Geelong rorting the system

He was a cat. Stevens was just very unlucky, normally when you take illicit drugs you don't get stabbed, you just collapse & get taken to hospital.
He was never a ‘Cat’. He didn’t immerse himself in the club and was nothing but a list clogger. A terrible decision to recruit him

You are aware that it wasn't deemed worthy of being pursued by Vic Police?

“The police investigation stemming from a 30-year-old Lorne man presenting at a Melbourne hospital with a non-life-threatening injury on 17 May, 2020, has been concluded,” a Victoria Police spokesperson told AAP.

“No charges have been laid in relation to the matter."
Yeah I am. They couldn’t lay charges because he refused to tell them who stabbed him.

Bit suss eh.

Only if you want to spin it that way.

Bloke punches you in the pub doesn't mean you are compelled to say who did it, talk to the police or take action on the individual. But AFL players are expected to not only be treated to a different standard but behave differently from the general public.

He had never even played a game for Geelong when this happened, by the way, and it happened in Melbourne where he was living so I’m not quite sure how much responsibility the Cats can take for his ‘descent’ into what had happened by then.

Same with Ablett Senior. I assume Slime Roy was alluding to Alicia Horan’s death which occurred 5 years after Ablett had retired.

Do we blame Essendon FC for what Olarenshaw was allegedly up to in Bali, and do we blame StKilda FC for what Sam Fisher’s drug dealing in 2022?

I did see fans of a certain club actually link the word ‘culture’ to Olarenshaw’s situation and have a giggle to myself at the stupidity of such a suggestion

"Louie handed the Cats that title through their ‘pretty boy’ ways. Think a young Sam Newman, the handball-style that would see them now as revolutionaries or not implementing a game plan through fear of being physically hurt by other men"

Sam Newman rarely avoided physicality. In fact, there's a game early on in his career when St Kilda's Carl Ditterich tried his best to bully to him into submission only to come to the realization Sam was a bit of a narcissist and ended up turning the tables on big Carl who was often beaten mentally when it came to the physical side of their one-on-one duels.

Sam Newman is a bit underrated due to his celebrity profile and television work. In his day, was one of the best ruckman of his generation. One of only a few who would be perfect in today's era as he could play multiple positions and ran all day.

My dad was pretty good mates with Doug Wade. He said Newman was the bravest player he ever knew, to come back from that kidney injury and still play for another 13 seasons. In that era especially.

There is a part of me, though I don’t really buy into any of the macho crap that goes on in the game at times and use of terms like handbaggers etc is an example of that, that wishes that maybe one of our flags - or a future one - was built on physicality rather than just being a skill-based team.

We had plenty of tough nuts don’t get me wrong and we were a team that I don’t think could ever ‘be bullied’ as such - we were tough enough to cope with it, we had our handful of hard nuts to cop it and in a few cases give it back, and eventually we would back ourselves to try and win based on game plan and skill.

But I don’t think we were ever ‘the bullies’ as it were.

There are times when we maybe aren’t playing our best footy or there have been finals series where I haven’t felt like we’ve been the best team in it but I’ve just thought ‘why not just have a go at trying to go out and just bust them up.’

Equally though I know you don’t just assemble 22 guys that can do that overnight and sides like Brisbane and Hawthorn got to that point over a long period of time

We were for a while in 2008-2009. I remember a game against Carlton in 2008 when Tim Lane was sooking openly during the broadcast about a few tackles and slams Geelong players handed out. From memory a very young Shane Edwards got smashed by us around the same time too.

Of course, it wasn't mentioned that players like Joel Corey and Darren Milburn got busted collarbones against Brisbane earlier in their careers in the same way. Not entirely sure they would've felt too bad about being able to dish some out.

He still was though. He got shoved into the senior team - unfit and overweight - and put in the worst debut of a name player I have ever seen. Still managed to get rewarded with another 8 games after that one.

All footy clubs do absolutely everything far better than they used to. But it just shows they're still capable of monumental stuff ups. Recruiting that overweight and washed up potato was one of ours. And it was defended the entire time he was there.

We won 7 of the 9 games he played, his numbers in the other 8 games he played weren’t abysmal, it was a gamble that didn’t work, it didnt cost much (pick 58 and probably the best pick from there or later at that draft was Michael Frederick. Big deal), who cares.
