So how do you rate our 2015 trade period?

I agree, I thought GC and GWS were big losers trading out mature bodies and mainly getting picks which aren't as useful to young teams. Especially GC who don't have as much talent coming through their academy.

I don't claim to know a lot about the academy guys but our board has been talking up brad scheer and someone Bowes. Reckon they will be top 10-15 midfield talent at next years draft.

I saw this trade period as shuffling, while minimising risk of going backwards and creating opportunities to improve around the ground.

In the very best case, this would be an amazing outcome, at the worst, we stay about the same.

Considering the circumstances, and the reality of trade time, I dont really see how our team could have done much better - would have preferred Norths 2nd next year rather than their 3rd, but when the clock ticks at the end sometimes you dont have much choice. B for me.

Let's face it.......just like injuries, Trade Week can be good bad or indifferent, depending on whether you are lucky enough.

I mean the media are falling over themselves about the brilliance of Geelong's trading but it's easy to be a trade genius when you have the likes of Dangerfield and to a lesser extent, Scott Selwood falling into your lap

BRISBANE
IN:
Jarrad Jansen, Josh Walker (Geelong), Ryan Bastinac (North Melbourne), Tom Bell (Carlton)
OUT: Matthew Leuenberger (Essendon), Jack Redden (West Coast), James Aish (Collingwood)
DRAFT PICKS: 2, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 78, 96, 114

Replace the above picks 38,39,40,41,42...........with 10 and 12, and you'll get a more accurate idea of how we've done.

I could replace it with 7, 10 and 12, and you can get a accurate idea of how we could of improved on our current outcome. It really doesn't matter now anyway.

Assuming Mills, Hopper, Kennedy get bid on before Keays and Hipwood our Picks 38, 39, 40, 41, 42 get bumped up by 2 spots. (GWS lose 10, 34 & Syd lose 33, 36, 37 before us. Presumably also lose more behind us). So they become 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 by the time we need to bid. That amounts to 2,325 points, an extra 271 points. Means we can match Keays and Hipwood at 9 & 10 worst case scenario and have the deficit small enough to literally not effect our first draft position by even a spot if we're finishing bottom 8 again.

Also the GWS/Sydney bids will probably bump our 5th round pick into the points too. Looks like we'll be able to match any bids for Chol/Williams with saved points in reserve if we want to and deem them worthy to spend a primary list spot on

Would we go up 3 spots GWS 2 go into 1 Swans 3 picks go into 1. So 3 spots.

I haven't fully digested the Bastinac/Aish thing (throw Redden into that too if you want, given his pick was involved in the trade).

All that said, I think it's a pretty balanced trade period (hence worthy of a C rating).

Under the circumstances, the biggest miss for me was missing out on signing Suckling because we were holding out for the Leuey compo. Had we read the play there better we could have foregone the Leuey compo, signed both Suckling & Whitecross already (the latter will still probably happen), and then who knows how the rest of the trade period goes. We may have been blindsided by the AFL in changes to the compo this year, but probably should have read the play better.

Other than this, I think we got the best we could under the circumstances. We certainly didn't kill it, but at least we didn't get bent over this year.

Leuenberger - caved after getting substandard compo.
Aish - caved and traded him after publicly stating he would be back at the Lions.
Bastinac - overpaid terribly for him.
Trade of picks - not good. Need to factor in the players we now need to delist.

Redden - got less than value but close.

Walker and Jansen - good value.
Bell - decent value.

C- is about as good as you could rate our performance. We have again signalled to the other teams that we are a soft touch and will fold every time. We need to get someone in who has some idea how to run a trade week.

Totally agree. Well stated. I am extremely upset. We need experienced people ,Yes , but we need these people to be passionate and loyal Lions fans. So we don't get screwed!!!

Aish pick 7 . Eddie is laughing at us!!!!!!!Mocking us !!!! Appalling. Leigh Matthews summed it perfectly. "We don't deserve a priority pick".Leigh we need people, that actually give a ....

FRUSTRATED.......:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::straining::straining::straining::straining::straining:

So the plan for next year - get one pick above where we expect Allison to go, and trade the rest of our picks for picks between 50 & 74. At the time of the trade, the points balance... but then after academy matching and other clubs passing we get better value (assuming we're throwing everything at academy kids again). Following this Eddie will lobby the AFL to change the system so we can't do it anymore. Make the best of it while we can!!

Yes Eddie will be very happy. Hahaha!!!

There are an unsurprising number of posters on this thread who only come around once a year to voice their anger and frustration at our trading and drafting. Looking forward to the next instalment.

