Laser beams instead of goal posts, and install a chip into the ball so when it crosses the beam it activates an alarm somewhere and the umpire is notified, also has benefits from less likelihood of injuries and players colliding with them.

Not sure about the goal post idea, but having a chip in the ball is being looked at in the NFL to help with goal-line situations

By the way, the NFL has two 'goal' umpires, one for each post and is a system which works well, although there are less 'shots at goal' in the NFL and there are no behind posts to worry about either. But I can't see the AFL paying more for an extra two umpires (one at each end) for every game of the season. They'll just change the rule and essence of the game instead.
