We have only had four coaches in our history who have lasted longer than four years. Which explains much of our lack of success.

It's a bit chicken & egg though; the reason the others didn't last more than 4 seasons were due to lack of success...

If the most successful coach in our history with the best squad in our history took six years to achieve a premiership, then lesser coaches or lesser squads may take even longer. Patience is required. We've never shown enough. We get itchy and impulsive after two years - we need to look at this in a much longer term if we are going to have an extended era of success like Geelong (who we are trying to emulate) has just experienced.

We need stability. We need to commit to a coach and have an era of success.

You are making the assumption that one will always result in the other. Committing to a coach, when two or three years down the line you see few encouraging signs and no real tangible evidence of progress towards a 4-5 year plan, is reason to think you made a mistake and need to bring in someone else.

Pokies might not be the way to go but we need to do something. Our biggest asset is the fan base. We need to reinvest in that fan base by involving the kids. Especially kids in the south east of Melbourne, but also in every city and almost every footy comp - there is a team called the Saints - they may not be affiliated but they wear our colours and they sing our song and they cheer for the real Saints. The club needs to capitalise on this enormous grass roots base. Give them free shit, visit clubs in the off season, have photos with the principle people in these clubs - attend trophy day - that sort of thing

That is a different topic, but an opinion I completely agree with. The Saints off-field marketing and outreach stuff in the past has not been great; it does not surprise me that they have money issues, as they often tend to be behind other clubs in revising methods used for PR, memberships etc.
It was mentioned a couple of times that their player sponsors page on the website wasn't ever updated once the season started so remained inaccurate. Their membership packages and advertising of it is actually better this year (although the 'My StKilda' is a strange campaign) but in the past was not up to the same standard as Hawthorn for example. I mentioned on another thread how I'd bought a Hawks jumper as a present for a friend, and ever since each year Hawthorn send me a glossy booklet with membership and merch info and a personalised postcard pointing out I can still be a member from the other side of the world as they have a 'no-games' international membership, not just an out-of-state/Vic option. They also email me big news or new releases on their webshop. They are pretty impressive. Saints are actually almost on a par this year, but weren't for the last 4-5. They also don't have great membership options for those unable to make it to games. They should be doing as you mention, and engaging with as much and whatever support they can. Use the Texas/Colorado links they have built. Try and work on publicising Holmes' spot on the list with US sports media. They are already working the NZ market (although I worry their expectations are too high there). Even try Southampton FC as many fans will loosely support clubs cross-sports based on similar nicknames, uniforms etc. I am on the other side of the world and never get to games, but between membership and profit on merch sales the club still gets $2-300 out of me per year. Even finding 100 more people like me is worth the effort.

If you wanted to ask Bruce an open question the media would have asked Bruce, so Bruce who would you like to have as a coach.? But they don't

That started to occur in the mid-90s as media exposure soared. In the past it was open questions. Then the clubs didn't want players answering them. So players told not to answer them, journalists told not to ask them. About 10 years ago at press conferences, even the weekly one for my local sports club, there was a small briefing beforehand and the club rep would explain if there were certain questions that wouldn't be responded to. When they were rumoured to have sold a player against his will, and be trying to buy a couple others they even made a point of asking the journalists in advance what questions they were going to ask! My assumption was that if they didn't like someone's question, they wouldn't be invited to ask it once the coach and GM were up on the mike.

I hope who ever is picked as coach will not let us lose so many A graders.

BJ, Dal, Big Boy and he retired Milne also Gram should be suiting up in 2014 in Saints Colors.

If that was the case we would be in 8 still.

We have been forced into a rebuild by Waters not Lyon, we could have keeped them all and still drafted kids with talent over last 2 years and would be still around Geelong mark.

Get it right saints before we lose the few A graders we have left!

Longer taps Savage Goal. Centimetre perfect by the Saints from the boundary 50m out!

McEvoy and Gram are not A graders, Dal and BJ were amicable breaks that suited club and player alike and Milne retired and may very well go to jail, not to mention Grammy is a stalker.

Milne you still be better on our list next year over a Milera / Saad, right McEvoy prob a B and Gram a B-. But we would have been better with them than without, Waters brought in dead wood Maister, Milera and Saad was about as handy for us this season as he will be next.

Milne RETIRED that has nothing to do with Watters, he isn't an option. McEvoy seemed like a bad trade but we wound up with another 1st round pick and we got Longer later anyway. Gram has serious off field issues and probably wouldn't be getting a game anyway in a rebuilding side. Maister isn't a world beater but is a decent stop gap and Saad is good, if he stays away from energy drinks he will continue to be good.

We are in a rebuild, we threw the kitchen sink at winning flags and it has cost us long term, if we had one won (or two) no one would care where we were now but were not Geelong or Hawthorn, all decisions need to be made for longer term success from here out.

Frankly i think the saints view on free agency and the way we handled Goddard and Dal was forward thinking and i, for one, applaud it. The players get a good deal and we get a good deal.
