Barrass is coming along really well and has been close to selection a couple of times. Simpson said this week that as a coach and match commitee they now feel Tom is in a place where he can play AFL after beginning the year in the East Perth 2's.

If he hasn't debuted before than I think he'll debut in Round 18 against the Suns as either an extra tall down back or replacing a rested McGovern or Schofield.
barrass should get a gig now..

What's the update on Ryan Burton? Love the sound of him, just hope he can bounce back from injury.

It's a terrible injury - he basically shattered the major weight bearing structure in his leg.

I fractured my tibial plateau (no way near as serious as 10 screws being inserted like Burton) and my leg is still hurting a year later, still unstable despite being able to do some pretty good leg weights (obviously part of rehab) as well - I imagine it will be much worse for him.

Fingers crossed for him - the good thing is it's an injury that's very unlikely to re-occur given it should have healed properly, a concern would be future soft tissue and tendon/ligament injuries around the knee but mainly arthritis in his knee (which could hit before he's played 5 years in the system).

Despite his talent, if he can't get back on the ground this year to see how it will affect his movement it would be a massive risk to draft him first round.

I would expect West Coast would focus more on the smaller types this year, but then again they and Adelaide have shown how effective having a surplus of KPP's can be.
Agreed, their key position development has been very very good over the years and fans from a team like mine who only ever develops key defenders, ruckman and small/medium sized forwards are spewing why we never go down the KPF route properly and just settle for undersized forward lines when they give up on their developing stocks (Eade and McCartney eras). West Coast 06 (Hansen, Lynch), Adelaide 97-98 (Robran, stood up in their finals) and Geelong (07-09 Mooney) won flags having only B grade key forwards you could say the same with Sydney in 2012 with Sam Reid also.

Both teams only have developed a handful of A graders that become 200 gamers because they are so hard to find, but their B grade KPP rates are phenomenal over the years, I'm just thinking back to about 2000 however, I haven't included pure defenders here though, most of these guys mentioned were utilities playing back and forward, ruck-forwards or key forwards.

West Coast B graders or thereabouts: T Wilson (solid for 2 years), Lynch, Hansen, Sinclair, Lycett, Seaby, Staker, Hunter (B+ Xfactor type) etc all serviceable and McDougall had 1 good year but fell behind injury/form.

Adelaide B graders or thereabouts: S Stevens, M Stevens (was at North early in his career, but played best footy at Adelaide), Welsh (bit undersized but an excellent forward all the same) Perrie, McGregor, Hentschel (career wrecked by injury, would've been decent imo), Bock (B+ injuries hurt his career too though), Tippett (he really is just a B+ type), Jenkins

Just wish we could develop a few, we only get trade ins who generally flop except Welsh and Hall on their last contracts. At least Boyd is still developing and Redpath is in the team at the moment who we developed so time will tell where they are rated. Jones was a dud same with Cordy. Skipper was serviceable but his lack of size hurt him as he was a mobile ruck who pinch-hitted up forward occasionally.

Roughead is our only B grade KPP utility imo that we've developed over that time, Minson did play forward occasionally early in his career, but is primarily only a ruckman.

Grant, Croft and Darcy held our team together for years in the KPP department, Danny Southern was great too but his career was wrecked by injury and he lost the passion for the game at 25yo, while James Cook played some solid footy under Wallace but disliked training. A lot of Dogs fans including myself point the finger at Scott Clayton and Rocket for not developing anyone in the 2000s ultimately costing us on prelim night in 08-09 relying on Johnno, Hahn, Welsh, Murph and Minson etc to kick a score, then by 2010 we were shot with Bazza as half our team carried injuries then declined rapidly 12-18 months later forcing the rebuild that we are 60% through currently. Our chief recruiter Simon Dalrymple has made some amazing finds like Dahlhaus and Johannisen in the rookie draft, 1st year players McLean, Webb, Dale and Daniel all playing this year and nailing high picks in Macrae, Stringer and Bontempelli since a disastrous opening draft in 2009 (Howard, Tutt and Markovic, overlooked Fyfe, Carlisle etc), but he hasn't nailed a key forward pick yet which we need to help Boyd out going forward.

