Spring Carnival 2011

is the lack of interest in Jimmy Choux here just because he is out of sight, out of mind.

He has done everything right. He has one Group ones at the distance recently. He has formline through King Muthasa.

I have backed Helmut every start this Spring Carnival. I have been going to and following the Cox Plate for 30 years. I have seen boom 3 year olds go in as rage favs many times. Manawanui was closing on Helmut last start strongly. Helmut won't win the Cox Plate.

This is a very weak Cox Plate field this year.

For what it's worth my money is on Jimmy Choux at money back each way odds and Secret Admirer at a ridiculous $15 e/w overs.

Good Luck to you all but please tell me why Jimmy Choux won't win this!

I'm not going to argue with you, I said in the October punt thread that I think Mufhasa's win franks Jimmy. I like Rekindled Interest at better odds, will be taking a quinella with those two.

Surely Helmet's run the other week knocked the stuffing out of him?

A wise head once told me that the mile winners should start 15/1 in the Cox Plate - so I think Secret Admirer is the right place.

Early thoughts for me are that it will take something pretty good to beat both Helmet and Jimmy Choux - but that isn't adding much value.

Connections don't get to choose their barrier?

I was going to pick him up on this too, however he could mean choose the number out of the draw. Not necessarily the number itself.

Jimmy Choux for mine. Hopefully drift out to a nicer quote on race day :)

Rekindled Interest barrier 3, yes please :thumbsu:

I went to trackwork and the barrier draw this morning at the Valley. I never knew it was done like this for the Cox (not sure if it is new or what), but the saddle cloth number from Saturday's race-card was drawn out of a barrel/hat/whatever, and then then a person from the connections chose their barriers. So basically the barrier draw (the luck) part was from where you're saddle cloth was drawn.

Is this normal for the Cox Plate or any group 1 here in Australia?

Secret Admirer was first drawn and chose 8. The next 7 drawn then proceeded to take the inside 7 and then the rest from 9-16 (inc. emgs) were filled in order.

Grahame Begg said on stage that they wanted anywhere from 8-11 for their mare and were rapt when their cloth was drawn first.

Barrier 12 has never had a Cox Plate winner jump out of it.

no love for Descarado? Looked awesome last start

Has swelling in the hind leg and missed trackwork this morning. Gai still "98% confident" that she'll run tht horse.

Manawanui looked great after that big slug with Helmet, so I dont think Helmet would be much different.

With acceptances, Yosei paid the final $33k fee after his trainer ummed & ahhed whether he'd run the horse after a poor showing this morning. 30mins later the committee pulled the pin and made it and emergency after not showing enough form over +1600m. Do they get this coin back or is that a part of racing?

Forgive Lion Tamer's last run.

Prior to that put Southern Speed away comfortably, belted Rekindled Interest the year before in the Derby.

Looks the value of the race for mine.

I still believe RI would have had LT's measure in the Derby if it wasn't for heavens opening up that weekend, might have something to do with me having RI going for a little fortune though. Guess Saturday's race will settle it.

Sticking with Helmet but the barrier draw didn't do him any favors.

I tend to agree the weather may well have cost RI in the Derby and I'd been on RI the whole spring so I'm a bit the same as you and my heart says RI but my head LT.

I'm not off the RI bandwagon at all I think I've just come to realise how good LT is when switched on even though I didn't want to believe it could possibly be that much a better horse that RI.

Can't wait for the race. Plenty of chances for mine. Lots of double figure value.

thanks I thought it was done like this.

Rain and thunderstorms predicted starting friday arvo until Sat night in Melb, depending on how much rain it would surely favour the 2 quality kiwi horses...

He won the Derby by 6 and arguably has a better open class record than RI this spring. Think you guys might be clutching at straws a little.

Rekindled Interest is better suited over the 2000m compared to the 2500m.

Why people are pointing to Derby form when discussing a Cox Plate I have no idea, the two are so much different it's not funny.

Rekindled Interest is also a proven Valley performer.

El Segundo always ran well in Cox Plates, and won one too.

No one here is potting Lion Tamer mate, but RI is five times more adept in the dry going than he is in the wet.

Rekindled Interest was just fantastic today. Been backed heavily all day. $11's into $8.5.

Nothing much else to add out of today other than that.

Helmet in 11 not ideal.

Expect plenty of early pace now. Helmet has to get the rails to be a chance imo so will come out like he did in the guineas so he can settle 1st or 2nd

He was 13's this morning on TAB, I took at little bit more after the draw, and he started dropping at 10am when the outlets opened.

Got to love smart phones and betting at work. :thumbsu:
