it's looking highly likely that essendon will be getting a top 2-3 draft pick this year.

i know it wont happen but IMO the AFL should rule essendon out of getting a first round pick this year. in reality they will be getting a substantial side benefit from the suspension of their 12 players. they will probably get all of heppell, watson, hooker, hurley, hibberd, bellchambers, colyer back. with those players coming back and an elite junior talent they are a definite top 8 chance in 2017.

it is bullshit to me that they will be rewarded by getting an elite talent on top of their suspended players coming back. they should come into the draft at the end of the first round IMO.

thoughts?

Essendon aside, the draft was to help crap lists.

Almost everyone agrees their list next year looks quite good, so it is a quirk that a penalty has had the effect of corrupting the fundamental principle of the draft.

The AFL probably should have removed their 2016 first round draft pick privileges.

Essentially the penalty of banned players has rewarded them with a top 3 pick. Probably top 2.

Not surprised they didn't though. Essendon are a big club, they won't want them down for too long.

Fremantle's injured players are coming back, let's rule them ineligible. Or doesn't that suit your anti-Essendon agenda?
slightly different? injured players coming back >>>> systematic illegal supplements regime resulting in suspended players coming back.

The #1 pick is overrated. It's very difficult to judge players at 18 years old. Even though recruiters have gotten better, I'd say top 3 are pretty much equal and any pick in the top 10 and you're expecting a very high quality player.

The AFL have already penalised them with draft picks and we'll probably see the effect of that in a few years anyway.

The AFL are way too protective of their own interests to do anything further. Although I agree with outcome, I think the club have now been punished and we need to move on. No need for further sanctions. Having said that I thought Gillon's reaction to the WADA decision was disgraceful and unethical, as has been their handling of Watson's brownlow.

Eh probably, like we did when we beat the Bulldogs in Round 23 last year.
Draft aside, that was an entertaining game of footy. Early blowout from the dogs, good comeback from the lions to send their fans off with a win.

Probably didn't matter as they were always going to get Schache, but it showed they weren't going to tank it up.

It's not really all that fair. They weren't a realistic chance of winning the premiership this year so essentially they have a full season of development for their younger players, 12 months off to freshen up for their older players and on top of that a top draft pick. This year is also a free-hit in terms of game-plan development etc because their is no expectation on them as a club whatsoever.

Yeah, if only we played with a third of that spirit we showed this season...

The logical call was to strip them of the first round pick. They're a lock for the spoon so it would just mean they enter the draft at pick 18. Like mentioned above the draft is designed to help teams who need more talent, Essendon already have another ~10 players to come back into their team. Essendon apologists will point to other teams having injuries, but it's not really the same situation. Teams with injuries didn't cheat. Comparing it to tanking would be closer.

Knowing the AFL, they'll probably give them a priority pick though on top of their number 1 pick. Doesn't really matter too much though, their list is terrible and they were bottom 4 last year anyway. They aren't playing finals for a long time, let alone 2017.

Ah, so getting players back is irrelevant, this is just a trolling "da drugz" post. Great thread, you're good at this :thumbsu:
