Roast Statement on Umpires

I use to watch a lot of rugby league but due to pathetic refereeing I've only watched about three home and away games in the past two years. IMO both codes and the TV channels should be extremely wary of this. Some of the decisions are just so wrong that the officials are either incompetent or cheating and if that's the case due to betting
then I pity the poor old supporter.

The umpires yes were inconsistent and baffling at times but that is reflective on all games in the AFL.

There is no corruption or any of that shit just inconsistent becuase umpires are not full time therefore they have less time to study and review their own games.

This thread is embarrassing tbh, Im prone to melt at the umpires every now and then but its not worth it. Shit happens move on.

I really dont give a shit. People on the main page will continue to shit on us regardless.

Meanwhile we are constantly on the receiving end of dodgy decisions and the overall free kick count pretty damning of that. I make no illusions that we would win any more matches when we still play quarters of shit football but we are not playing on a fair ground and its just not acceptable.

Thats where Finnis and the board comes in.

Use diplomacy and be very subtle about it.

Yes, thats what may or may not happen in real life. This is Bigfooty.. probably the furthest from real life you can get on the internet.

This thread is about one umpire over a number of games. Some of us through sharp observation over some time think he shows a particular, unusual bias against us. It is a pattern that when looking at this particular umpire is impossible to ignore. This isn't about us complaining about umpiring in general (that is pretty poor across the league but tends to even out). I fail to see how that is embarrassing to point out or why we should move on. There is something strange about how this umpire officiates against the Saints and it should be brought to the attention of the league or it will keep on happening.

Was genuinely baffled at a few decisions today, but I am most weeks when I watch. The McKenzie free against was ridiculous, and also the ruck contest frees I also didn't understand.

However, I Think some of the posts in this thread are a bit embarrassing to be honest.

We have a free kick differential of -4.5 per game, the worst in the league.

Really sorry to intrude. This was in the commentary from the afl website. Nothing to do with the thread or the umpiring today, only meant in relation to your statement.

In 2015 first seven rounds St Kilda had 134 free kicks for @19.1 per game and 162 free kicks against @ 23.1 per game.

So for some reason the author decided to use the free kicks against St Kilda (for which we are ranked first) as the measure against which they compared (an erroneously low) WCE free kicks for (stat) which I calculate to be 18.7 per game before the St Kilda match inflated it to 18.9. It seems that the author mistakenly used the free kicks against stat for WCE too. This stood at 14.3 per game before the St Kilda match data trimmed it back a little so it now stands at 14.0 per game.

I can confirm that Rahul's post is accurate and up to date (including Round 8 2015) we do have the worst free kick differential of the league @ -4.5 per game

None of this is relevant except in the part that Umpire Nick Foot contributed to that disparity.

Free kick differential means nothing without specific examples.

It is not supposed to be even.

Early on, We gave away a number of silly free kicks today because we were second to the ball. Once we lifted our effort, this started to even out.

I can think of a number of players who are over zealous when tackling, Newnes being one and this leads to more free kicks against.

It's the ones they miss which are more frustrating.

I think we have to remember how silly supporters of opposition clubs sound when they consistently complain about the umps after a loss.

Sure, sometimes it's warranted - and today I think we were pretty unlucky on a few occasions - but usually we're just being a little bit unfair. Fans of every club can pin point moments in a game to support their argument after a game.

Didn't get up to this part of the thread before posting.

These words match my thoughts.

People claiming corruption is head in hands stuff and I just hope you guys are going over the top to try and prove a point.

I honestly can't believe that some of you think that due to us receiving 4 less frees than the oppo a week that you feel the only explanation is that the 24 guys who've umpired our games are part of some elaborate corruption scheme.

There's a typo in that. That should say Free Kicks Against, not For.

Proof on the AFL's website http://www.afl.com.au/stats

I'm not sure we've received 23 frees in a game this year, let alone averaged it.

Id swear this bloke had a vendetta against us....
But as my brother said, although it seemed like we were getting screwed,
its more likely he was just incompetent at his job.
And due to the 'luck' of our beloved club,
We just copped the worst of it........... as usual.

I think we have to look at the common denominator here, though. What's more likely? The entire umpire organisation is against us or we are simply undisciplined?

I think what we need is more disclosure on the missed free / wrong free counts.

Couple of weeks ago, afl site had a video which said so.

So, the petition we would put in be really asking for disclosure of those stats for each game.

The high free kick against McKenzie was one of the worst calls I've seen... Not even slightly high, if anything it was perfect technique
Agreed, I reckon this and that deliberate call in the Essendon game are the worst I've seen.

Why not both? Or if you don't believe in their intentions are sinister, inept rather than biased.

Good starting point would be to finally professionalise the umpiring profession. The players are full-time with their side jobs and training schemes, yet those controlling the games are doing so as a side job.

The biggest thing they need to do is acknowledge that they make a mistake. Post a video of the good calls and bad calls. They should only be background noise. Other thing I hate is that relay with the ball after a goal. Completely useless, when one of the umps is 2m away from the ball but won't go and pick it up.

The start of likely corruption happened when the AFL cozied up to the gambling industry. They huge amounts of money bet on sport mean paying off umpires will only be a matter of when not if.

While corruption may one day be a concern, in this complaint I think we should concentrate on ensuring that the AFL umpiring body knows that we expect a higher quality product from Umpire #2 Nick Foot. Many observers of the game suspect that this particular performance was substandard and probably warrants investigation to confirm our suspicion and if so we should leave it up to them to administer possible remedial action.
