skilled stadium deal...how unfair for Richmond?

I fully agree with sausage roll. It's once again an example of fixturing bias by the AFL. I can probably understand it with high-drawing Collingwood, but I think it's ridiculous that Carlton and Essendon don't ever have to make the trip down the Princes Freeway.

I wish we played at Geelong every year. I miss suburban grounds and am sick and tired of going to the same grounds every week.

I agree, I like it when Richmond travels down to sleepy hollow.

Also, lmao at people now complaining that Collingwood don't have to travel to Geelong, is this on par with their lack of interstate travel now?:D

it really comes down to where geelong wish to play their home game against richmond compared to where geelong wish to play their home game against carlton/essendon/collingwood.

in reality, it's geelong that is sacrificing their home ground advantage when they play carl/ess/coll moreso than giving richmond a disadvantage.

just as kangaroos sacrificing their home ground advantage against brisbane at carrara or, last year, sydney in canberra.

it's geelong's choice, not so much the afls - all in the name for an easier buck.

As many have said, its Geelongs choice to play the high drawing Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon in Melbourne as our home game, just like it is this year where we play Footscray at the Dome as our home match because it will get a decent crowd.

I think we played Richmond at the TD as a home game a few years back and we only got 30k, it is all about the drawing power, if Richmond were to make the top eight this season then the people at the Cats might want to play a home game vs them at the dome as all the bandwagoners would jump on.

It like most situations in the AFL, we have to go to Tassie next weekend as we don't draw well vs Hawthorn, same with Footscray playing Freo in Darwin. If the Tigers were good enough they should beat us down here.

10 of the last 11 years??? Where did you get that from? Would be closer to 5 times in the last 11 years i think and as we won there last time its hardly a guarenteed loss.

Agreed - there was a gap at one stage, from Round 9 2001 and Round 22 2005. Wasn't the last time you played there 1997 before the one in 2001?

5 is definitely closer to the mark.

Just to add to that, I’m all for bagging to Dons but I’m going to come in to bat for them…the fact that Essendon play the majority of their home games in a 50,000 seat stadium (where every game is ticketed) has got to reduce their attendances – rarely do games attract more then 45,000 when games are ticketed, even if sold out.

This year Essendon play 7 home games at the Dome and 4 at the MCG...

You can’t help but wonder what Essendon’s attendances would have been had they played 7-8 home games at the MCG instead of Docklands – remembering they did average 55,000 (larger then the capacity of the Telstra Dome) in their final year as tenant of the MCG – since then attendances have grown 12.5%...

To outdraw 3 of the 4 MCG tenants – despite playing at a venue with a significantly reduced capacity and free tickets available is an impressive feet.
Good point! Essendon were crazy to go for the Dome. What were they thinking, what were the AFL thinking? (DOH!) They were thinking lets force people to go to our new stadium, wether they like it or not. Lets throw in some seats that you can't see the whole ground from just to ice the cake.

Carlton last played at Geelong last game of 1996, Essendon in the second last game of 1993 and Collingwood in about Round 15 of 1999 (I think).

They should all have to play at Geelong.
Yeah right! They couldn't even an organise a pre seaon game down there, it was a disaster, do Geelong supporters even know what 60 000 people look like? Maybe Collingwood could play Carlton at Princess Park too. How does this sound, build it and they will come. SS is barely adequate as an AFL venue as it is.If you want seat prices up and revenue down force Collingwood and Essendon to Geelong.

If it is so absurd, then let's see if coll, ess and Carl would prefer to go to skilled or miss under their current cosy arrangement.

To give these bottom sides such an advantage is simply unfair.
no side shoudl be exempt form playing anywhere, let alone for years on end.

I think you'll find that the Cats _prefer_ to play Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon up the road. It's all about revenue unfortunately. I'd be all for us selling our home game to Richmond at the MCG if we could get 45k+ crowds for the match. I don't see how that'll help the Tigers though, it'd still be a guarenteed loss ;)

They were offered such a sweet deal it was impossible to knock back, I wish they did as that place is a curse to footy.

anyone notice St Kilda, Essendon and Bulldogs get more soft tissue injuries than most other teams?

The AFL was responsible for the stuff up in the first pre-season game, not the club. If it wasn't for the revenue I'd be all for maintaining our 'home ground' advantage for every home game.

It's got nothing to do with Richmond,Essendon,Carlton or Collingwood and everything to do with Geelong.

Well ok, lets give carl, ess coll the choice of where they would rather play geelong? Mm, let me see....i wonder how many would choose to play them at skilled?

TO try and present an argument that it isn't advantagous is just plain ignorant!

Absolutely. It's Geelong's choice, nothing to do with Richmond. If Richmond end up down there and Collingwood don't, then that's just too bad. Blame Geelong for compromising the draw.

It's hardly compromising the draw. We're only allowed to play 8 games down at Skilled. I imagine we're given some leeway in deciding which home games we'd like to play up in Melbourne and is it really surprising to anyone that they'd pick the games that will draw the largest crowds?

For whatever the reason, you're conceding home ground advantage to a few clubs every year, much like how some clubs play home matches interstate. Turning home games into neutral games.

Hard to argue that isn't compromising the draw, even if it is beneficial for the club's finances and membership.

Geelong has a large Melbourne based membership - 3 home Melbourne games goes a long way to selling the membership packages based on all games in Melbourne.

This is the fundamental reason for the games in Melbourne.

The Melbourne teams that play in Geelong are rotated to a slight degree. As the Doggies and Saints stocks have improved (i.e. Improved attendences and Form) over the last few years these Geelong Home games have been played at the Fone dome.

Hence Richmond has been rotated back to Geelong.

Carlton Collingwood and Essendon may never play in Geelong again.
