Premierships – S5, S8, S10, S11, S20
Grand Final record - 5 wins, 1 draw, 6 losses
Season 32 record - 9 wins, 7 losses (4th)
The Furies took a while to get going in season 32 alternating wins and losses through the first eight rounds before hitting a small patch of form that saw them reel off three wins in a row against the Phoenix, Dragons and Bears. This small streak saw the Furies enter the top four for the first time in round 10 where they would stay for the remainder of the season despite fluctuating performances for the remainder of the season.
The Furies' Grand Final form has been one of the more interesting elements of Sweet FA history. The first ever Grand Final draw in the Furies' first of a record 12 Grand Finals was followed by four flags in five attempts over six seasons. Since then the Grand Final hasn't been kind to the Furies, winning just once from six attempts, including being defeated by the biggest Grand Final margin in Sweet FA history in their last attempt in season 26. Season 32 represents the Furies' longest Grand Final drought of just six seasons.
A win on Sunday would represent the end of arguably the biggest and longest running meme in Sweet FA history, #firsttosix, which has been on the table since the Wonders won their fifth premiership back in season 21.
Bastyy was kind enough to sit down with me for a chat.
Barrybran: One season, one Grand Final. This captaincy stuff is pretty easy, right? How has your journey as a captain been in season 32?
Bastyy: Got to say, don't see why anyone would complain about being a captain when it's as cruisy as this! First seasons been a bit tough on and off the board but luckily I'm surrounded by a pretty great group that makes it that much easier. The oldheads of Ned, Turbo and Wigs help when I have no idea what I'm doing, and our active posters like U2tigers, Greeney, Mister M and Frosty help make match threads interesting when I'm not around to post.
Barrybran: The Furies haven't exactly lit the world on fire this season. 11 wins, 8 losses, an extra game to get the Grand Final and no statistical leaders this season. How have the Furies managed to make it this far?
Bastyy: One week the sim loves us and we're all celebrating, the next week the sim hates us and I start to think maybe Tony Lynn 15 was right. Really I think the simmers have been pulling us by a string all season and bringing our hopes up and down. But I think in the end the sim realised how sad it made us when we lose, and no one wants to see someone like Ned_Flanders cry ever week.
Barrybran: The last time the Furies made a Grand Final they lost by a Grand Final record 87-points. You've still got seven players on the list from that day. What is the feeling like inside the Furies camp ahead of this week?
Bastyy: We have two goals this week, either we win and hoist the cup, or we lose by 88 points. I can't see us leaving this grand final without setting some sort of record
Barrybran: How do you rate your chances? What will be the key to the Furies holding up the cup on Sunday?
Bastyy: Honestly I can't see a world where we don't win, mostly because I don't want to live in a world where serial_thrilla can say he won a grand final over me. Our biggest chance of winning this week comes from ImissFrosty intercepting every mark, and I have to kick at least four goals. Would be nice if U2tigers manages to play the game without hurting himself and going to the bench in the 1st quarter like he always seems to do.
