Never mind the draft pick, McEvoy+Maister/Stanley is actually a better duo than McEvoy+Hickey atm.

You should've had a backup ruckman in 2012. That was another piece of inexplicable list management. Trading out of the first round wasn't the right way to rectify that issue IMO.
Your very for the now. Considering we are not pushing for a flag any time soon your proposition on getting someone like Stephenson or a mature ruckman is inexplicable. How many 22yr old ruckman dominate ruck/forward. NicNat and maybe Ryder at a stretch. Way to early to call.

I shall revisit this post when your now veterans retire.
This is going to get messy for St Kilda.
Remember Loewe, Harvey, Burke, Hamill, all these guys helped our young kids Roo, Montagna, Dal, BJ, Fish, Ball to shape them into better footballers.
Your way of thinking resembles Melbourne by pushing the older guys along. I don't want a 10-15 year rebuild.

I liked the Hickey trade at the time.

I didn't like the Lee trade. Thought he was going to struggle with the step up, or at least take quite a few years, which was a bit of a risk, I'm wary of downgrading any first round pick for a guy that's been discarded by another club, regardless of how great he has come back the following year(s)

Should of just been a straight second rounder and retained 13.

Hickey + Lonergan + Wright/White would of been a better outcome imo.

Lonergan is the sort of kid they could of built their midfield around, along Armitage really would of enabled them to start building from the inside out, and with Steven already there, they would of probably only required an investment of maybe 2 more low picks in the coming years through the midfield to have a really promising group. They are probably going to have to invest in a midfielder this year, but then again do they go tall again?

If they go tall again this year, it's been a pretty poor strategy, they would of been better doing it the other way around, and it means top end investment in a real problem area is still 2 drafts away.

StKilda will get Mitch Brown for free in the pre season draft this season. They also have plenty of salary cap space to go after a uncontracted player. Seems to be very good strategy getting Hickey and Lee while still have use of two early picks in 24/25.

Except you are heading for a Melbourne like midfield when Hayes retires and as Dal Santo and Montagna slow down as you downgraded the picks you need to get good midfielders at. You won't be getting Brown for free either.

You won't get Brown. All he wanted was game time. He's getting quite a bit this year and will get even more next year.

Brown will walk staright into the pre season draft. The mid field will be fine Ross, Armitage, Steven, Wright, Webster all look like players.

If he does he is going straight to Melbourne :D

As for the topic of this thread, Lee looks like a complete waste for a traded 1st round pick. Has he even played this year? I can't remember seeing him.

Interesting article on the AFL site now about the strike rate of success that first-rounders have at their second club, which is abysmal. Without having gone through the stats, the strike rate for discarded second and third-rounders must be worse. That's what makes the acquisition of Lee - who is physically underdeveloped - so baffling, because for every Krakour, there are are dozens of Angwins.

Is Wellingham a waste also?

Only you could compare Lee and Wellingham

Where do you think Saints will finish this season? Because if he goes into the PSD (I don't think he will) Bulldogs and Melbourne will take him straight away.

The comparison between between Lee and Wellingham was as stupid to his appraisal of the Lee trade on the back of him not playing this year.

Melbourne wont take another bloke that doesnt want to be there and its amazing how blokes always end up where they want in the pre season draft no matter the ladder position.

But there's no way we would pass on Brown, unless you finished below us? He would be good for either team.

It would be a priority you would think.

Well if a proven AFL key forward is in the PSD, and Brown goes to the PSD, and we finish below the Saints, we'd probably go for the key forward.
If we finish below the Saints and there is no proven AFL key forwards in the PSD, and Brown is, we would undoubtedly take him.

Well it would be in the WB best interest to try and convince one to be there wouldnt it.

Do you think Brown will still want to go to St Kilda now that everyone can see how many spoons they are in for in coming years, maybe he was deluded like most saints fans after last year and thought they were actually ok, Glass coming to end he is better off staying.
