Over the past few seasons an issue that has become increasingly discussed in the Sweet FA is the number of people posting in match threads where they don't belong. Gatecrashers. The reasons these intrusions occur may vary: some get tagged in and are merely answering a question. Others pop into the occasional thread to stir up a mate with a witty one-liner. Then there are those that are systematically forcing their will upon others, clogging up match threads with rubbish that detracts from the match at hand.​

There are a handful of people that come to mind as the most frequent infringers of this activity, and so as we like to do at Serial Stats...we crunched some numbers. Just like the past two seasons, whilst accumulating match thread data for the S32 List Assessment & Posting Stats I also kept track of which posters were in threads where they didn't belong. The numbers were startling.​

One thing I had to take into account though was the sim posters. They seemed over-represented in the numbers, and with good reason: they put time aside during their busy Sunday schedules to post other teams' sims. So I identified which sim posters were allocation to each thread, and then disregarded any of their posts from the day the sim was posted. If they accidently posted it a day early (*ahem* Wosh) they gatecrashed. If they popped in on the Wednesday for an amusing anecdote (*ahem* philreich) they gatecrashed.​

So let's go have a look at some numbers:​

​

There have been 105,882 legitimate match thread posts across the duration of this season. In that time there has been 5,559 posts from Gatecrashers. That's just under 5.0% of all posts. Is that too much? Maybe.​

​

150 listed posters have appeared in match threads that they do not belong. That's nearly half the league of 310 players, and well over half of the 273 players than posted at least once in a match thread this season!​

​

The least amount of Gatecrashers in a match thread this season is four. This occurred in the Round 14 match between the East Side Phoenix and Sin City Swamprats with a total of 35 invasive posts (19 of them from Pickitt). The match thread with the least amount of invasive posts was the Round 5 match thread between the Las Vegas Bears and Gumbies FFC, with six Gatecrashers creating only nine invasive posts.​

The flip side of the coin occurred during the Round 2 match thread between the Baghdad Bombers and Fighting Furies, when thirty-one posters who were not Bombers or Furies decided they needed to post in there, combining for a total of 258 posts.​

Incredibly that wasn't the most amount of invasive posts in a match thread this season. That occurred during the Baghdad Bombers and Fighting Furies rematch in their Round 13 match thread, when twenty-three Gatecrashers combined for an insane 451 posts!​

​

Several non-listed players were included in this data set. 32 of them to be exact, You may be familiar with such names as Shaz from Karratha, BoomerAndy and Not TJASTA - but there were also some former players, such as AceAndy, WaynesWorld19 and ArdentEagle.​

As covered in my Stayer Awards thread, there are some heroes out there - those that resisted the urge to post in match threads that they did not belong. The best of whom was eth-dog, who posted 844 times without a transgression.​

But how are we going with our mission to stamp out this awful activity? In Season 30 there were 7,475 invasive posts, which was 6.46% of all match thread posts. In Season 31 there were 5,583 invasive posts, which was 5.77% of all match thread posts. With that number now below 5.00% WE ARE WINNING THE BATTLE, folks!​

Now, for the individuals. I have two numbers compiled for each Gatecrasher: the number of match threads they've crashed, and the number of total posts in match threads where they don't belong. I've then used a Secret Serial formula to apply a weighting for the impact that Gatecrasher is having on the league this season. Over the course of the next couple of days I will count down the culprits, starting from #20.​