I think we need 1 ruckman, 1 KPD, 1 KPF and some outside run over the trade/draft period. Ready made small defenders would be nice too with Boyd and Murphy's careers in their twilight and Biggs/Darley/Fuller fill me with no confidence outside of Webb, Johannisen and Wood, if Tucker surprisingly fell into the 2nd round or if the Dogs had a late 1st rounder and no KPFs are available I reckon he'd fill a future need.

anyone get out to any sanfl action on the weekend? and who do you think were stiff to miss out on the national combine. Thought Haysman, Agostino and Agius were particularly stiff to miss out!

does anyone have or know where I can find a list of the full invitee list for the national combine? Cheers in advance.

Hey Skippos
Just want your take on Charlie Curnow's skills and decision-making. Put simply, is he a good kick, can he hit targets and does he make the right decisions under pressure ?
Thanks

Yeah I got out to some. Normally do. Focusing more on next year's crop though at this stage, seen enough of this year's to be confident in my assessments.

Thought all three were stiff along with Olekalns and Combe. But understand why all were. Very glad Cam Hewett got an invite.

Jordan Dawson debut for sturt was impressive ...190cm high half fwd , strangely didn't figure much in champs .....don't reckon haysman gets drafted , well behind Gresham and snelling for midget type

I'll get back to you within a week. Still have two games of his to review that I haven't yet.

And just on Curnow, when you do review those games and comment, if you could also kindly add in what position / role you think he'll develop into at AFL level that would be great too ...

Anyone who stands out at this stage for next year's draft, apart from the obvious (Scharenberg, Graham, Slimming)??

Allison looks good but his an Academy player and most likely a top 5 pick
Nice for you guys to be getting lots of draftable players from your academy. Reckon you must be really pissed about the number of go homers you've had recently and from reports Aish may be another one.

Be nice when your list has the same % of locals as all the southern clubs to stop the exodus. Think you'll score big at this years draft snaring Schache before you need to burn picks/points on your academy gems.

Im guessing Port will be around pick 10 this year. Who do you think are the possibles Port will Take.
I'd like Port to go for the Best Inside Midfielder that is quicker than Ollie Wines

Was concussed in week one and missed two weeks. Came back in week four, played half a game out of the square and was dropped. Truly ridiculous.

I'm a massive wrap on him. Really like him.

Assuming you're just talking SA?

They're the three standouts and all elite talents. Graham and Scharenberg will be around the top 10, Slimming more liable to move given his style but I think he could be too, really rate him, such a nice kick among other things.

Ladhams and Sweet are both good as ruck options. Mitch Carter should be a handy full forward. Dakota Nixon and Ben Jarman should add to that midfield very nicely. Jordan Comitogianni is very prolific while Sam Walker will definitely be around the mix. Andrew Coombe should work well as a third tall type forward or potentially a tall mid depending on development while I except Schmusch to play as an underager down back and Pascoe through the middle as another underager.

Do you have any thing on Darcy Cameron from W.A.

Seems to have made some real strides over the last month or two. I'm still not sold on him, reckon he's good at a lot of things but lacks a point of difference and elite attribute. I wouldn't draft him.

I don't feel like there are any worthwhile inside mids with pace this year. Mathieson, Dunkley, Oliver, Kennedy, Mills and Hopper aren't going to be much quicker than Wines. Partington and Clarke are more outside but have that burst speed when they play inside, they're just not pure insiders. Jadyn Brind as a later bet has some real power to him and Cam Hewett's pretty nimble inside. But no real Dangerfield/Shuey/Freeman type explosive inside mids. Charlie Curnow might be a bet if you want to play him as an inside mid and not a key forward, but aside from that the stocks are either bare or short people (Lovell/Gresham)

Skippos,
Word is we are looking at taking Clayton Oliver in the 3rd round. He's played a few vfl games for us. What can you tell me about him?

If he's available there. Every chance he's not in a thin draft. Looking into some more footage of him but based on what I'm observing I think it's entirely plausible that he pushes late.

Typical big bodied inside mid. Loves a clearance. 187/86 so has some size about him. Excellent country footy record and seems to have improved quite a bit. The ? is that his TAC performances came when the big boys were off at the champs but his VFL form makes up for that. Gee Dub will know more as he's based in the Murray area so I'd head on over to his thread if you want a more detailed answer.

Tom Keough of West Adelaide, do you think he would be a chance, as a late pick, or Rookie,
and would Beech be looked at again

I like Keough. Unsure of his height though, have read 191 and 194 at times. My final verdict rests on that. As a rookie I'd be looking at him but I'm not sure he's someone who's genuinely going to walk in and improve a 22, perhaps plug a hole or add depth like a Terlich or Duigan have in the past but to perhaps a slightly higher level.
