So who won trade week!?

Negative 6 votes - Western Bulldogs: Anybody home there or did they go on holiday for week and a half between the signing of Suckling and trading Talia. BOOOOO ;)

Trading for trading sakes is ridiculous.

If they didn't think there was value available for their list by trading - it would be unprofessional to trade to appease the masses

They need two things - a quality ruck and a quality KPD

They made a play at the first which was rejected. They had a look at the only quality KPD available and chose to walk away which looks reasonable given the weeks' outcomes.

Not over yet.

SOS and Allen to discuss Tomlinson and SOS really wants him.

Yarran only leaving for pick 12.

Happy with Henderson, Menzel Bell + pick 41 for Pick 8, Pick 21, Kerridge, Plowman, Sumner, Lamb and Phillips.
o_O

I would say SOS has had a fairly ordinary start to his new job, let Yazza go for what in the end cost Richmond two second round picks after bluffing with Yarran so long that he then missed out on Tomlinson, with the players they lost he better hope there are some gems in the lucky dip bag of GWS players.

lost: Carlisle (big loss), Melksham (no biggy), Giles (VFL ruckman). pick 44. one spot slide in 2nd round
gained: pick 5, 6 spot upgrade from 63 to 57, craig bird.

Getting pick 5 gives us a solid B i reckon.
If 5 turns out to be a combo of Parish and Francis, i'll give that an A.
Or if we get a CHF who solves our forward line issues.
After Carlisle's actions in the US was he actually such a big loss, not necessarily the player you want around if your club is rebuilding and pick 5 is a big one.

Wasn't that the aim. Short term pain, long term gain. Couldn't be happier.

That's what I mean, short term will be frustrating. Not sure all fans will be happy with a long rebuild even though it is the right thing to do in this situation.

I think Carlton have done well.

They probably got unders on Menzel, but the GWS trade is a big win for them.

Obviously i think Port have done well with Dixon and Toumpas coming in.

The Pies getting Treloar and Howe, and if they get Aish is a win, but you'll have to see the fallout from next years draft before judging. Likewise Geelong

So, you need to see the draft 'fallout' for Gee and Coll, but Port have 'done well' trading out top picks for Dixon. You do realise Dixon is a touch older than Danger (and not in the same class)? It's an even stranger assessment when you consider that Port traded away top picks the two years prior too, for Polec and Ryder (who'll be 28 before next season). Some objectivity wouldn't go astray..

If Bennell stays on the park Freo are the clear winners. He doesn't need to stay off the drugs and he doesn't need to improve, he is already a gun. All he has to do is make sure he doesn't **** up so bad that he gets axed by the club (Cousins, Fev, Krakeour, Connors). If he does Freo have picked up a gun 20+ disposal, goal a game former number 2 pick for a second rounder a slight pick downgrade.

Bombers big winners too. Offloaded 2 of the 34 and picked up some good picks for them.

Geelong have seriously strengthened their list for the short term, but it will need to deliver a flag in the long term because they've given up a lot.

Losers? Probably St Kilda for me, as I believe Carlisle will be unavailable for the next 2 years. His video was pretty stupid too.

Carlton have lost a lot in the short term but it may or may not be beneficial in the long term.

That was a lowball trade. Not happy about it at all from our end - you guys have finally broken your duck on trade table but that was very dirty.

McKay wanted to get rid of him so not much anyone can do.

Ending up with 1,8,11,19 isn't a bad result and was required.

WINNERS
Essendon- Turned Carlisle & Melksham into 5 and 25.

Joel Selwood & Scott Pendlebury- Needed help, have it now.

GWS- Have 3 1st round draft picks in next year’s draft as well as gaining academy picks. Lost Treloar but should be able to cover. Kept McCarthy & Tomlinson.

Stephen Wells- The only recruiter to get deals done quickly. Got to go on holidays a week before everyone else.

West Coast- Jetta and Redden for Sinclair, Rosa and pick exchanges. Good value.

