St Kilda President Andrew Bassat tees off on the AFL draft system, specifically father/son and the Northern Academies

I don't get it. What does this mean.
Letting St Kilda know that the two blokes who have invoked their free agency rights to leave the club, were still invited and welcomed at the GWS B&F.

Whereas Battle wasn't.

Brisbane the premiers are about to get the best player in the draft basically free.

Port, Richmond, Melbourne, St Kilda and Freo are the only clubs that do not have advantages in the AFL.

How would y'all make the AFL as a competition fair?

I don't really agree with him re FS, but I do like to seeing a club leader voicing their authentic views - I wish more would do it.

A couple of real rocket scientists in here.

Amazingly, some of you still haven't bothered to watch the full speech. You know that Bassat admits our lack of success is our own fault right? Or is this minimal level of nuance too difficult for you to understand?

Then there's those who support clubs who have benefitted most from the current system. A bit of self awareness wouldn't go astray. It is amateurish that the premiers will get the best player in the draft for essentially free. There is no argument against this.

Then there's those who would actually benefit from a system change (like Richmond who are going to miss out on the best player in the draft), who are piling on because hur dur st kilda bad hahahaha. Talk about mob mentality.

Maybe the smartest bloke in here though is the one day old Brisbane Lions account claiming that the Brisbane Lions were never Fitzroy. Either a wonderful troll or the next NASA physicist.

Time to use some critical thinking. I know it's been a while for most of you. But if you want a fair competition then the fully compromised draft is the first thing that needs to change.
Actually there is “an argument against it”: it’s fan service.

That’s the reason, and the argument. It’s rewarding for older fans, who grew up watching the likes of Peter Daicos or Luke Darcy, and more love following their kids in the same jumper.

Is it strictly “fair”? No, it’s luck of the draw. Do we care? Mostly, also no.

Fine, pay up then. Best of both worlds.

Are the academies forcing you to offer a 12 gamer from GWS $800k over 6 years? Are the academies in the room right now?

Hey guys all we need to do to make the draft fair is get rid of academies and father son. Don’t worry that the vast majority of the draft talent comes from the VFL and every season non-VFL teams have to skip over players who refuse to be drafted out of Victoria. Look over here, academies.

Red herring. If we get Aleer and it works out, it's a good move. If it doesn't, we've ****ed it again. Not relevant at all to this conversation really. Onto the actual topic:

The academies as they are have served their purpose and are outdated now. Swans have been in 5 Grand Finals. Giants are consistently good. Lions are premiers. Suns have been given enough talent to figure it out.

Not everything has to be black and white. It doesn't need to be one extreme or the other. Maybe the AFL should run the northern academies. Keep building talent in rugby states, it's good for the game. When they get drafted to Vic, or WA, or wherever, if they want to go home after their first contract, good for them. Northern clubs pay up and get their man. Everyone's happy.

Or, if you want to draft the kid so badly, you can match the bid. At a fair price, because clearly he's a good player. Northern clubs pay up and get their man. Everyone's happy.

I don't understand why there are so many Lions fans in here. Go and enjoy your flag.

The academies purpose isn’t to get teams into grand finals. Stop gulping down your presidents vfl rhetoric. So they haven’t served their purpose, to the dismay of VFL fans they’re just getting started.

The AFL previously ran academies and it was a disaster and failed. Hence the current system.

Everyone is happy to pay a reasonable price for talent.

It is actually becoming a problem for us now. Pick 1 mid in 2022, pick 1 mid this year, another first rounder mid this year and then another top rated first rounder mid next year. We need it to produce some more talls. So it’s really not a fair system at the moment because we are only getting top rated mids.

You are having a laugh now right?

Otherwise you have just perfectly detailed how the current system is broken. In what world is any of what you've just said fair? The entire point of a draft is equalisation. Like, the only reason it exists. Otherwise we'd let it rip EPL style and Carlton, Collingwood and WCE would rotate the premiership between them. You must be able to see how what you've just said completely goes against equalisation.

The worst teams get the best draft picks. Draft picks can be traded for other draft picks and players as all parties see fit. So here's an idea: maybe if you don't have the draft capital/can't fit into your team/can't afford the best young talent... you shouldn't get it?

"A problem for us". Amazing.

It's a massive boon because it means you don't have to burn any future draft or trade capital on midfielders. Not fair? Oh come on.

You could easily trade your way out of next draft or two now to target someone like a King brother if you had to, without really hurting your club.

We can’t have a team full of first round mids from our academy and father son. We need some first round talls as well. Otherwise it’s just not fair.

You’d be complaining as well if you were only getting pick 1 mids for a packet of chips when at the top of a ladder and ZERO talls. It’s at crisis levels at the Lions but gets no media attention.

Yeah nice. By giving up and trolling you're admitting I'm right so cheers for that :thumbsu:

I’m surprised after your post about how dumb everyone else is in this thread that it went over your big brain head.

Matt Leblanc Whatever GIF

It is funny though that you can sit here defending your indefensible position right up until you decide to play into it instead. So you've just wasted your time and completely admitted you're wrong. Anyway, as I said before, enjoy your flag. God knows I'd never log on to Bigfooty again if we won one.

Yeah I played down to your level and got got. Ah well

Maybe you should stick to the society, religion and politics board where all the great intellectuals of Bigfooty reside

And remember the Saints were into Ben King after the Gold Coast drafted him.

"See you in 2 years Ben, come play with your brother"

And people wonder why Gold Coast are investing heavily in their academy.
funnily enough, the AFL stepped in and Gave Ben a shit load of ambassadorial cash to keep him there, where were they when the Pies raided GWS for years?
I suspect you don't actually don't want to see merit and just pot shot St Kilda and keep your advantages, which is quite typical for those with advantages

Of course they are. But you either like the rule or you don’t.

I’ve always liked the rule despite my team not being advantaged until very recently and losing a GF to a team of high F/S picks.

The comments about the academies are ludicrous. We are assisting the competition as much as VFL club supporters want to chug their own clubs’ VFL rhetoric.
One can like the rule but also see it for the advantage it is
rules can be changed
access can be altered, but because most want it, access is given
so
cost should be altered! discount - price, they can be changed to ensure the draft returns to the balancing mechanism is what it was meant to be.

No one is arguing that a fair price shouldn’t be charged, we all agree on that. No one is arguing that teams may receive a benefit from the rule sometimes, the rule is only to the disadvantage of GWS and GCS. All the other clubs have the same access.

But old Fred Bassat appears to want to abolish it all, hence his ‘progress’ comment.

you have completely missed the point ANDREW was making. the rules have been changed, ANDREW was potting the AFL because they made the decision to DELAY the introduction until next year, hence handing Brisbane the #1 pick in Ashcroft + Marshall for a pkt of chips, GCS another top 10 pick, Ess and Carlton F/S's.

they delayed the points increase
they delayed the inability to use more draft picks than list spots available
so now we have another 3 top 15 and 3 top 30ish players going cheap and uncontested
