Thunder with all the uncertainity around hopefully the smart clubs would have not printed membership cards with fixtures on them
Voice of the G totally disagree, the smart clubs would have used the fixture to arrange social functions, booked venues etc.
So why put it on them, this fault lies front and centre with league HQ

Hoping for everyone’s sake Yarra Glen just replace yea fixture so there’s no rejig of div 2 fixture … I imagine div 1 will be more complex

Surely someone from Broadford can shed some light?

They announced a couple of recruits and I know quite a few that have gone. I cant possibly see how they have 2 sides.

Yea have basically no players and no coach. Why they have officially pulled out today is a mystery.

Love to check the transfers page? oh wait.

Interesting article on how they caught out Wangaratta breaching the salary cap. Reckon leagues are going to start coming harder than ever going forward on cap breaches.

They self reported

And they get to keep the Premiership.
Reckon clubs will look at that & say it’s worth going over the cap despite the other penalties they got?

No doubt they do. Guaranteed most responsible just move on and do it at the next club.

So have just read Yea statement about withdrawing their footy teams, let’s hope they can come back in 2024.

Their netball is still goi no ahead which is great but what I found interesting was that the league has moved them from division 2 into division 1, so basically just swapping Yarra Glen and Yea around. So the question I have is does this mean that Hallam and Berwick Springs are going to have to travel to Yea for netball, if so, and it’s good enough for the netballers to have to do it, then why wouldn’t footy be the same.

Thoughts?

League News | AFL North East Border (AFL NEB) confirms that Wangaratta Magpies Football Netball Club have been found guilty and penalised for breaching the 2022 Allowable Player Payment Cap, following an AFL NEB Disciplinary Committee hearing on Thursday night.

The Ovens & Murray Football Netball League club faced three charges under AFL Victoria’s Allowable Player Payment (APP) Rules, for failing to lodge player declarations or non-declared player statements correctly and exceeded the 2022 APP cap of $125,000.

For exceeding the cap, the club has been given the following sanctions:
• A fine of $28,000
• The men’s senior team will be ineligible to receive premiership match points for the first two home-and-away games of the 2023 season
• The men’s senior team have had their Total Team Points reduced for the entire 2023 season to 36, a reduction of four

Reprimands were given for the other charges.

The hearing was conducted by an independent panel appointed by the AFL NEB Commission following an integrity review of the club’s 2022 Allowable Player Payments. Based on the evidence of the review, the region charged the club in March and referred the matter to the disciplinary committee.
Anomalies in the club’s reporting had identified several issues in the management of player payments, including the over payments.

AFL NEB acknowledges that the Wangaratta Magpies FNC has also self-reported the overpayments which has resulted in the club exceeding the cap once the error had been identified and has cooperated with the Integrity Officer in the conduct of the review.

As a region, AFL NEB is committed to the integrity of the Allowable Player Payments Rules and has undertaken over 20 integrity reviews in recent years on clubs from across regional leagues. These reviews have supplemented the random internal compliance reviews of clubs conducted by AFL NEB to ensure lodgements of documents within timeframes are being adhered to.

AFL NEB, with support from AFL Victoria, will continue the practice of compliance and integrity reviews throughout 2023 and clubs can expect to be selected for the reviews. Region-based training seminars have been conducted to support clubs in the management of the Player Payments and Player Points rules to mitigate the risks associated with non-compliance and cap breaches.

The club has until the end of September to pay the fine, with funds to be put towards initiatives to support clubs including education around the salary cap and points system.

As if O&M clubs need education around salary cap & points....FFS!!!

Smell B/S, Maggies probs wont ever pay up!!!

To be honest how many clubs can afford to pay to the salary cap without running the risk of pushing their club into financial trouble? Clubs that are being run with a balance of being competitive and sustainable won’t be going over the cap. We’ve all seen the outcome when clubs have over capitalised.

Correct, which is the major reason it was brought in the first place - sustainability.

You have the big clubs in every league spending, and then others try to catch up and some destroy themselves in the process.

The EFNL is a good example, you have a small group of clubs agitating for the cap to be “returned to what is was pre COVID” - ie, doubled to $250k. Their argument is “we want to be a premier league”… which of course is bullshit, as every league in the state has a similar cap, so your league isn’t worse off.

They simply would rather just compete with the 4-5 clubs who can comfortably pay the full cap, rather than competing with 48 clubs.

Can be guaranteed the clubs that are breaching the cap the money is coming from outside the club. They are also generally fly in fly out admin and players.

Who would be breaching their cap? Most clubs are struggling to generate the revenue to justify paying overs and then still need to ensure the doors stay open. Incredibly hard to make money running a club and very topical given recent club/team departures. My guess would be many don’t break even let alone make a profit. Cutting costs (player payments) is sometimes the only logical lever to pull when you’re in the red!!

Depends on how invested you are in the club.

Depends on how invested you are in the club.

Operational & financial functions would be categorically tied together at most clubs and be closely monitored by senior positions within clubs of which I would assume are occupied by those who are deeply invested. If they aren’t then my bet is the club won’t be around long or a fall from grace isn’t far away!!
