Welcome to Heritage Round!

Of course we all know that the first qooty clash between Baghdad and West Coast (then known as the Bigfooty Bombers and the Seventh Wonders respectively) was in round 3 of season 4. In that match the Wonders were victorious – 16.16 (112) to 12.9 (81). The only person I recognise from the teams is ant555, but a Rob did play for the Bombers as did someone named pantsless, while there’s a sante from 2003 for the Wonders.

But while qooty results can come and go, I’m here today to tell you about the actual origin story behind these two teams are facing off in Heritage Round, as opposed to tell you about teamsheet timeframes which you all know by now. Please consider…

Lost (Not Lost)

On the 12th of August 2004, a plane breaks apart in mid-air, scattering survivors on a remote island somewhere in the Weshall Sea. Forty-eight of these survivors, after the initial shock passes, attempt to set up a camp and figure out where they are but are disturbed by loud roaring noises and crashing trees emanating from the nearby jungle.

Three of the survivors, Metalcrusher, BLUEALLTHRU, and Pugsley, set out to find the plane's cockpit. An injured pilot (VeinGlorious) tells them that the plane had lost radio contact six hours after takeoff, turned back for Fiji, and hit turbulence. The plane was a thousand miles off course when it crashed. The Monster (ClarkeM) rips the pilot from the cockpit, consequently killing him, and the remaining three run for the beach.

Metalcrusher, a rocket surgeon from Kalgoorlie, discovers a mugshot of BLUEALLTHRU, with whom he has begun a close friendship. After initial mistrust and the death of the Marshal (Brenton Davy), whom he tries to save, both of them agree to start afresh.

One of the survivors, a former Iraqi Republican Guard communications officer named CursingFijian, attempts to repair the transceiver from the plane. A few survivors (CursingFijian, Kilroy, KohPhi, Pugsley, BLUEALLTHRU, and Tony Lynn 15) trek high into the mountains in an attempt to get a signal and are attacked by a polar bear along the way. When they finally do turn on the transceiver, they learn that its signal is being blocked by a transmission of a woman's voice speaking in French, which KohPhi translates as: "I'm alone now, on the island alone. Please someone come. The others are dead. It killed them. It killed them all." The message repeats with an automated count implying, according to CursingFijian's calculation, that it has been repeating for over sixteen years and five months. Coupled with the VeinGlorious' last words, the survivors' hopes of rescue are dampened; and despite the group trying to keep the discovery undercover, the news spreads through the camp throughout the first few days.

When food supplies run low, RobR leads the first hunting party for boar. As BLUEALLTHRU's resourcefulness comes in handy, Jabba73 and The Jesus, father and son, struggle to get along. On the sixth day, a woman drowns, and a young man named Kilroy tries to prove his worth. Metalcrusher goes on a spiritual quest when he begins to see visions of his deceased father on the island, and begins a science versus faith conflict with RobR. Eventually, the group of survivors split in half, whilst a few moved inland to a cluster of caves with fresh water and protection. Others stayed at the beach in hopes of rescue, and they moved once again when the tide began to carry the wreckage of the plane into the sea. Metalcrusher becomes the de facto leader. Intense rivalries emerge when disagreements on allocation of supplies becomes an issue, especially between Metalcrusher, CursingFijian and Tony Lynn 15. As conflict comes to head, Tony Lynn 15 is tortured and then accidentally stabbed in the arm by CursingFijian, who then leaves the camp in shame for hurting Tony Lynn 15. He begins a journey of walking down the beach alone, telling Metalcrusher not to come after him.

CursingFijian finds a cable running out of the ocean and into the jungle. When he follows it, he encounters damicky, the French-speaking woman from the repeating transmission. She tells CursingFijian how she came to be on the Island, and implies she killed those she arrived with. CursingFijian eventually escapes with some of her papers, with potential knowledge of a group of hostile individuals, The Wonders, on the Island, who kidnapped damicky's baby daughter. Over the course of the season, damicky has other intermittent contact with the survivors.

Trying his best to make life on the island as comfortable as possible, Noidenous conducts a census of the survivors when The Greatest Ava is seemingly attacked 2 nights in a row, and discovers that one of their castaways, Moz, is not on the passenger manifest. Moz kidnaps the pregnant The Greatest Ava and Pugsley, and attempts to hang Pugsley after being chased by survivors, but he's rescued by Metalcrusher and BLUEALLTHRU. Two weeks later, RobR finds The Greatest Ava stumbling through the jungle, completely distraught with amnesia. This starts many confrontations between the survivors and the Wonders, which, in turn, leads to the death of one other survivor and Moz himself, whom Pugsley kills for revenge.

There are fleeting confrontations with polar bears, ClarkeM and damicky. Violence is sporadic, but the survivors' close-knit society is held together due to the de facto leader Metalcrusher, the level-headed BLUEALLTHRU, CursingFijian and Noidenous, along with distant hunter RobR, who appears to have some supporters among the survivors despite disagreements with Metalcrusher, such as the young couple Pugsley and The Greatest Ava, and Kilroy. However, RobR begins to converse with The Jesus and teaches him to throw knives, angering his protective father Jabba73. MITS eventually reveals she speaks English, causing a momentary lapse of trust in her husband, iDon.

After two weeks, RobR and Kilroy discover a mysterious hatch on the ground with no handle, and RobR become obsessed about what may be inside. Under the guise of unsuccessful croweater 41 hunting, they spend many days covertly pondering and excavating it. While exploring the island, RobR and Kilroy also discover a Beechcraft lodged on the side of a cliff. Kilroy climbs up the cliff into the plane. Inside, he finds a radio and sends a distress call. A male voice answers, "Is someone out there?" to which Kilroy responds, "We are the survivors of Babylon Flight 815." The voice replies, "We're the survivors of 815." The Beechcraft then falls from the cliff and badly injures Kilroy. RobR takes Kilroy back to the camp, but Metalcrusher is unable to save his life. At the same time, The Greatest Ava goes into labor and BLUEALLTHRU delivers the baby.

Jabba73 decides to build a raft to escape with his son The Jesus, and they are joined by Tony Lynn 15 and iDon. In the first night after launching, they are surprised and initially delighted to encounter another boat, but it turns out to carry a group of the Wonders who demand that The Jesus be handed over to them. In the ensuing chaos, the raft is destroyed, Tony Lynn 15 is shot, and The Jesus is kidnapped.

damicky leads a party of survivors to the Black Rock, a wooden ship in the middle of the island, containing a cache of dynamite which can be used to open the hatch. Along the way, one of them is chased by ClarkeM, manifested as a black cloud, which damicky calls the island's "security system." Metalcrusher and RobR bring the dynamite back to the hatch, and use it to force open the hatch door to look inside. The story ends with them looking down into the darkness of the shaft below.

I have no real idea what is happening around the league right now, but go Wonders!
The fact that your not suspended means you're in the minority in this match thread.

So Wonders, what are your plans to keep you busy this week?

1. Heaping buckets of praise on Tonga Bob for the terrific OP in this and the other match threads. Well worth reading them all.

2. Taking Pugsley for a walk every day. I will tie him to my chariot and he can trot behind. When his paws get weary he can ride the rest of the way in the chariot.

3. Having a fun debate with RobR about how their recruitment manager SOS (silly old sausage aka BLUEALLTHRU ) totally screwed the Bombers by selecting duds in the draft.

4. Might cook up some treats for the Sunday wake for TL and Softflopper. This will include NaturalDisaster brand fishy paste smeared on cretins croutons.
