slight adaption to the lottery draft concept

Was talking with a Collegue today about the draft as I was saying the way Port is being coached, it looks like they are coaching for draft picks (In my mind anyway).

He said the draft is B.S and I agreed.

We came up with the conclusion however there does need to be a comprismise.

Therefore what we devised were a couple of strategies.

A) the Lottery be based for the first round only, giving all teams a % chance of getting the number 1 pick but obviously weighted.
B) 2nd round onwards it reverts back to the previous system of picks being based on ladder positions.
C) Either the priority pick stays but starts from the 2nd round OR the bottom 4 teams are allowed to have two extra players on their list at base rates. (eg Elevated Rookie players or 2 extra draft players), excluded from the cap, obviously these players could not be former AFL listed players.

By allowing two extra players on the list it increases the depth of the struggling club to allows them to try and find that bonus Gem. Once out of the bottom 4 the club needs to revert back to the normal salary cap and playing list, which could add to the player pool for other clubs.

It's an adaptation of the standard lottery concept which still helps the struggling clubs but also increases the integrity of the season and playing for draft picks.

Just my two bobs worth.

enjoy

I agree with intent but the trouble with a lottery ( like the NBA ) is that the struggling team may end up missing out on the players they need.

Imagine if Geelong last year had a 1% chance of getting first pick but inspite of this they land #1 pick. They won the GF by over 100 points and then get #1 pick , yes I can see people thinking this would be fair.
Maybe the first round should be for the teams that finish out of the finals , and this round could be the raffle weighted not just on one seasons results.
In the end the draft will always be imperfect , its a socialistic tool to try to keep the the comp reasonably even.

But the NBA lottery IS only for the teams that miss the playoffs, and it's only for the top 3 picks. So the team that comes last can't fall below the 4th pick.

Good points.

Well then maybe it could be adapted for the 16 to 9th placed sides.

I believe there should be a lottery for picks 1-4 and another for 5-9 this would take out any incentive to tank anywhere and with the team that finishes 8th being eligible to paticipate in the 5-9 draft.
it would work like this
2 lottery's 1 for 1-4 & 1 for 5-9.
1-4 picks between 16-13th palced sides lottery
the 8th team gets first draw of the 5-9 draw if they draw a pick between 5-9 then the 9th team goes out of the draw.
This is an incentive to get higher than 9th no tanking
A bit involved but just putting it out there.
