My opinion is we should draft another ruckman whether that be rookie listing (my preferred option) or in the draft.

Agreed, surely theres a undiscovered project player out there who we can rookie list. You know the one who has just moved here from England/Ethiopia/Ukraine who is converted from Basketball/Rugby Union/Bass Fishing and who went down to training and was spotted by Mark Browning/Clark Keating/danielcanberra and who has excellent beep test/jumping ability/tiddlywinks skills.

Wouldn't think so, based on what I saw. Always seems shorter than what he is and the skills aren't there consistently yet.

I'd think the club would see Clark as a viable back-up ruck, providing he's fit of course. Worse case scenario would see guys like Brennan or Mills used in that role.

Thanks the info there. Tippett was taken as a project player, and remember that another in Daniel Merrett has only consistently played at AFL standard in his 5th year on an AFL list.

Yeah I'm ok with the idea of taking another ruckman with pick 52, 55 or as rookie. There seems to be good depth in ruckmen in this draft, with quite a few Qld prospects as well. Will depend on who slides down on Draft day.

More about Spencer? Height/weight? Skills?

I played with Jake Spencer in club and rep footy for two years, a huge bloke (205cm), good skills and rather agile. However from personally knowing him i don't think we wants to be rookie listed to the lions. I think he wants to go somewhere else for a new sort of start. But not certain?

Jake Spencer Redlands
DOB: 9/10/89 Ht: 203 Wt: 93
Junior Position: Ruck
AFL Position: Ruck
Spencer originally from Townsville before moving to Brisbane has been a big developer this year. Possibly the best of the Queensland rucks at the championships he has continued to improve subsequently and was very good for Redlands in the AFLQ at the end of the year. He is a palm ruck who can ruck with either hand and who often gives his on-ballers first use of the ball in good position. He is a legitimate 203 and he uses his height well. At the moment he is pretty lightly built despite coming in at 93kgs and can get bumped around by more physical rucks. He moves pretty well for a big man and seems to have reasonable endurance. He certainly works hard on the ground and is not afraid to get in and mix it up Jamie Charman like. He is unlikely to ever be a high possession type ruck but he could win a lot of ball and provide good service allowing his team first use of the ball. He is pretty new to the game and there is plenty of potential for him to improve a great deal. He can kick off either foot and his skills have improved a lot over recent times.
Strengths: Good height and hard at it attitude. Has improved a great deal this year and is still a lot of potential for improvement in him.
Weaknesses: Not really a factor around the ground.
Draft prediction: A rookie selection is probably most likely given the depth in this year’s draft.

Fairley - I've liked the look of Spencer when I have seen him. I am a bit disappointed he would prefer to go elsewhere. If the kid wants to go elsewhere then you have to think that Hill or Smouha might be chances. Both are bottom aged which adds to their appeal.

Given that we seem to take a lot of AIS/AFL Academy players, I thought to have a look these guys and figure out which ones might be on our radar.

Out of 30 AIS/AFL Scholarship holders for 2006/2007, 19 are eligible to be drafted by my calculations:

Trent Cotchin, Patrick Dangerfield, Joseph Daye, Brad Ebert, Steven Gaertner, Jack Grimes, Lachlan Henderson, Addam Maric, Tom McNamara, Cale Morton, Marlon Motlop, Tony Notte, Sam Reid, Dylan Ross, Luke Stanton, Patrick Vezspremi, Dale Walker, Brendan Whitecross, James Wundke.

Remember too that there are 12 players from the 2005/2006 list that didn't get drafted / weren't able to be drafted:

Tom Bellchambers, Craig Bird, Tom Collier, Jarrad Grant, Matthew Kreuzer, Chris Masten, Ben McEvoy, Zac Millar, Tim McIntyre, David Myers, Ryan Normington, Cyril Rioli.

Any thoughts?

Looks like there's a few we might be interested and may be around some of our picks: Ebert, Myers, Grimes, Collier, Rioli, Veszpremi, then later on Reid, Whitecross, Daye etc.

i have been reading a bit about jack grimes lately and he sounds like the type of player brisbane need and should be available at pick 8

maybe our draft expert quigley could tell us if it is true that he is the type of player brisbane need

Ebert will give us 2 years, play like 10 games, and then demand a trade back to SA... i don't like the idea.

Why bother drafting anyone outside of Queensland then?

If that was to come about, we'd actually have to agree to trade him. OK if one or both of the SA teams have a bad year, then the PSD is an option. But I think you have to back the club in to create an environment that the player wouldn't want to leave. Simon Black was a dead keen Eagles man. Headland was a different kettle of fish in that we had the first pick and were damned if we did and damned if we didn't. I guess it comes down a lot to the kid and his values but that should be the case with any draftee. If they're sound and he's available then we should pick him.

That said, Ive got a funny feeling we'll end up taking Chris Masten.

His BF bandwagon certainly seems to have lost a tiny bit steam. He was top 4 in every list a month ago, but has been drifting to around 6-7ish on lists of late.

For whatever that's worth (generally not much).

Yeah either way I dont think he's dropping to us. I havent seen him but he sounds ideal if he did drop, so Ebert or Masten for me. We'll be relying on a minor surprise or two ahead of us I think.

I know bugger all about the young kids coming through, but I gather from the consensus that we will take a midfielder, would that be a fair comment?

Last year the consensus certainly didn't have us taking a ruckman.
