Or doesn’t suit your narrative. That’s from 12 years ago. My post was in reference to this game. And the reference to spite by a port poster. Of which Port players have clearly displayed off field significantly more than our players in the past 12 months.
Okay, let's limit it to the past 12 months. Suits your narrative. Think about it.

I would be interested to see a list of all the incidents in the history of showdowns where a port player has taken out a crows player like this. Pickett knocking out Biglands, Lycett taking out Patrick Parnell also come to mind along with the ones above. Matthew Thomas ending Trent Hentschell’s career is another one.

Here's the ones that I remember

Shaun Burgoyne knocking out Bassett in 2003

Go to 1 hour 54 minutes

Byron Pickett knocking out James Begley in 2005

Pickett knocking out Biglands in 2005

Matt Thomas destroying Trent Hentschel's knee in 2006 with an extremely dangerous tackle

Matt Thomas knocking out Bassett by driving him into the ground via a really dangerous tackle with his arms pinned in 2008

Same game in 2008 Dean Brogan lines up Luke Jericho

Scott Lycett knocking out Mchenry with a dangerous tackle in 2021

SPP hit on Mark Keane in the pre-season game this year.

There's a pattern here with this type of stuff and it's not a coincidence that when it happens it always seems to be a Crows player on the receiving end and not the other way around.

This topic should have its own thread.

Or doesn’t suit your narrative. That’s from 12 years ago.

On the very same page people are trotting out violent injustices visited upon the heads of poor old Crows players by the vicious and evil PAFC, some of them stretching back nearly 20 years but something from 12 years ago is somehow irrelevant.

We can talk about Bickley breaking Wakelin's jaw, or even in the weekend's showdown, Thilthorpe dropping Jones on his head.

Then there's these.

Domenic Cassisi (2008)
Injury: Broken jaw.
Incident: In 2008, Domenic Cassisi suffered a broken jaw after being struck by Crows' Nathan Bock during a Showdown match.

Hamish Hartlett (2014)
Injury: Concussion.
Incident: Hamish Hartlett was concussed after being hit by Patrick Dangerfield during the 2014 Showdown.

Robbie Gray (2014)
Injury: Rib injury.
Incident: Robbie Gray sustained a rib injury after a heavy bump from Crows' Andy Otten in the 2014 Showdown.

Hamish Hartlett (2015)
Injury: Rib and lung injury.
Incident: Hartlett was again injured in 2015, this time suffering a rib and lung injury after a hit from Crows’ Luke Brown.

Tom Jonas (2020)
Injury: Broken rib.
Incident: During the 2020 season, Tom Jonas suffered a broken rib after a collision with Crows’ Taylor Walker.

Ollie Wines (2021)
Injury: Dislocated shoulder.
Incident: In 2021, Ollie Wines dislocated his shoulder after a heavy tackle by Crows' Rory Sloane.

This is simply to inject a bit of reality into the picture being painted about the evil and nasty old Power and the poor old Crows. I don't normally run around compiling lists of injuries... But it doesn't just run one way. Let's not pretend it does.

So only 2 head impact related injuries in 17 years. Thanks. You've just proven our point.

No front on contact free??
Frontal contact is banned in a marking contest - but this wasn't a mark. Keane punched the ball forwards, and Rankine jumped up to grab it.

Similarly, frontal contact is banned when a player has their head down over the ball - but once again, this is not the case for the Houston/Rankine incident.

Houston was entitled to make frontal contact, but not if it had sufficient force to constitute "Rough Conduct", and not if he took Rankine high - both of which occurred.

Oh I’m glad you brought up “dangerous” what Thilthorpe did is every damned bit as “dangerous” as what Houston did any outrage over that in here ladies and gentlemen?

My point as with the starcevich example is it isnt only outrageous only when a crows player gets hurt

Would you, kindly, **** off.

Notice the difference - most of what you posted are injuries resulting from legal acts (rib and shoulder injuries), vs concussion against Crows players.

Get a clue.

Port fans coming to crows board? Must have won a showdown for the first time in years.

Wonder if everyone will stick around when Port poos their pants in finals and go out in straight sets, again, especially now they have no sniper Dan Houston knocking people out so they can win games.

Straight sets for our jealous little brother.

So you're teling me this is ok and allowed?

Very similar except for the concussion.

Essentially, yes. It only becomes illegal if the conduct is unreasonable or contact is high, in which case it becomes a Rough Conduct charge. The decision whether it's unreasonable takes into account factors like the degree of force, whether the player is in a position to defend themselves, whether they are in a situation where contact should be expected.

Frontal contact in and of itself is not banned unless it's in a marking contest, or the player has their head down over the ball.

I'm shocked by this. I was sure this sort of act had been outlawed back in the 90's.

Fair point but injuries can come from legal incidents. What is the suspension record of each club in Showdowns?

This is a common misconception, given the number of "shirtfront" bumps which have ended in Rough Conduct charges and suspensions. It is all too easy for a frontal bump to be assessed as being "unreasonable", resulting in Rough Conduct charges being laid, and many (most) recent examples have ended up this way.

What we have here is a dividing line between what's theoretically permissible within the rules, and what is physically possible in the real world. Theoretically, the frontal bump is still legal. In reality, it's almost impossible to frontally bump a player without it rising to the level of rough conduct.

According to the rules, it's still legal. Functionally, it's no longer a part of the game.

Legally, frontal contact is only banned in the two cases I have previously listed.

What about the charging rule? The proximity of the ball doesn't matter either that one - Houston's contact was absolutely unreasonable and unnecessary given he had the time to just make a basic tackle.

Don't forget:
Sam Powell-Pepper (2017)
Injury: Pride
Incident: Tried to be a tough guy and take out Douglas in the first 5 minutes of the game with a bump before realising he was actually far softer (than Richard Douglas of all people).

Absolutely it was unreasonable, which is why he was charged with Rough Conduct.

Interestingly, Charging is listed as a Classifiable Offence in the AFL Tribunal Guidelines, but there is no definition for this offence in Section 4.3 (where most other offences are defined).

Charging is, however, defined in the Laws of Football as follows:
Charge or Charging: the act of a Player colliding with an opposition Player where the amount of physical force used is unreasonable or unnecessary in the circumstances, irrespective of whether the Player is or is not in possession of the football or whether the Player is within five metres of the football.
Presumably the authors of the Tribunal Guidelines document didn't see any requirement for expanding on this definition.

I can't remember the last time the Charging offence was used. These days they tend to use the Rough Conduct charge to achieve the same effect, probably because it's more rigorously defined in the Tribunal Guidelines.

He should be booed and heckled mercilessly for the rest of his career in Games v us

Every game every touch - I don’t actually think he has the mental fortitude to work through that

Didn't front up to his 5AA breakfast spot.

Probably won't be on there ever again.

Should have been a free?
