no where near where they play.