Adelaide- Dangerfield is a big loss but

LOSERS

Carlton Supporters- Did fairly well overall but next few seasons could be brutal.

Brendon Bolton- Does Carlton have patience to keep him throughout a long rebuild?

Point System- Created some odd trades. Needs tinkering.

St Kilda- Finally got their man only for it to blow up in their faces within days. Should be fine long term but embarrassing situation.

Richmond- Yarran is a good get but couldn’t get anyone to take their money (Treloar, Hartlett, Parker, Lobbe etc.). Not all bad as it means they keep draft picks and will get to go again next year.

WAIT AND SEE

Any team that gave up a future first round pick (Collingwood, Geelong, Melbourne). It has the potential to blow up in their faces.

Port Adelaide- Most interesting period personally. Dixon was expensive but could come off & Toumpass a potential bargain. Could be A+ or F in 3 years
Not sure where you get the list of players you say Richmond missed on, all clubs inquire about pretty much any available player, we missed on Treloar but if you look at what Collingwood have paid we had no hope as our picks would not have got the deal done and his pay is certainly not in line with our player payments, would have loved him so we did miss out there.

We got Yarran our main target for what was really two 2nd round picks, also got a player that could end up a very good pick from GWS for pick 70 and we retain our pick 12, not really a win but not a loss either, if Townsend is any where near as good as Miles then I would say we had a win.

Actually agree with most of this but I think you are a tad harsh on the Tigers. its confirmed we never offered lobe anything and also on Parker, hartlett etc, they were long shots but good on the club having a crack. You have ignored we have addressed two desperate needs in inside muscle and speed and paid a fair price for it, while keeping ALL of our top players this year and still have our first this year as well as our first round next year.

All in all, its a solid if not spectacular period. A winner as we have improved our side and still secured our future imo. I still remember this time last year, everyone tipped us to fall out the eight as we did not get a gun, and we go on to win 15 games, which could have been more if we did not start off so bad being 2-4.

I'm OK with out work, not ecstatic but ok

Better off having a swing and missing than not having a swing at all. Improved slightly in my eyes but one of these big names could be the difference between finishing 5-6 as opposed to top 4. Will still be in finals next year I imagine. Nailing a first round pick would help as well

Lots of winners in trade week. Geelong picked up a Key position defender, a serviceable ruckman and a gun midfielder, plus a backup midfielder. You'd take that for 2 x 1st and 2 x 2nd round draft picks.

Carlton got lots of young kids and early picks.

Essendon upgraded their draft picks and got rid of some dead-wood.

St Kilda have taken a punt on Carlisle, most people think it will work out, all depending on his attitude.

Richmond have done the same with Yarran.

All the players mentioned will probably benefit from their moves.

Adelaide picked up some players and picks to make up for the loss of Dangerfield.

I think the worst one was Melbourne trading pick 25 for Melksham, what were they thinking?!?!

Therefore, I declare Essendon the winner for getting pick 25 for Melksham, that's the best, most one-sided trade of the lot.

I personally think 19 was pretty much spot on and SOS should have taken it two days ago and focused on getting Tomlinson, I think that was Carlton's biggest mistake, desperately need some goal kickers at the Blues, of course if all of the GWS boys make it then you did well.

Geelong and Essendon big winners IMO.

Would like to know what happened with GWS/Carlton/Bulldogs at the end. Everything seemed sorted, Blues media rolled in, Tomlinson joined on Twitter, then it fell apart. Then the Blues accepted the Tigers' 19 seemingly to try and swing the Tomlinson deal for the second time, and it still didn't happen. Quite odd given how amicably GWS and the Blues had traded earlier.

You expect objectivity from a team I support?

That's why I used the phrase obviously mate.

