I am in mega jelly of some of these setups here! Want to buy myself a retro console..can't decide what though. Thinking Game Cube or Sega Saturn (though Sega Saturn seems much harder to find!). Any recommendations on a 50" TV?

Yeah get a tube for old consoles (like the one in my OP) or if you HAVE to go a modern set, make sure it's plasma. SD content looks a bit better on plasma and plasmas are better for gaming in general in terms of response time.

Good luck finding a new plasma these days though. Luckily my main TV is a plasma, but went looking for another one a few months back and they are nowhere to be found. All LEDLCD.

Yeah eBay and shittier electronics stores are the best best for even semi-decent plasmas. I had 2 and just sold one mainly because it was old and was PUMPING out heat, but it was arguably one of the best plasmas ever. Panasonic 800A. I still have a Panasonic in my game room (as you can see). Won't ever get rid of it.

Got a 800A and they ae good.

You can make old consoles like N64s look fantastic on the recent Sony Bravias like the 70 inch LED by playing around with the insane level of customisation. You don't need a CRT because it won't look better once you get your custom settings right.

Gamecubes are much easier to find games for, especially in Australia so I would lean towards that. Saturn has a tonne of great games if you can get your hands on it though. Some games can be very expensive though.

I think you won't regret getting a retro console. I set up my PS2 again a few months ago and have been buying some more games for it. Great decision, it's ridiculous how many great games there are on the PS2. As for GameCube vs Sega Saturn, I'd say GameCube. Haven't played Sega Saturn but it's hard to overlook the great games on the GameCube from the usual suspects in Mario, Zelda, F-Zero, Super Smash Bros, Metroid etc.

My cousin had a Saturn before they sold it for the PS2, Daytona and Virtua Cop were the stand outs for us but he had a bunch of others. That was the only time I knew anyone who had a Sega, really, although my first console was a Mega Drive inherited from my old man.

The real competition would be Gamecube vs Dreamcast, you couldn't possibly choose the Saturn over one of them. For me I think the Cube could be the best console, last of the "retro"/non-HD consoles, the plug-and-play simplicity without the incoming updates/versions/internet ruled world. The Cube and PS2 sit high on the list for sure. Cube has 4 player and some of the best 4 player games, which may get it the nod.
