Should Essendon be eligible for a first round draft pick?

No they shouldn't get it but yeah they will.

No club should be rewarded based on their finishing position due to club liable suspensions on their playing list.

But but strict liability and all that.

The logical call was to strip them of the first round pick. They're a lock for the spoon so it would just mean they enter the draft at pick 18. Like mentioned above the draft is designed to help teams who need more talent, Essendon already have another ~10 players to come back into their team. Essendon apologists will point to other teams having injuries, but it's not really the same situation. Teams with injuries didn't cheat. Comparing it to tanking would be closer.

Knowing the AFL, they'll probably give them a priority pick though on top of their number 1 pick. Doesn't really matter too much though, their list is terrible and they were bottom 4 last year anyway. They aren't playing finals for a long time, let alone 2017.

So basically you're saying in a normal season with no suspensions we'd be in line for picks 1-4. So, can you explain again the rationale why we should be stripped of our first round pick?

And you may recall we have already had our first and second picks stripped in the 2013 and 2014 National drafts due to the ASAGA (amongst other things).

If the club and players had done their due diligence in the first place and had in place suitable governance...

And I've never seen so many people so upset that a group of fans aren't losing their shit as much as they would like or thought they would.

Get over yourselves and just worry about supporting your own team.

POTY.

The ladder order isn't the appropriate list quality measurement this year because there is an artificial 1 year list quality impact from the large scale suspensions of Essendon players.

How's that any different to a club's list being impacted by an inordinately large number of injuries?

It's artificial, immediately reversible and doesn't require subjective judgement. Not to mention self inflicted.

Let's be honest, if the AFL had've held their gun powder on their punishments then they could've dealt out everything at the same time WADA delivered their sanctions. That would've given the club 12 months without 12 players on top of the draft sanctions, fine and being booted from the finals, all of which would've been handed down essentially at the same time.

Essendon can't be blamed for the AFL blowing their load early.

but we're evil and must be punished in perpetuity

The club was found guilty of doping. They still haven't been punished for that. I have no issue with the bombers getting the first pick next year, just not this year.

If Brisbane continue to struggle for the rest of the season, it wouldn't surprise me if the AFL awarded them a priority pick ahead of the Bombers.

It would be the one time the AFL probably wouldn't face a backlash for a PP if it meant denying Essendon and/or Freo (if people assume they're tanking)

No, the players were found guilty of doping. And their punishment is being suspended for 12 months.

We already received our team punishment for governance failures 2 years ago.

They aren't? How much punishment is enough for you Jason?
this would be it.

i can not see how it is fair that the bombers get a possible top 1-3 draft pick when they have elite players coming back next year and if the supplements saga had never happened they would have these players now and they would almost certainly be further up the ladder.

as i said in my OP, this is no chance of happening IMO so just a discussion point. i am certainly not an anti essendon zealot, my posts in the ASADA/essendon threads on the main board would confirm this.