I have the view that we have brought in some players to take some of the pressure off our young guys and give them the opportunity to develop, and that includes Hipwood, Keays and Schache. Sad to see Jack go, but something wasn't right and if there was one player that had me pitching the remote at the television this year it was him.
Aish, well we have replaced him with players with grunt. I, like others, kept looking for signs from him that he was going to be an elite talent - he never displayed it. If you are going to play footy at that size, then you have to play it a level far higher than he ever did for us.
Berger - hope he has a better run at it than he did here, but at the end of the day 100 games in 9 years isnt a great average and whilst we have done the right thing by letting him go, the club should also be commended for supporting him for the time that he didn't get on the paddock.
Sure, it wasnt as dazzling this year as last year was.
As for all the discussion of the "culture" of the footy club, playing devils advocate I ask the question what if its about those two not wanting to buy in? You cant please all the people all the time

pretty good...
Bastinac in a sceptic on but can see how he might pay off.
I love the Bell trade who will be much better then Tackle Only Redden
Walker & Jansen are a cheap risk
Secured Hipwood, keays and Allison next year

Only negative is that I would have like a chance to get a player in the 2nd round... bt I dont know how we could have achieved that once we went after Bell & Bastinac... so no biggie there

Rating = B

I think some people are looking at the trade period in isolation from the draft. They are really two halves of the one story. We came out roughly even in the first half. I actually think we gained more than we lost but people can debate that.

This is just half time.

The second half will net us three picks who are first round quality. In a shallow draft that is a huge win. That is when we will come storming home and have a very successful trade/draft period.

Right now I have us at a C. After the draft I think we will be a B+.

Presumably this is an outcome of the new points-based system. Can you explain to the unitiated like me how this occurs please. I assume we don't actually get picks 10 and 12, just their equivalent when it comes to the draft.

Your explanation might make me feel a bit better if nothing else.

Only really heard of Bastinac, tbh. Bell only came up on my radar when you all started talking about him...24yo and 52 games? Anyway let's all start a thread on what numbers they will wear next year (or has that already been done)?

Too many people on here are to quick to say we did poorly without any concept of the new points bidding system. We did what we had to. We have accrued enough points to attain Hipwood and Keays. We have set ourselves up for next year with points for Allison. Surely getting highly touted Queensland lads into the club is a high priority?

In essence in this years draft we will most likely pick up Schache - Hipwood - Keays. That's three players who are all rated by draft experts as being in the top 15/20. Add to that 4 solid players traded in - 3 of which will probably be in our side round 1 next year. Whitecross much be a big chance in the pre season draft?

Remember heading into the trade period we were being told by clowns like Barrett that another mass exodus was on the way. We lost a free agent in Leuy who wasn't out first choice ruck. We were hoping for a better compo pick out of him but sadly his age and new salary denied us that. Aish was never staying and Redden was the only real shock departure. What happened to Martin - Mayes - Green all leaving? Wasn't Zorko out as well?

So three players out and four in. I would be concerned if we kept losing players and struggled to get anyone back in. But we have got some decent players in who should make an immediate impact and Jansen might end up being the best of them. He is the size of Patrick Cripps and could be very handy for us in years to come in the midfield.

I think Schwab and co did a good job and we are back on the path to being a much stronger club in the years to come.

First to admit I have a poor understanding of both the AFL points system and quantum physics, roughly equivalent in my mind in comprehensibility.

However, it seems to me we have to some extent at least been dudded. For a start, LM should either have kept his word about trading Aish or shut his mouth. He ends up looking like a total dill. No-one in the AFL world will ever treat a similar edict from on high with any level of believability. I think this is a very serious problem for our club- we are treated as a joke and provide ongoing proof that we are. LM's status has to have been seriously damaged. And he's probably our most senior asset. To me, this is the most important outcome of the draft for us. Just a joke.

And at the end of the day- for what? Aish got traded and from what I can see for nothing outstanding.

We are treated as crap because we are.

Let's be honest- it shouldn't be that difficult, you would think, to improve a club where we ran second last in the AFL and nowhere in the NEAFL. Personally, right now and before a ball has been misdirected, I don't think we can say we have, based on the ins. Rather, there's a hell of a lot of reliance being placed on a couple of kids who, from my admittedly limited observations on perhaps 4 occasions, are not going to get anywhere near to turning around our fortunes by themselves. Ok, probably no-one is actually saying they will, but some around here are coming close to it.

Let's hope our on-field performance proves the Herald-Sun, which rates us clear losers out of the trade period, wrong.

I am just looking for a reason to get optimistic- please.

Massive over reaction.

We didn't go back to square one with Aish like we had to with the GH5. The was LM's stance.

We got a 120 game inside player who at his best is A grade.... Or so says a 100 or so pages on the North board. He's been forced to play an outside roll which hasn't suited him.

In terms of pure footy we may actually be better off... Only time will tell if Aish truly makes it. We also gained additional trading points for our Academy players and further strengthened our position in next years draft.

Leigh's comments had their desired effect. If you leave our club prematurely you'd better hope we can properly replace you otherwise you're futures uncertain.

We replaced our future 3rd round pick that we traded for Walker and Jansen. Consider them free because of the Aish trade

People making black and white comments don't understand the complexities involved here.

Very good point you have made there BrizzyBandit - we have got Walker and Jansen for free out of the Aish deal.
