South Australian football - where is it at?

The real problem is trying to sell a product with limited appeal to a limited market place.

Why ream the SANFL clubs for wanting to win footy games? How dare they?! Every independent club in the country that isn't an AFL club should just do circle work and drills just to find AFL players.

No one is blaming SANFL clubs for trying to win games. That is a stupid statement - Good bit of hyperbole.

Why are AFL clubs funding the SANFL competition to their own detriment? The balance is heavily favouring the SANFL clubs in SA while the balance is even in WA.

SANFL controls football in this state and only care about the SANFL.

They make 10 mill from the Crows and Port each year and don't invest any of it back into the clubs.

The money goes to bigger salary caps for the SANFL teams so they can recruit AFL has-beens instead of developing talent.

That seems to be my understanding.

In this regard, would it not be better for the SNAFL to be broken and a new system of governing SA foty brought in?

The advantage of the Victorian clubs in particular is they are member clubs representing and accountable to themselves alone.

Nothing to do with SA footy so I suggest you start a thread on this claim Mark - its regularly trotted out by Vic fans, never justified though & I'd suggest its so full of holes it cant be justified - not in this thread though please !!

You think it will turn the problems around .... ever the optimist.

It's only the start.

We've all known about the problems out at West Lakes - probably have been there since Adelaide played its first game out there.

Football at the highest level needed to be played at AO long before now.

There are other issues that have been canvassed - such as the SANFL situation.

Another problem is sponsorship of both clubs. Sadly for Adelaide in general, the economy isn't that flash and that there isn't a lot of natural sponsorshop dollars available in Adelaide when compared to everywhere else - by the time you take out the Clipsal 500 and the Tour Down Under out of the equation, there isn't a lot left over.

Adelaide has been lucky to retain Toyota as long as it has. Can Holden at Elizabeth be a help here - instead of funnelling money to Centrals? Port Adelaide does have a problem in getting sponsorship dollars from significant business interests flowing into it.

We can't have Holden because they are an Australian manufacturer who compete directly with the AFL sponsor of Toyota. We can't have Coopers breweries as they are a direct competitor of Carlton United also an AFL sponsor and same goes for Lyon Nathan (West End) who would have been a monty for sponsoring Port.

Things in Adelaide are on the up with billions of dollars soon to be poured into the state with Olympic Dam ($30b over 10 years), the warship contracts ($5b or $6b), as well as a number of other mines beginning operations and/or exploration. There is also the multi billion dollar upgrade of the riverbank precinct that incorporates Adelaide Oval and the new hospital and medical research facilities being built. Hopefully this equates to $$ towards the 2 AFL teams but only time will tell in that regard.

Once the move to Adelaide Oval happens the SANFL will still have AAMI Stadium and the masses of land around it to do with as they please. I'm hoping they are able to turn that into some type of perpetual investment that will replace the 2 AFL licenses as their major source of funding. This will be one of two ways the 2 SA teams can get independence, the other is the AFL takeover/bailout the SANFL and it becomes AFLSA but I think it will be the former.

Sick of the whinging from the two AFL clubs supporters that their problems are a direct result of the SANFL clubs.

Here is some advice:

Don't go and build 15 million dollar training facilities and then complain you are short of a dollar.

Don't go and buy into a pub that is that poorly performing and has no attraction for punters to go to and then complain you are short of a dollar.

Don't go and sack a coach, pay him out a million dollars and then complain that you can't pay your bills.

Actually go to your home games, I know eleven a year is so hard , because they are played either on a Friday,Saturday or a Sunday and at the unfortunate time slots of anywhere between 12.30pm - 8.30pm.

Stop blaming clubs that have a right to a decent return on assets that they own ( stadium , land and 2x AFL licenses) and have a crack at your football club's board of directors and the blokes that used to be sitting next to you at each game but now find it too hard to drive for 40 minutes and schedule 5 hrs of their lives every fortnight for 6 months.

The whinger says stop whinging lol

Just remember that the 100% of the AFC board are elected and chosen by the SANFL and 50% at PAFC. So who is actually running these clubs, the SANFL or the members?? Remember Triggy and Duncanson are appointed by the South Australian Football Commission. Do you think that the Port members were responsible in Keith Thomas getting the CEO position, nope not in a million years, he does however seem to be doing a great job so far.

You want to whinge about the 2 AFL clubs thinking that the SANFL shit don't stink forgetting that they are up to their necks in both the AFL licenses. They have had their hand in every poor decision made by Port and Crows. Get educated you fool.

Get off your high horse and keep your business at Woodville oval where your ignorance would be welcome.

Start getting your mates to some home games and feed that mouth of yours some more delicious Footy Park hot dogs , its big enough.
You will make a bigger impact upon Port's financial state doing that than your blame everyone else propaganda.

