Rumour Shane Mumford - Video "snorting powder"

Certainly not a one off incident as he looked like a pro. It's blatantly obvious GWS have a cultural problem with drugs.
Doesn't seem so. Whitfield apparently snorted coke on his christmas break with hometown freinds. This incident with Mummy appears to be also not with other players.

We have to await the investigation but at this stage there's no indication the club has a cultural problem, whether you'd like there to be or not.

Every club has a few players doing coke and mdma

It’s easy to not get caught

We expect these guys to be model citizens 24 hours a day

We bash them on forums when they play a bad game

We scrutinise everything they do...occasionally we say geez well done ......they are young ...with lots of cash ...can’t have a normal party life ....can’t drink beer ...

Add all that into a big pot and give it a stir ...what do you get ?

You get recreational drug use and the odd wild party ....you will get the odd dependent user like Ben

But geez the percentage of players who have a drug problem is so much lower than general society ...people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones

How's Mumford gonna explain this to his kids when they get old enough to Google his name?

Cement head.

It makes him real ....he made an error

He’s human ....kids won’t judge someone on one action nor should they .....dofefrent for a dependent user (addict isn’t a term we use) ......

Let’s think about this

Which is more dangerous to society ....Liam Ryan or Dan swans actions ....driving a car drunk
Or personal drug use at a party ....

Moral police love this stuff ....but in reality which is likely to kill someone ?

How can you make that assumption

My goodness ...I hope your life is prisntine and pure ...geez
Because one of their players (at the time) was snorting coke. Is it a problem for the club? Yes.
Even if it was just mummy and he has never done it with any other Giants player.
If it's a non issue and it doesn't matter then I stand corrected

That's silly.
To take that to it's logical absurdity the club would have to enslave it's players and control them 24/7. I have this vague feeling AFLPA might have an issue with that.

I'm not saying they should. That would be crazy obviously.
But if a player is at a club and doing drugs is that not a cultural issue at the club?
I'm not saying its just the Giants. You could nearly assume every club has cultural issues, unless drug taking and or alcohol abuse aren't cultural issues.

Maybe we need to have realistic eduction

I deliver realistic education .....I got to high school students

I start by saying saying if your in the 85% of kids who will experiment with drugs how will keep yourself safe and get home ....many kids won’t call their parents to come get them when things get outa hand because they are worried their parents will go physcho st them and shame them

They die.....people die because the stigma attached to drug and alcohol use.....

In terms of Afl...and this will never happen but we need to be realistic ....this will happen ...stop saying no don’t do it .....this actually makes them go ...man this shit must be good if they keep telling me not to do it ...

The more you say no to someone them. Ore likely they look at you and go why ......screw you let me find out for myself ..human nature
There's your problem. Again, Darwin comes to mind. If people do drugs because someone told them it's bad they'll also do other things because someone's told them it's bad. Let Darwin take care of them.

This cannot be good for us in any way. There isn't any real indication of a culture permitting or encouraging drug use though. The club will have to think through the next step carefully. If the investigation should reveal a deeper problem then swift decisive action is absolutely needed.

My view on what is public is he can't continue as a ruck coach in a formal position of authority over young players. I'm not necessarily opposed to drafting him but he has to stay out of the leadership group.

He's entitled to have the matter dealt with expeditiously and be allowed to move in, albeit with whatever consequences are decided appropriate . He remains a stalwart of the club and has had a significant positive influence in our short history.

We're also a new club marketing ourselves to our zone as family friendly, prioritising growth largely through junior development, and perceptions matter. The club is bigger than any player.

It'll be a tough call on how to proceed.

We already have realistic education. Everyone knows it's bad. What we really need is a change in attitude to drug use. It's NOT cool to use them.

Telling people that almost everyone uses them, so it's normal, gives kids a green light.

Make it legal and then it's not naughty.

Tell people they are emotionally weak if they can't have a good time without drugs.

Agree to disagree ....feeling kids not to do something increases their curiosity

They’ll do it anyways Regardless of the message

The message needs to be do it safely...people don’t understand harm minimisation
