Screw that.
Sack the talent scounts and just follow Cal Twomey's mock drafts. He has inside word with club scouts, we'd effectively be getting 17 other clubs doing our scouting for us.

We can then allocate those funds towards better assistant coaches.
FOS at 3, Lindsay at 13 and Oliver at 23 would be perfectly fine with me as per Cal’s rankings

Even though they won't do it, the AFL should bring in a pick for less than 4 wins. Teams are spending too long down the bottom of the ladder. The teams that have moved up the ladder in recent years (freo, Carlton, Port, crows) don't have the top end talent to compete with academies or F/S selections.

A better way to do it is to give non finalists a second round of picks before the finalists get their 1st pick.

Not sure about impacting finalist first round but I like where you’re thinking. Could maybe do something like below, where the bottom 10 double up on 2nd rounders but have no 3rd rounders and top 8 have double 3rds no 2nds.

1st: bottom 10 -> top 8
2nd: bottom 10 -> bottom 10
3rd: top 8 -> top 8
4th + : bottom 10 -> top 8

Removing compensation and all Pp at the same time.

The thing is that the system as it is set up works well - if the draft isn’t forever complex (compromised).

I know that the points system is being improved next year, but a team like Brisbane making a GF then getting a top 2/3 draft selection is not how it should be.

They need to find a way to force clubs into a decision (I.e. is it worth the cost to get high end players), also need to add a compound tax to additional academy players (I.e. 2nd match onwards needs a % more points).

I don’t disagree with the argument that northern (and other) academies are needed to grow the game - but they really need to start growing talent for all 18 clubs to access for it to be sustainable

Bottom 6 should get the -10% discount on academy players
Middle 6 should get no discount
Top 6 should get a + 10% surcharge

If they run out of points like Brisbane this year other academy players can't be matched on .

Brisbane would probably need to sell future picks or players to get both ashcroft and Marshall this year .

Well you are right that they can't compete against teams that continue getting multiple FS and academy access year after year.

No surprises which teams are in the grand final again.

It's the AFL Father Son / Academy Cup the two sides are playing for this weekend. Best team propped up by AFL concessions wins.

Turned into a fixed horse race the AFL competition.

Never understood why people were so against priority picks. The original system of two picks at the pointy end of the draft for 4.5 or less wins worked well. Sure some teams deliberately lost games, but they still do that anyway, and at least under that system, you had teams yo-yoing up and down the ladder like crazy.

These days you wind up down the bottom and you get to stay there for years - North just racked up their fifth consecutive bottom two finish. That's brown-paper-bag-sanction Carlton levels (five out of six seasons for them).

Bring back the before-first-round priority with known rules. Then it's the SAME for everyone, no shadowy "you can have some assistance, but you can't" bullshit, and as a bonus side-effect it also offsets the academy access the northern clubs get as they'll never suck enough to have access to the extra pointy picks. Game, set, match, problem solvered.

They got rid of the 4 wins or less automatic priority pick and made it discretionary cos they thought teams were tanking to get one, I can't see them bringing back a similar rule.

Fair to say on the evidence of the last few years, that club tanking as an issue is miniscule compared to AFL draft compromisation.

League headquarters is like a bunch of politicians that keep interfering to fix things that they did, again, again and again - I call it the Kaneisation of the game.

Game should be pretty simple.

Leave the draft to play its natural role, with interference only when bringing in new clubs.

Make clubs recruiting free agents pay the compo, not every other side - in what alternative reality did someone manage to come up with a system that penalises every other club in a comp for a free agent moving clubs? - oh that's right, in AFL house!!!).

Increases in off field spending caps should be the only mechanism used to improve basket cases - see Paul Roos and the Demons.

And almost forgot to say..... efffing oath to asking for PP's under the current system.

They need to definitely remove compo picks for FA as priority.
If the team losing the player is to still receive a pick, then set up rules for the receiving team to give up a certain pick based on value.
It's more logical to get rid of any sort of compo pick completely.
For academy matching, I'd prefer no matches in the first round rather than allow it from the first round for all clubs.
Teams like Sydney, Brisbane & GWS shouldn't be able to get the extra leg up.
Father son can remain as is though.
I think the goal should be to compromise the draft order as little as possible.
Without FA compo, academy matches & PP, our 2nd round pick would only have been pushed out to pick 20 instead of pick 30.

Get rid of father son all together. If a club wants a club legends son, they’ll pay fair value like any other trade of players and picks
Clubs should get first dibs on father sons but pay the price where they were bid on without any discount. I don't agree with scraping it all together.

So when do we get our priority picks?
Our poorly performing team is our fault, but North and Richmond’s poorly performing teams are not their fault.

I think this is called a double standard. Classic Vafl.

No way Richmond should be getting a pick until two years after us, and how many picks do North get, or do they just keep getting them until they rise up the ladder?
