Wasnt Suma rumoured to not be chosen for the coaches role because he told the club that most of the players overrated themselves? Maybe Suma was right? ;)
No. Simpson's football nous impressed the selection committee and board in presentations when Sumich was the favourite and some at the club thought he'd be rubber stamped.

You are thinking of Hardwick at the Tigers. And in reverse (I'm not even joking).

Reading this thread has made me dumber.

Hardwick told the board he thought the players were overrated and so they hired him?

They recruited wardon the guy from hawthorn who had success with the hawks but why can't it be done with west coast? Is it the players?

Sando wasn't sacked because of his coaching ability... he was sacked because half the playing group hated his guts.

He lacked a bit of intellect as well. Blaming weather and used the one kick from a GF card too often. Mentality of a loser. He had no game plan post the passing of Dean Bailey.

Funny how nisbett last week said that in order to fix up the clubs off field image they sacrificed its on field success, well i can see thats what they have done with their recruiting. since 07-10 the only close to elite players we have are Shuey, NN, Gaff and Gov. Only NN i would have as Elite and from that list only 2 are mids. Buts whats more dissapointing is our drafting between 11-13. I think the recruiters need to be sacked this year. I remember a few years back our list was stocked with small defenders.

I would persist with Simpson, unlike Sanderson he seems like a better people person. Id give him a chance to make changes in the off season, and bring in a fresh midfield coach and look at recruiting. I have faith in Redden but Jetta is shithouse and has been for years, his last game for the Swans was one of the great pathetic performance. There is a fair bit to work with, you guys were 4 goals up in the third. Hopefully you'll land a decent midfielder and piss Masten off, see improvement out of Duggen/Sheed and have a better game plan.

most of us have no issue with simpson but we know that our list(midfield wise) is pretty average and our recruiters are crap. I too have faith in a fit redden but i dont think he will find any form soon. Jetta one is interesting. apart from finals last season, he had a pretty good season. 18 touches from jetta usually means 5 or more quality inside 50's, a goal or two and around 500m gained. he was brought in as a the icing on the cake type player. for me he is a down hill skier but if we get back to our 2015 ways he will be one of the players that the media will be once again craving. However we still need at least another B+ Inside/outside mid. It could be sheed next year with a full preseason and another year in the gym. Even When averaging 20 disposals last season, he was around our best players in a lot of games. Duggan on the other hand i think will take time and i think will one of those players that reach their potential around 24-25. He just seems to do his best work in and under but his frame is way too light atm.

I think we are lacking leadership within the Mid group. Our captain is in the backline and our Vice Captain is in the forward line. Shuey has some leadership potential and Priddis leads by example, but we really don't have many leader types playing in the middle of the ground. Going forward Duggan comes across as that type of player (which we haven't had post Cousins) and I hope we keep persisting with him.

With Hutchings and Masten being Captains in their draft years they would have some sort of leaderships skills.

Or no one else was appropriate. Not too many from the WA U/18s of Masten's year currently running around in the AFL.

EDIT - there are, but they are mostly the underagers of that year who were drafted in 2008.

Been saying this for years now. It's the biggest issue we face IMO. Too many players leading by example on the training track and in the 3 km time trials, but none doing it on field.

All of our senior players/leaders are inward-looking types who worry about their own business and making sure they're doing their job to the best of their ability, but they don't act to inspire those around them. Even JK is a bit like this, and he's the most vocal of the lot.

Also our mids lack the competitor instincts to compete and try to beat good mids .

What typically happens is shuey and priddis realise our other inside mids are hopeless (actually who are our other inside mids ...please sheed come back)

So Shuey try's too too much and gets caught

Watch swans midfield.....they give the first option and quickly then spread ...so too dogs

At least this thread is now containing posters who can clearly see it is the players on our list that are stalling our improvement. Not even Clarkson could do much with this midfield group.

This team just cannot consistently get clean and fast hands out of a contest. Priddis does this okay when he's in form, but the others don't.

There was a passage of play in the second quarter of last year's game v Richmond at the MCG where we had Gaff, Shuey, LeCras, Sheed and Masten, I believe, all involved in a great chain of fast hands which ended up with a set-shot for Sheed, which he nailed.

We have not been able to do this consistently, and TBH I have not seen us do it at all this season.

Our midfielders aren't clean with handball to targets

They often handball to stationary players or backwards .......

Have to learn how to throw the ball more too. Teams have been getting away with it all year

All I've seen this week is people posting across most threads that our midfield sucks
