Rumour Shane Mumford - Video "snorting powder"

Been told a very young player from a Melbourne based club flew home early from an o/s trip because his team mates were doing drugs.
Good on him for not following the other dickheads.
To help me narrow down who it might have been, did he fly home out of disgust for the drugs, or did he fly home because he had a sudden eureka moment of "OMG I know some **** back home that would go perfectly with some of that stuff!" ?

The sad reality of that now is that young player could be ostracised by some of the playing group or at the very least those overseas bagging the crap out of him .This is no different to the real world, such a shame

You dont get the anti-dobbing side if human nature?

You put a group of guys together tell them to connect, bleed for each other. Then it surprises you they dont dump on their former teamates when they retire?

Players could say:

"Yes, I have seen it on a few occasions, and I have heard a few stories. I won't say which club or who the players were. It is a small minority of players, in my experience. It would be a lower percentage than you would find in the general public. I would be surprised if it was happening during the actual season".

or:

"I would prefer not to talk about what i have seen, but i think it is not a problem".

But they all just say: "Never saw it", when members of the public who party with footballers have seen it.

Has nothing to do with being disloyal or dobbing someone in. I am not sure what you mean by dumping on teammates.

Surely there would be one adult in a club responsible enough to show some balls and say, “This isn’t right.” Professionally (as a teacher) I’d be deregistered by the Teacher’s Registration Board if I knew there was supply of illicit drugs at the club I’m involved with and did jack shit about it. I don’t see it as a moral dilemma (e.g “dobbing”) Ethically, I’d have no problem informing the controlling body of the culprits.

They wouldn't be doing it in front of the whole club so it is not a matter of finding one responsible adult, they would know to avoid people with your views and do it in private, the jnr players are normally the players that are playing snr footy and have built a bond with snr players. It is not every snr player and every jnr player with the consent of the club. It is similar but not as bad at cricket clubs, not saying it is right but agree it is rife.

I’d know. There are give away signs of illicit drug use. As a health educator, I’m trained to detect them. I’ve reported players to the state league body before and wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. Yes, it’s hardline. No, I don’t apologise for it. The players know my attitude towards it. To their credit, they respect it.

The hardline on drugs or war on drugs is a complete failure ...it doesn’t work

With all due respect to you. This hardline ....war ...dob people in approach has failed in society and sport too....we need earlier interventions and an approach that assists young people making better choices

Just saying “Don’t do it” doesn’t wash

We also need to research better the pressure environment we’ve created for players ....again just saying oh well they are paid shit loads doesn’t wash.

I can spot a user too ...however I take a different approach ...holestic one. Lots of people do drugs

Lots of people drink way too much. The person who took the video is dead set idiot.

Why are they sending Mumford to “rehabilitation” .....this was three years ago .....he might not even be using now ....we have to put drug use in the same category as binge drinking which frankly causes more deaths than party drugs like cocaine and MDMA ....EVEN METH doesn’t kill that many compared to alcohol

I hope Mumford has good people around him .....the public shaming aspect is something I despise about modern society. It doesn’t assist.

The drug education being provided by the AFL IS average ...it again simply says DON’T

The word don’t doesn’t work.

But why after 3 years?

Surely if it was circulated like you mentioned, it would have surfaced earlier. I'm guessing someone that doesn't like him released this.. maybe a woman that he screwed over, or even a friend he had a falling out with.

In other words, due to the timeframe.. I don't think it was circulated outside of very few, maybe even one singular person. Maybe even a parnter or friend of that person released it, after going through his phone.
Honestly I have my doubts about it being three years ago. He looks fairly slim and from memory he was pretty beefy back in 2015.

But if it was maybe someone decided plenty of time had gone by and decided to forward it on to more people.

Maybe a phone got hacked or a friend fell out with Mumford, who knows.

Videos don’t just go viral ....somone sent it recently is my view

I’m disappointed with the salacious media outlets ...they actually love it ...sells papers

He's willingly taking the drug ffs. Why should we assist him if he won't even assist himself by not using in the first place? Education? You reckon he knows he shouldn't be doing it? Darwin's Law comes to mind.

Not using us unrealistic in today’s world

We have to change the way we think

Drug use is a normal activity for many now .sorry that’s so stark but it is

It better have been shot three years ago. Unforgivable for someone to be using a camera phone in 2018 with that resolution.

