That's what I mean lol... I don't remember that so much in the past, fifteen years ago.

Yep, couple of artists got 8 noms each, that's like peeps voting for every song on an album

I think there has been some analysis on this recently, consumers’ viewing habits have moved away from the standalone single and onto streaming albums.

That’s why we see the likes of Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar dominating the US Billboard charts nowadays.

As someone who enjoyed both Charli's and Billie's albums, having 16% of the countdown taken up by them is excessive. Definitely the case of die-hards spam voting their songs.

Do JJJ set a cap on the amount of songs an artist can chart? Five or something? Just imagine if Taylor Swift was eligible, that whole double album would've polled (and it was very uninspiring and bland).

Yep, JJJ has become very dancy and poppy in the past 5 years or so

It really is a shame how the expansive, delocalised wonder of digital media has made for... more centralised distribution.

As for the Triple J Hottest 100, I'm surprised it still has relevance. I used to host a Hottest 100 party each year but haven't since Covid. Didn't even know it was on until it was brought up here. It's not going to die ofc but it's days as a significant cultural event are over. I mean as if teens (JJJ's target demo) would listen to the radio now.

The list looks repetitive from a quick peruse (and less Aussies than normal right?) but all is forgiven since Shaboozey made top 20 💕

That was the worst song in it!

I do wonder about youth radio these days.

I had second hand cars with radios and CD players throughout my 20s - wouldn't a lot of young people be in the same boat and have no choice but the radio as a result? Albeit only while driving.

It does seem less unique than most Hottest 100 lists do (though I'm not necessarily complaining given I often found that I thought they were pushing the wrong barrow in their niche).

I just kept seeing the same artists over and over and over. Chipmunk made a great point about streaming and album listening being a cause.

Society in general, people need to feel validated and what better way than to feel like you fit in by listening to popular music. If our listening experiences were independent of public opinion I suspect the popularity of music would be vastly different.

The hottest 100 is cooked. A cover of one of the worst songs ever, that didn't sound any different to the original, finished top 3.

Vale JJJ
It was a mediocre cover, but I won't hear any slander against the original.

I used to do a radio show with a housemate on SYN and was a regular listener of community radio. But sadly I rarely tune in to the radio now when driving in favour of podcasts and listening to albums that friends and Pitchfork have recommended.

Most secondhand cars would have Bluetooth by now surely but yeah I was the same with just a CD player for my first car (which lasted 10+ years btw until it was stolen).

I don't care about the genres of music that's in the Hottest 100, the youth decides what's cool and there's good stuff in every genre. I just think it's a shame that it's getting more homogenous and that local artists are less appreciated.

One of my fondest memories is sat around with mates, waiting to hear the shitty song we recorded in an equally shitty makeshift bedroom studio get played on SYN. Went to school the next day feeling like an absolute rockstar lol

About half of the votes are in.

There's a stand-out top two atm but that, of course, can be reigned in.
The billy is tight-ish, but one song is emerging with three.
Only one song doesn't have votes yet.

I'll start tagging in an hour so, if you don't want the tag of shame, get voting!

Didnt realise they had a new album out. Heard nothing about it. What do the Mogwai fans here think of it? First few tracks didn't grab me but it picked up after that. There were a few moments that have that massive Mogwai sound I love. I listened to it in suboptimal conditions so need to revisit it with my good headphones. Predictably solid. Will probably gain a few points with a proper listen.
