Should Cotchin and Ellis get off because it is grand final next week?

Shiel had the ball in his hands. He was first to the ball. First to the contest. Cotchin could have dived in with his hands or applied a tackle as soon as Shiel grabbed the ball. He took the third option which was to fly in with his shoulder. Shiel hit in the mouth/chin. Concussion test failed. Out of the game for 3 quarters. These are the facts.
Those are not the facts. The fact is first to the ball, at that pace it looked like evens , to me. No player at fault, that is the fact.

Its not a fact that the Cotchin hit caused the concussion. He played on fine after that hit. If he wasnt smashed by Astbury just before the qtime siren i doubt he would have even done a concussion test.

His bump was fair and square, and to all on here who think that was a suspendable action, you need to find another sport to follow.
It was a legal collision that either could have been hurt, so I suspect he'll be fine. His intention was the ball. If you could not see that, you should, again, find another sport you understand, to follow.
So just to confirm all players bending down to pick up the ball are now fair game to be deliberately hip and shouldered. The exact thing the AFL have been trying to stamp out over the last few years??

Ellis I don't know about, Sloane and Cotchin absolutely no suspension , if the AFL do they'll be in court the following day. That hit was not deliberate to hurt , it was a contest for the ball, sometimes people out there in BF land seem to forget that contact collision and bending to get the ball are all part and parcel of this game.
Then again folks we could ban any touching at all, and turn it into tiddly winks???????????????????

This is how stupid this MRP thing has been allowed to get. What ?12 to 14 stone blokes going hell bent for leather and hit like cars crashing, and no one expects to get hurt, on occasion?
Will we begin reporting players who take screamers in the air , and then break a blokes head open who happens to be under him.
Are we going to come to that?

Sling tackles are terrible that is the only thing in this game that an attacking player can control, and the extra throw down sling is a deadly, possible neck breaking, thing, that should be shot down and kicked clean out of the game.

But the Cotchin and Sloane things are in the heat of the battle and so fast that blame and suspension can never ever be proven .Both were part of play.
I must have been out of the room for the Ellis thing, I can't remember, maybe someone can word me up on it. Was it when he ran off the ground?

I don't see how you can argue that players should be suspended for forceful tackles where a player's head hits the ground yet not suspend someone for choosing to bump like Cotchin and hitting a player in the head, choosing to bump is surely worse than a forceful or reckless tackle.

Even if that was the case (it wasn't, Shiel had the ball in hand) he still chose to bump and got him in the head. Careless, high, medium or high. He's gone.

Yeah shit I dunno. I just watched it properly them. Shiel was first to the ball, had taken possession of the ball (albeit momentarily, but was definitely there before Cotchin) and then received a bump that caught him on the chin.

Clearly not intentional, but reckless/careless yes. It's the sort of stuff the AFL have been clearly trying to get rid of, and I've been worried all along about them having to apply the rule consistently when it came to a big final.

The issue for Cotchin is is that his shoulder hit Shiel in the head which is clear. This will depend on what the AFL do as if he gets a fine it's suspension time and he misses the GF.

Going to be a big week waiting the outcome.

Except he isn't. He's going for the man. Who funnily enough is going for the ball, as he has it.

To be fair, he is not going for the man in a Shane Mumford kind of way. He is "going for the ball while protecting himself".

Unfortunately, that approach was fine five to ten years ago, but I'm not so sure now. Time and again the players are told about their duty of care to their opponents, especially when second to the contest.

So that means it's ok for a player to go full force into his jaw with his shoulder? Duty of care. He's gone.

At what point does the AFL have to sit down and decide that the players have their own duty of care to protect themselves.

The Ellis incident is vastly different because Ellis goes the man directly. How can a player be suspended diving for the ball? It is unfortunate that he clipped Shiel's jaw, but there is no way it warrants anything let alone 2 weeks.

There was nothing in the Astbury hit. Didn't even hit him in the head. Shiel's head didn't even hit the ground after. The Astbury defence is a desperate move by Richmond fans which should be left to the Facebook comments section. Years ago, Brent Montgomery was KOd in a final by Brodie Holland from memory. Brent went on to kick a bag. He is on record as saying he has no memory of the game after the hit. Concussion can occur well after the trauma. People respond in different ways. I'm also perplexed that you're happy to throw Astbury under the bus.

Conspiracy theory ... Tigers rolled over on the clash jumper quickly, so the AFL go easy on Cotchin and Ellis at the MRP?

Prepare to be surprised then. He chose to play the man. He hit him high. He's gone.

I think it will be disgraceful if Cotchin gets suspended.

He was clearly going hard for the ball, and Shiel who was in no mans land, not going hard for the ball nor protecting himself was unfortunately clipped.

If Cotchin gets suspended then Rory Sloane should aswell.

Brandon Ellis has a far greater chance from my view.

Agree completely

OH NO! Grammar errors invalidate my point.

Said no-one ever. You are 37 it's time to grow up.

My point stands...If you're going to look to put others down, try not leaving yourself wide open with stupid grammar errors. Makes you look like a fool.

And not sure what the reference to 37 is. You now have a counting issue??

He should get fined and then he only has himself to blame because it is his third strike.
Once again I ask, why should he get fined or reported or anything for playing football, he played in a final it was desperate, is this what you want to see taken away from the game.
Do you want basketball "fouls" typed rules?
Thats what it sounds like, this game is going to the pack if any of those people get suspended.

And the fans instead of arguing back and forth about guilt or non guilt, maybe should be demanding the goddamned AFL come back to some kind of reality of football, instead showing all this hatred and bias against players who are out there playing the tough sport that you so called football supporters want to see. But no you don't you who think its fair to make judgement on blokes who play fair but hard, then you should get off Big Footy and go play a round of tennis, not golf either you might get hit with a ball.
Every year some bull s**t like this comes up, I was at the MCG many years ago when Neville Crowe threw out a swinging hand at John Nichols , which never touched him the mongrel went down like he'd been hit with a rock, he hadn't.
And I know , I was with my older cousin who'd taken me to the game, we were in the goal square area , it happened about 20 feet from me I saw it perfectly ,( it was shown on TV the other night too)
2 weeks for that non punch. It broke Crowe's heart. Now we crucify great football with slow motion bulldust that creates a false sense of what actually happened. IT IS WRONG. As was Crowe's suspension, perhaps they suspended him for the attempt, what crud.
I don't know about all you politically correct snobs of football rules, BUT IF ANYONE GETS SUSPENDED IT'LL BE A DARK DAY ON A SPORT THAT IS GETTING DARKER, AND OVER ADJUDICATED,
TO THE POINT OF IT NOT BEING WORTH WATCHING!

Astbury obviously wont be suspended, neither will Cotchin. Ellis might be, but they will probably just fine him because its a GF. Now obviously you are clear that Cotchin should be suspended, but what do you actually believe will happen? Because I dont think there is any chance at all that Cotch will miss next week.

I
Watch it properly. He clearly does not have possession of the ball at any stage and they pretty much get there the same time.

Shiel clearly has the ball. Cotchin chooses to bump. Got him in the head and player is concussed. Move on he's gone. Don't agree with it but you can't have one set of rules for the regular season and one because it ruins his chance to play in a grand final
