Trek's best time travel stories ranked. Some odd choices in there, but the top 3 is probably right, though I would have number 1 at 3 and find it hard to split the other two.

Trials and Tribble-ations probably should have made the list, I had a lot of fun with that ep.

Ok so...two years into Star Trek initial watch

Gone in this order

  • TNG
  • DS9
  • Voyager
  • Picard S1&2 , Saw S3 as it came out each week
  • TOS
  • TAS
  • TOS films
  • Enterprise
  • Kelvin movies (initially saw these when they came out but did a rewatch)

Now a season and a half into Discovery.

My GOAT personal franchise. I really cant believe as a sci fi nerd it took me this long to get into (spurred on by the Mrs) perhaps it was the amount of content that I never thought to get around to it. (As evidenced by taking almost 2 years to date)

And I've loved it all so far. So far it's all been core trek, albeit, with varying levels of quality.

Looking forward to SNW and the animated stuff as well.

EDIT: Just finished Season 3 of Discovery. I really liked the first 2 seasons and half of this one - but felt as soon as Georgiou left - show felt rushed and some of the flaws of Burnham became way too prominent. Then the last couple of episodes of Season 3 just felt like they were making Star Wars. Won't go into some of the plot inconsistencies but they weren't flash too. Some really good stuff in Discovery and liked that they changed things up a lot - but a lot of bad aspects that bring the show down unfortunately.

EDIT 2: Just finished Discovery Season 4. Show had a lot of promise, and I'm trying to like it, but it's become a massive slog now. It's a victim of its own creation - trying to be different at the start (thought the first couple of seasons were really enjoyable) but then trying to have an each way bet on nostalgia and its own thing.

While having a Burnham-esque show was risky and not necessarily a bad thing, constantly giving more attention to non start fleet characters on a regular basis at the expense of her was really poor writing. We never see Burnham face true adversity either, so it's really hard to get invested in her as a character. It's just assume time has made her a better leader. Especially coming from where she started in the pilot.

They leaned to much into the dramatic scenes that without solid writing made it come off as CW-esque at times. Really prevalent in season 4.

It's not perfect, and it's not the only Trek show to have flaws, but this deviated too far from Trek by the 4th season IMO, I can understand why it was cancelled. I can see that there is some commentary that season 5 returns to that, so hope it's the case.

Still looking forward to Starfleet Academy though.

My Paramount subscription is up for renewal and I was thinking of canning it, maybe going back if they offer a deal. But with this in January and a new Dexter series late this year and next year, they may just hold me to it. Plus Strange New Worlds next year as well.

Starfleet Academy renewed for a second season before a premiere date for the first season has even been announced.

Nice.

Considering the talent involved, not surprising. Really looking forward to it.

Not a massive Star Trek fan, dabbled here and there. Watched a good chunk of next gen (when it first came out), discovery, new worlds and enjoyed the movies with Chris Pine the most.

Watching Star Trek Voyager for the first time. Is it just me or does Neelix come close to ruining the whole series? Just an annoying character with too much screen time. Him batting way out of his league is double annoying.

Hanging out for 7 of 9 to make an appearance and save this show for me. Hoping she shakes things up a bit.

Or might give deep space 9 a run instead, apparently it’s highly regarded?

Oh, and enjoyed Pichard too.

I dropped out of Voyager somewhere around season two or three. I wanted to enjoy it but the characters just didn't capture me in the way DS9 did. There was the potential there with the divided crew, but they abandoned that pretty early and just went back to the standard Starfleet crew. DS9 is the absolute gold standard for Trek.

You gave it 2-3 seasons? I came to the conclusion that the only likeable character was the (holographic) Doctor, and pulled the plug half-way through the 1st season.

DS9 is excellent, but I think the gold standard these days is Strange New Worlds.

If I had to guess, it was halfway through season 2, It used to be on late at night when I was a uni student, so I would watch it out of habit. I had hopes for Paris' character and didn't mind Kim, but it became clear nothing much of interest was going to happen. I bailed out of Enterprise after a handful of episodes. It is possible I was just kinda over Trek at that point in time.

As for SNW, it has a few years to play out yet, but it's slick and entertaining without being substantive. Its shorter seasons means it has fewer 'bad' episodes than earlier seasons. But it's still well behind DS9 and TNG for mine.

9. Enterprise
8. Prodigy
7. Discovery
6. Voyager
5. Lower Decks
4. Strange New Worlds

If we're being honest, then TOS is way too high, Voyager too high as well. The final series of Picard was great, but the earlier series arguably earned it the #11 ranking, and fairly so. Prodigy is mediocre, which still makes it better than Discovery and Voyager.

I haven't seen all of Voyager, and I haven't seen the Animated Series, but I've seen the rest of them.

I'd be more than happy with a top-4 of DS9, TNG, SNW and LD - in pretty much any order.

TOS is obviously dated and has a higher number of poor episodes because of budgets and constantly being on the verge of cancellation. But it’s groundbreaking, set the stage for what came after and has some genuinely great episodes that tackled some of the biggest issues of our times.

Taking out the animated shows as I didn’t watch them, I’d probably go DS9, TNG, TOS, SNW, DISCO, PIC, VOY, ENT. I didn’t see all of of Voyager or Enterprise, but the fact I tapped out suggests that just weren’t good enough to hold my interest (and I gave Enterprise a second crack).

I didn't mind Neelix, don't mind a bit of comedic relief in those shows.

DS9 is very good though.
If neelix is the comedy relief then the show is in trouble… which I’m starting to realise. Really lacks characters to get invested in. The only interesting one is the doctor.

Section 31. Yeah, not great. Not much better than the trailer.

Doesn't feel like a connection to main Trek timeline or even Discovery with Phillipa.

Not sure why it exists as I'm not sure who they made this for.

If you watch it as a standalone sci fi movie, it probably just crosses the threshold as a 5/10 90 min time killer.