To the first part of your question though; yes, I am saying that every club has “juniors” doing drugs with more senior players.

Making a life choice to do illicit drugs is one thing.

Seniors getting involved with juniors doing it is pretty ****ed up.

Source, proof?

In 2016 it was reported that 3.1 million Australian’s had used illicit drugs.
Doesn’t take a maths genius that once you rule out the elderly and young kids that it’s a pretty fair whack of the population who use. Logically speaking you’re going to have 18 year olds and 30 year olds using, and some of those guys are going to be at the same sporting club. Pretty easy thing to bond over so why wouldn’t they hang out together?

The hardline on drugs or war on drugs is a complete failure ...it doesn’t work

Hardline? We haven’t seen hardline yet. Not even close.

Automatic testing at all club urinals / tearing up the contract of anyone who gets busted / shutting down of the competition until it gets fixed ... that’s when things get hardline.

Why would they? Why should we care?

For one, it doesn’t matter how big a party girl they were back in the day, mums (and Dads) don’t want their sons (or daughters) doing that stuff. And if Mums start getting into the ear of their 12 year old sons that if they really want to play AFL then they’ll have to find their own way of getting to training and to games ... then that’s really bad for the competition.

With all due respect to you. This hardline ....war ...dob people in approach has failed in society and sport too....

Wait, what??? What is this “dob in approach?” How often does that really happen?

we need earlier interventions and an approach that assists young people making better choices

Sure. But that’s not mutually exclusive?

Just saying “Don’t do it” doesn’t wash

What about “Don’t do it or you’re risking a 2 / 4 year ban from sporting competition by ASADA if your coke is cut with the wrong stuff - and WTF, how would you ever know that it isn’t.” (Josh Thomas / Lachlan Keeffe) or “Don’t do it or you’re risking a 2 / 4 year ban from sporting competition by ASADA if it gets found in your system on gameday”? (As Sam Murray is alleged to have done)

We also need to research better the pressure environment we’ve created for players ...

Sure (if we’re not doing that already) but again that’s not mutually exclusive.

again just saying oh well they are paid shit loads doesn’t wash.

You said yourself that we need to help young people make better choices. How about we get their role models to make better choices? And if folks who get paid $$$ to kick a pigskin around a paddock don’t want to be a role model, then that’s totally cool, they go and have another profession instead where they don’t carry that responsibility.

Lots of people drink way too much.

Sure, that’s not a good thing either.

The person who took the video is dead set idiot.

Surely the person on the other side of the camera is a bigger idiot?

If it wasn’t for videos like this, wouldn’t we all be ‘head in the sand’ denying that this goes on. And now that we see that this stuff goes on, and maybe more of it goes on, doesn’t that motivate people to actually do something about it? Motivate people to do some of the things you are suggesting? Isn’t that a good thing?

Why are they sending Mumford to “rehabilitation” .....this was three years ago .....he might not even be using now ....we have to put drug use in the same category as binge drinking which frankly causes more deaths than party drugs like cocaine and MDMA ....EVEN METH doesn’t kill that many compared to alcohol

Cars kill a lot of people too. Poor diet kills a lot of people too ... but in this case an ex footy player didn’t get filmed drinking or eating junk food or driving a car. He got filmed doing ... whether you agree with the law or the morals or not ... an illegal and immoral activity.

I hope Mumford has good people around him .....the public shaming aspect is something I despise about modern society. It doesn’t assist.

Can you think of a better way of raising awareness? Raising awareness is a good thing, yes?

Sure, it’s embarrassing for Mumford ... but he put himself in that position? Maybe this turns out to be a positive thing for him - if he needs one of those interventions you spoke about (we don’t know) then this will help him get it?

The drug education being provided by the AFL IS average ...it again simply says DON’T

Maybe its incidents like this that create the impetus to fix it?

In 2016 it was reported that 3.1 million Australian’s had used illicit drugs.

Is that like those reports that say a few million Victorians went to the footy in 2018 when what they really mean is that a few hundred thousand went to a dozen games?

IIRC (happy to be wrong), they determine this kind of thing by measuring concentration of illicit drugs in the sewage system and then extrapolate that across the population. So whilst they get a reasonable sense of how much illicit drug consumption there is across society, they really have NFI how many individuals are actually consuming. Is it 3.1 million who do it once a year? Or Hundreds of thousands who do it dozens of times a year? I suspect it’s closer to the latter.
