Essendon are prepared to trade Solomon for either Brown or Stephens. May not come off but Solomon is for sale.

They will need 2 of him to snare either Brown or Stevens IMO.

Exactly my sentiments. Or Solomon and their 1st round draft pick. Wouldn't be the second round draft pick, for the eighth-placed club that won't be good enough.

What about Richard Cole and first rounder for Solomon? Cole has always wanted to play for Essendon and has talent (hasn't showed enough yet though)..

If we trade Solly it won't be for another flanker or pocket player, we've got them in spades (McPhee, Welsh, McVeigh, Bolton, Haynes, Rioli, Wellman, Cupido just in the senior side), it will be for either a quality ruckman, a quality midfielder or a CHF option. Draft picks will be swapped either way, depending on players involved.

Is the draft order decided on positions at the end of the major round or home and away? Whatever the answer, Essendon's second round pick+a player won't be a sufficient temptation to get Port to offer them Stephens. And anyway, although the South Australian news said Stephens was not leaving for money considerations, it appears Carlton have offered him a large package. I don't know the current state of Essendon's salary cap woes but I do know that their last two trades were mainly to relieve pressure on the cap.

The reason Essendon loose Soloman is because of salary cap pressure. There is no way that either Brown or Stevens would be able to fit in.

If that's the case, the Essendon admin really need to lift their game. Sure Hirdy, Lloydy and Fletch are all big stars, but their second tier players aren't among the best in the league. Where as teams like the Power with playes like Wanganeen, Primus, Francou, James, Cornes, Tredrea etc and the Crows with Roo, Goody, Macca, Duck, Harty etc don't seem to be feeling the same pinch. You really have to wonder about them and the Tigers last year having to release Torney for salary cap reasons...look where they finished on the ladder.

Essendon could find the extra 100k if they wanted to badly enough, but if Solomon is playing hard ball then Sheedy is just as likely to **** him off, he's notoriously harsh to people who make demands of him and the club. Negotiation is fine, but if Solomon is trying to hold Essendon over a barrel, then we'll **** him off for the best offer possible.

the main problem is mercuri's backended contract. also, we paid over the odds to many of our 2000 premiership players, especially our 2nd tier players, because they were so sought after by other clubs.

and i don't think port fans can expect too much from stevens. if port ask for too much, then they risk losing him for nothing in the pre-season draft. your bargaining power is zip.

The draft order is worked out from the end of the finals, as in last pick in 1st rd, Brisbane, 2nd last pick Collingwood, 3rd last pick Sydney etc.

And from what I hear around town, Stevens and the Power didn't part on great terms either, so I'm not sure he'll be looking to do them too many favours.

port would actually be 3rd last pick, but other than that, you're right.

In this day and age this is how it has to be. I want Brown to stay, but if others are prepared to pay him over the odds and that's what he wants, so be it.

The important thing is that you get a decent trade for them.

If a club was to say we wont trade <insert reasonable player here> because he's my favorite, that club would end up like Carlton.

Isn't the final 4,

Lions
Pies
Swans
Power

The Swans would go 3rd infront of Power, because the side that knocked them out of the finals, the Lions, went on and finished higher up the ladders than the side which knocked Power out, .i.e. Pies finished 2nd. Thats how I beleived the final ladder positions finished.

it's based on where you finished on the home and away ladder.

So if the 8th placed side after the H/A wins the flag, they would still get pick 9, not pick 16?

no
port and sydney go out in week 3. port get 3rd last pick, sydney get 4th last pick.
adelaide and essendon go out in week 2. adelaide get 5th last pick, essendon get 6th last pick.
and so on

Ive actually just checked the AFL stat book, the final draft order corresponds with the final positions after the finals.

i.e 1998

pick 16: Adelaide 5th after the H/A, 1st after the finals got the last pick for the rd(Burton).

pick 15: Roos 1st after the H/A, 2nd after the finals got 2nd last pick(Rawlings).

pick 14: Dogs, 2nd after the H/A, 3rd after the finals got the 3rd last pick(Penny).

pick 13 Demons, 4th after the H/A, 4th after the finals got the 4th last pick(Lamb).
