Should Essendon be eligible for a first round draft pick?

The logical call was to strip them of the first round pick. They're a lock for the spoon so it would just mean they enter the draft at pick 18. Like mentioned above the draft is designed to help teams who need more talent, Essendon already have another ~10 players to come back into their team. Essendon apologists will point to other teams having injuries, but it's not really the same situation. Teams with injuries didn't cheat. Comparing it to tanking would be closer.

Knowing the AFL, they'll probably give them a priority pick though on top of their number 1 pick. Doesn't really matter too much though, their list is terrible and they were bottom 4 last year anyway. They aren't playing finals for a long time, let alone 2017.

Almost everyone agrees their list next year looks quite good, so it is a quirk that a penalty has had the effect of corrupting the fundamental principle of the draft.

No they don't. There's constant claims on here that the list is shit and going nowhere and that players won't come back well after a year off, unless of course this subject comes up.

it's looking highly likely that essendon will be getting a top 2-3 draft pick this year.

i know it wont happen but IMO the AFL should rule essendon out of getting a first round pick this year. in reality they will be getting a substantial side benefit from the suspension of their 12 players. they will probably get all of heppell, watson, hooker, hurley, hibberd, bellchambers, colyer back. with those players coming back and an elite junior talent they are a definite top 8 chance in 2017.

it is bullshit to me that they will be rewarded by getting an elite talent on top of their suspended players coming back. they should come into the draft at the end of the first round IMO.

We all have a tendency to say our team "took it easy" when really they went missing. The game felt like the beginning of Essendon's fortunes turning around, that's why the media and Essendon supporters got excited. Pretty simple. If it were reversed I'm sure you'd be pretty proud of your group.

Considering the doomsday, scorched earth scenario came to fruition, Essendon have come out of it as well as they have. I think considering bar Hurley they've somehow managed to sign on everyone of importance, I'd like their pick to be pushed back, to say, pick 10 and that goes with all their other draft picks. Also remembering, they traded out banned players last year who were expected to play this year that got them pick 5 and 25.

Also we all know the AFL makes the rules up as they go along so this option isn't out of the realms.

Annihilated me? I don't play for Essendon. Keep living vicariously through your team, compare their performance to Essendon's and that makes you better than I am.

If North went the bludge, they aren't a premiership contender then in my eyes. Premiership sides don't take the foot off. So take it how you want it.

No you didn't. You had a decent 10 scoring shots in the second half and managed to kick 8 behinds (or did you miss all those shots on purpose?). Given North's pathetic % when compared to the other top teams I would've thought you would've been looking for a percentage booster at half time.

Kicking 2 goals in a half and nearly losing a game to us was a pretty putrid effort. That sort of loser mentality will make it hard to get over teams who know how to regularly play 4 quarters when the whips are cracking.