Nice work ignoring the rest of his post . Obviously you enjoy seeing the Power and Crows being shat on by the $ANFL as it means your Woodville West Torrens get access to better players - ones that fail in the AFL but play well in the $ANFL. If you wanted the best for football in this state, you would wish for independence for both our AFL clubs and for the $ANFL to invest more into upcoming talent and for this talent to feature in the SANFL rather than just consist of has beens or players that are not good enough for the AFL.

SA footy is backwards and more people need to know just how bizarre, illogical and above all DETRIMENTAL the SANFL operations are !!!

it isn't just footy for some reason.. the enthusiasm for the 36ers and the redbacks and adelaide united 'feels' like nothing because it is not there. I don't know or care about how they work behind the scenes though. probably the crows colors..

i havent read much else of the thread but this is exactly what im talking about. if you think me going to a port game and buying 6 beers 10 hotdogs and 20 packs of chips gives some fat dough to my club PAFC think again. it doesn't work like that at all in reality and that is why we are in the situation we face

how about this one : "Don't go making long posts about stuff you don't understand".....

Just as he ignored commentating on your declining attendances.

Well I do agree on one matter, that the two AFL licences should go back to Adelaide and Port... at market prices. Then they can do as they wish for better or for worse.

Sanfl clubs do invest in junior talent , unfortunately the majority of people think that if juniors don't make AFL then there is no success to the programme. Again you only see one successful outcome from junior development , where as I see the kids getting apprenticeships and careers through the club via sponsors or members. Or kids getting assistance with education. Or general mentoring.

Yes we do do recruit from outside of our zones as this helps winning premierships no doubt about it, If you want to win premierships you need to replace players that have made it to the AFL, that is by recruiting as well as bringing through the juniors.

Just on SA juniors, the biggest difference between the SANFL and WAFL is the size of quality juniors that both clubs develop. Go look through the top SA players in any draft in the past ten years and look for a KPP or ruck - good luck. By contrast WA teams are full of big players, and I've no doubt considerable effort is put into recruiting them and getting them up to speed.

The focus of SANFL teams is primarily on producing players that will play at SANFL level, not producing the best possible players regardless. Because of their secured, reliable income from the AFL clubs (via the SANFL), the potential transfer fees earned by having draftees reach milestones at AFL level are just not particularly necessary - its not enough of the club's total income to be very important.

SA football management stinks on every level right now.

Yeah, I wonder where the profits from that hotdog will go

My own view is that the AFL are using the two SA teams, Port to a greater extent that than the Crows, as pawns in an attempt to kill off the SNAFL's control of AFL footy clubs in SA.

There's a lot of truth here

Check facts before you comment.

The WWTFC is the most effective club in producing talent for the AFL (article on AFL website) so that counters your argument and still being successful at a local level - 8 grand finals and 3 flags in 21 years - not bad.

Yes the SANFL has too much control but the change to AO will see more money back at both clubs.

This is an unavoidable by product of having a good system/team/club. But is Nathan Bassett's prime role to win Norwood the flag or produce AFL talent? I have no problem with SANFL clubs doing what is in their best interests and I also think their should be far more financial compo for producing AFL talent, but it is the SANFL clubs own best interests that come at the expense of the 2 licences they profit from. This is where the conflict lies.

At the eagles (wwtfc) they would promote juniors in the attempt to et them drafted. They picked junior coaches on their ability to foster talent and their track record.

Here is some advice in return.
If you want to pretend you are rich and powerful, go and make some money for yourself rather than steal it from your next door neighbours at every opportunity.

The SANFL is slowly but surely killing South Australian football.

Their charter is to have the 2nd best competition in the land. This is to the detriment of both AFL clubs and junior football in the state.

The SANFL clubs spend all of their money recruiting blokes who aren't quite good enough for AFL but who can dominate at SANFL level. Look at the most dominant SANFL club Central Districts. Centrals have played off in 10 consecutive Grand Finals but in that time have barely produced an AFL recruit. Therein lies the problem...

Oh - and both clubs are broke because the SANFL rapes us our way through the AAMI Stadium gates and gives us one on the way out as well.

100% agree. in a couple of years more crows fans will come to see this. presently, they are too satisfied at ports situation that they don't see that we're heading down a similar path. even an improved stadium deal won't result in either sa club being able to spend up like the financial powerhouses do. in a 2 team town they should. but the license owners are more concerned with the "2nd best comp in the country". so the afl clubs are r*ped to achieve that end. glorious.

Yep - your mob should be making the equivalent of the WCE and at the very least Freo and be in the top 6 richest clubs - but the current model leaves you well behind them.
