If you are suggesting the club should try to game him with an opportunistic low offer(which would be doomed), then we can just disagree.

I’d take a top 20 pick for De Goey in a heart beat. If he gets AA this year we would be crazy to offer him market value.

He won’t be at his best when we are ready to contend. Cash in if we have the chance.

Top 20?

Honestly mate, that’s just mental.

I’m not sure I even understand your logic?

Terrible idea.

A top 20 pick might net us a Broomhead or Kyle Martin, or Scharenberg or Freeman. Right now we have a player capable of 30 touches and multiple goals a game.

They're rare as hen's teeth.

Ok. So can we agree paying De Goey $800k + for four years is a bad idea?
I would wait 6-8 weeks and if his form remains that good then $800k is about right. I’d prefer 3 years but market forces will dictate.

Mate, you’re the crown prince of soap boxes on this forum, one step down from the cloudshouter.
Clearly I need to stack my soapboxes higher. Some day I will touch the sky man.

I wouldn’t do it but I think that’s more realistic.

Based on the news scuttlebutt if he is currently on $800k, his next contract should be materially higher. Not sure his fireman manager would have the skills to go down this route but I would be looking for an increase plus an index to cap increases.

That’s a lot of money to dedicate to a player during a rebuild. Will be interesting to see which way the club goes on this.

I guess I’m really just going on what he’s probably on but factoring in the risks signing him poses and hoping he feels he owes us a little (rightly or wrongly). Yep, increases with cap and other incentives is a good idea.

Last comment from me because I respect the views of those posters who want to keep De Goey.

He’s an excellent player, no argument from me.

But.

This is the perfect chance to offload significant potential salary cap whilst gaining a first round pick.

I reckon the club will take that.

We are all speaking out of our collective beehinds but I would completely disregard any consideration of some sort of discount for “risks” or “owing us”. It’s a commercial negotiation- the contractual terms govern the off-field behaviour, the dollars are solely about on-field performance/potential.

Losing Moore would also give us a fantastic opportunity to save money and gain an untried kid ...

In fact that fantastic opportunity comes with every good player.

And the great thing is if the untried kid is any good, we can do it again and again.
We just need the top pick to correspond to when we are in contention. That’s the hard part.

Let’s say De Goey and Moore both re-sign for three years. That’s a huge amount of salary to commit to a period of time where we won’t be making finals.

Jordy’s manager, the aptly named Ryan Vague and one of his ‘brains trust’, will be tested in the contract negotiations. I’ll put my money on Wrighty winning that one. I can’t see us paying him much more than his current $800k. Maybe the length of contract will be the issue. They seem to be getting longer…

Has the bottoming right out and loading up on draft picks theory worked for any club? Maybe you could say it did for Melbourne, but I don't want to watch the Pies being that bad for that long. How many top picks have the Blues had over the last 20 years - might be beginning to get ready to compete with most of those picks having come and gone.