Port traded high picks previously, yet not in this trade period, so that is a little off topic. We've found value later in previous drafts. and this is by all reports a weaker draft. I'd wager that in comparison to say a cats squad we have more guys in the 21 to 25 younger age bracket, but yes it could be an issue going forward if we don't keep our picks going forward

Fallout refers to the future picks and what number they are. If the cats finish 12th and their traded pick is 6th that's a loss, or of the win a flag and its 20, that's a different story. The future pick thing is unknown in afl circles

Collingwood have won IMO. They gave up a lot but Treloar is a star.
Geelong did well to get Danger. IMO the rest of their pick up's are meh.
Melbourne and the Blues did well to upgrade their picks. Melbourne trading next years 1st is a big risk though. The need to finish highe than 11 to make it work.

Tigers broke even IMO. Townesend improves our bottom 6. Yarran fills a need.

I must say I thought you had him then read a little later it fell through, it was a bit odd.

NOTABLE GAINS: Jack Redden, Lewis Jetta, Pick 23
NOTABLE LOSSES: Cal Sinclair, Pick 17, not trading for Jed Anderson.
MARK: B. Lost 3 players and round 1 pick, gained 3 player. Lost experience in Rosa and Selwood but gained it in Redden and Jetta. Getting Anderson would have been the real sweetener.

GAINS
  • Happy with the gains - Redden is another bigger bodied midfield extractor that on 2015 form is an upgrade on Selwood and a more inside player than Rosa. Initially I was convinced that pick 17 was overs for Redden and was hoping to facilitate an early second round pick exchange to get the deal done but again probabaly unrealistic. You don't get an experienced and contracted player like Redden on his own for less than a first rounder. He'll be a best 22 player barring injury
  • Jetta really could be anything. Gives an added dimension to our midfield with his leg speed and precise kick. Unfortunately we had to lose Sinclair which wasn't ideal at the time (blow softened by gaining Giles) as although he isn't a strong ruckman he is a hard competitor who can float forward and kick goals.
  • Glad that we could shuffle ourselves up to 23 today in exchange for 36 and 37. 23 is still a very live pick where as 36 or 37 is around the time the draft talent drops significantly. My ideal first selection at the draft has been Ryan Clarke for some time now and at our past first pick (31) it was just inconceivable that he'd be there whereas now the chances are better. If not Clarke we are in a good shot for O'Kearney as a more running midfielder and if we wanted to go for a more inside mid than Clayton Oliver I predict is available there.
  • Giles and 62 for 57 is a great get. Can't be underestimated that trade. Losing Sinclair was a pain but we've got a big ruck with proven AFL and State League experience waiting in the wings in Giles. Very handy back up if Naitanui or Lycett were to not be available
LOSSES
  • Pick 17 - This was my Ryan Clarke pick. Never easy to give away your 1st round selection but we get Redden who comes with a lot more expeirence and match ready attributes.
  • Jed Anderson - When I heard he was interested in going to West Coast I was over the moon and he became the prime target for trading in my eyes, we already had Redden and the Sinclair / Jetta trade was still in consultation. Just matched all the traits that I wanted and thought of him as an upgrade on Jetta. Didn't end up happening and to be honest it was probably an unrealistic hope that we would trade him in. Was really only linked to us initially and that was it.
  • Losing experienced players in Selwood and Rosa isn't great but realistically both were going to be depth midfielders in 2016 especially with the return of Duggan and adding Redden and Jetta. If I had to choose between the two I would have preferred to keep Rosa because of his outside midfield strengths but happy with the recompense we got for him from the Suns. He'll be a key outside midfielder there I've got no doubt.
  • Couldn't get a deal over the line for Brant Colledge. Not sure what happens with him, if the club wants to we can de-list in second intake of de-listings but will see closer to draft day I guess.

I'm a masses and I demand appeasement. Your right but trading for the sake of it is silly and they obviously didn't see a great need in revamping the list.

In saying that a ruck like Lobbe or one of the others that were available during trade period would have been a great get for them. I'm not convinced that trading out of the first round has been to smart on there behalf either. Essentially losing out on a quality young KPD in Collins.

Not to mention losing credibility so that next year when he keeps shifting what he says he wants, clubs will just wait him out.
