Where do you have the Qld guys going TFB?

Whitecross and Reid I'd think would go 20-35, so if we want either we'd have to take them at 25 IMO.

Smouha is interesting - a lot like Hampson last year, he could go in the teens if a club has got some wontons (the Bulldogs at 19 wouldn't be out of the question), but also could go as late as fifth round. My guess is in the 40s. Clubs won't like the 196-ish centimetres, but will be attracted by the athleticism.

Mulligan & Daye, I'm not sold on at all but I'd be thinking 50+.

They're the only five I can see realistically going. Having said that, this is the type of draft that could see a shirtload of smokeys in the later rounds - because of the percieved weak nature of the draft clubs will have their own project players. The likes of Gibson, Zorco, Clarke, maybe Davis could all sneak in above 50 if a club was keen enough on them.

But as I've indicated, I don't know enought about the other kids in the draft to compare them to the admittedly small amount of times I've seen these kids. I got stuck at 30 in my phantom draft - it was all too hard! :)

Masten will go to WC with the 3rd pick, lock it in ;)

This is the key to the lions draft IMHO. Assuming we want Masten/Ebert if WC pick one of them at 3, it's a lot less likely they drop to us at 8. If somehow they don't then it would be highly likely that one of them does drop. Perhaps the key strategically to our draft is therefore West Coast?

What about Davis & Stewart, can they get a start somewhere?

Masten would be great and I would love to get him but I think it is unlikely.

Ebert would be the most likely to fall to us and would be a great fit for us. For me though I would love us to pick Rioli. Just a personal preference and admittedly there are others who fit our needs better but hey I think Rioli will turn out to be a special player.

yep, the more i read about Cyril, the more i cross my fingers that he ticks all the boxes for the Lions recruiting staff and that he winds up in Lions colors

i think what sold me was someone's description of his ability to fire out a long, accurate handball to a runner and it reminded me of some of my earliest and favourite football memories watching Cyril's uncle, Maurice Rioli, unleashing handball havoc for WA in the state-of-origin games and Richmond in the VFL (courtesy of ABC's The Winners on a Sunday night 6pm with Drew Morphett if I recall correctly)

as much as i loved watching Vossy's bullocking runs and long-range handpasses out of traffic, Maurice had a magical touch about him that made him appear to slide in slow motion through heavy traffic

maybe i'm just wearing rose-coloured glasses but Cyril has that something special then perhaps he is worth a punt - i guess it all depends on whether some of the teams above us go for talls, leaving midfielders like Ebert, Palmer or Masten in the picture

peace

Apparently we were 1 of only 2 clubs who didn't speak to Cyril.

I've got a funny feeling we had that a few years ago, where we didnt speak to someone and then drafted them. I seem to remember it was Cam Wood, but given how it worked out it was probably Spaanderman

I can see it being Cameron Wood, because we never expected him to fall to pick 18.

Ebert = Luke Hodge

Myers = Chad Cornes

I'd be happy with either.

Gee, I thought I was the king of BS.. (big statements... thank you ;))

If they were to be equal to it would make this draft pretty special BD, more like... could develop into similar types.

My preference list for pick 8...

1. Ebert: He just sounds a superb talent. Tall midfielders are going to be the future, and if he can work below his knees he will be so versatile playing inside mid, outside mid or forward.

2. Masten: Huge raps early on, could potentially be a slider... Sounds the goods but still would take Ebert.

3. Rioli: I was already excited about this kid before i heard he had a 35 m + handball. Need to be careful with this one. Aboriginal kids can be amazing (Burgyones) but need to be nurtured early (Hooper). If we drafted him i would think Chris Johnson would have a large part in him and Rhans development.

4. Myers: Sounds like he could be a player, with all the physical attributes.

Special mentions: Palmer, Cotchin (unrealistic), Grimes, Vezpa

I would be reluctant to select Rance, as i believe Patfull and Roe have improved dramatically. Plus if Mitch Clark doesnt learn to kick we could use him as a CHB.. :p

Sorry, thats completely the intent of my post.

Was talking about the style of player they are, wasn't making any comparisons in terms of overall quality. :)

I get the feeling the only certainties not to be there at our pick is Kreuzer, Cotchin and Morton. There seems to enough reasons for each of the other guys to possible slide a little.

I thought so... although looking back at Pick #8 over the last 10 years suggests you still may be closer than you think.

Code:
Year cms Player

2006 196 Reid Ben
2005 188 Oakley-Nicholls Jarrad
2004 200 Meesen John
2003 188 Clarke Raphael
2002 185 Brennan Luke
2001 186 Bartel James
2000 184 Motlop Daniel
1999 190 Corey Joel
1998 182 Bolton Jude
1997 193 Tarrant Chris

av height 189.2cms

Myers David 190.7
Ebert Brad 187
Rioli Cyril 177

If Rioli was the best available I would love to see that famous name on our list. Think he could be a good player long term.

Gubby Allan has confirmed that pick 8 will simply be best available.

That's either the case, or just called playing your cards very close to your chest. :p

Maybe we should bluff and say we'll be targetting a ruckman with pick 8. ;)

And source Grim? Would be interesting to read more comments if it were from an article.

No slider; he'll go to West Coast @ 3

Fair enough, but he seemed to be emphasising the point. The comment is consistent with the drafting strategy in previous years. There's been speculation that we will take best mid (or best key defender) but I think people should be prepared for any type of player.

It's on the lion's homepage.
