Stats questions

I'm sure you've all seen score timelines (aka the 'worm') on the AFL.com.au website (like the one below).
View attachment 1397638
Does anyone know (i) when these timelines started being used (ii) are the old ones still available and (iii) whether these timelines have been converted to some form of statistical table that can then be accessed? That combination of the team scores, margin and time for every point in a match then aggregated across all games could throw up some brilliant statistical information and help quantify concepts like 'the importance of momentum'. Love to find it if it exists!

What's an Adelaide supporter doing highlighting a Port Adelaide victory?

With the Leon Cameron sacking, does anyone keep stats on coach farewell games and for the week after when McVeigh becomes caretaker, new coach games?

TWO QUESTIONS.

When was the last year the 3 Teams with the Longest Premiership Droughts (currently St. Kilda, Fremantle & Carlton) were all in the Top 6 on the Ladder - as it is now and has been on multiple occasions this year?

(I believe it might be around 20 years ago?) (Sydney, Geelong, Western Bulldogs?)

When was the last time the 3 Teams with the Longest Premiership Droughts were all in the Top 6 Ladder this late into the season (or later)? (So Round 9 or later?)

Anyone know?

Ron the Bear was amazing and sadly missed.

One could ask the most obscure question - for example the player who played the most games without playing against a particular opposing club or the player who played least games but met all opposing teams in his career - and he would have an answer so quick. I don't know how he did it.

What happened to Ron? (Afraid to ask...)

Yes, I forgot they had that dashboard.

InsightLane (https://twitter.com/insightlane) has also posted some analysis on Twitter. E.g.:

A related question - what is the longest in-game goal stream a team has had and still lost the game?

I know teams have had 7 goal streaks and lost before - have any teams had an 8 goal+ streak and still lost?

Ron died sometime last year.

I don't remember what it was but he was 50 something at the time of his death. (Maybe 53?)

North Melbourne and West Coast have both lost their last 5 games by margins of 50 points or more.

North Melbourne has lost by 68, 60, 50, 78 and 69 points. West Coast has lost by 63, 84, 109, 75 and 74 points.

Both teams have now lost 6 games for the season by 50 points or more.

Looking back over the past 30 years, it seems that the 1996 Fitzroy side has had the most losses by 50 points or more - 16 out of 22 games.

For consecutive losses of 50 points or more, Fitzroy had 7 such losses between Rounds 13-19 in 1995, while GWS had 7 such losses between Rounds 7-14 in 2013 (with a bye in Round 13).

My questions are:

What is the most losses by 50 points or more in one season?
What is the most consecutive losses by 50 points or more?
Are there any other instances of two teams both losing by 50 points or more over 5 or more consecutive rounds?

What's an Adelaide supporter doing highlighting a Port Adelaide victory?

This would be like a Footscray fan highlighting a Norf victory.

Anyway.

Relevant question for this thread.

Does anyone have the order of who reached the 400 goal mark from first to the most recent in Tom Lynch and, before him, Jack Gunston? (E.g. maybe Gordon Coventry reached 400 league goals first.)

On the weekend Melbourne defeated West Coast by 74 points, mirroring their winning margin the last time they played at that ground in the 2021 grand final. How many other teams have won at the same ground by the same margin in consecutive games?

Oh that is very sad. :(

I do hope someone was given/has access to all the amazing stats he had.

Not just the access that would be nice.

The ability to maintain and update the database he built without stuffing up the coding.

Here are some links to the Marcellin Old Collegians Cricket Club, where Ron used to play, that might be of interest.

From all reports a top bloke - I wish I'd had the chance to meet him - because my first question would have been - what is your plan for passing on all the data you've accumulated on the Footy.

Probably should have just asked him. :(

Thanks for the response to my questions on 50+ point losses.

Wanted to check the accuracy of the 6 consecutive losses by Port Adelaide ending in Round 1 in 1997. That was Port's first ever AFL game, which it lost by 79 points. Two smaller losses of 33 and 39 points followed, and then Port had its first AFL win in the first ever Showdown.

Should Port Adelaide be on this list?

Wow, sorry about that and thanks for the fact check! No they definitely shouldn't and I have updated the original post.

Saw this come up on Facebook....the 1976 Elimination Final between the Bulldogs and Cats.

The Dogs had FIVE players named Ian in the side, being Ian Hampshire, Ian Morrison, Ian Salmon, Ian Dunstan and Ian Low.

I know St.Kilda have had a side full of Jacks recently and I'm guessing there'd have been many Johns and Peters in the past, but would this be the apogee of the name Ian amongst a squad of 20 players?

In that game there was a bit of a Cat flavour with the Dogs too, as Ian Hampshire transferred to the Dogs in '76, as did Ken Newland. Bill Goggin coached the Dogs that year and a future Cat Peter Featherby was also playing for Footscray.

Interesting in itself the one-year sojourn that Newland had with Footscray in '76, i wonder if he went along knowing former team-mate Goggin was coaching and Hampshire playing as well. There was a bit of these one-year things happening in the 70's....Phil Baker had a year at Geelong in '75, Newland '76, John Burns had a single season in '79 with the Cats. Last of these i recall was Trevor Spencer who joined Geelong midway through 1991 and played most of that year including the finals.

Hi All,
Just wondering if 2 players from the same club have ever won the Coleman medal in consecutive years?
Curnow making a good case for it so far.

Good question - think not. The closest I can think of is Franklin/Roughead were a couple of years apart, Matthews/Hudson a couple of years apart and Titus and Harris 2 or 3 years apart (not 100% sure).
(And if you want to be technical, only Buddy/Roughy qualify since there wasn't an Official Coleman medal until the 1980s or 90s).

Looks like it's never happened with the Coleman Medal. Though it has with the "Coleman Medal equivalent":

That list has an unfortunate error in claiming Dick Lee tied with Percy Martini on 51 (H&A) goals in 1910. Lee finished on 45 goals, leaving Martini the sole winner. That error was pointed out years ago, and has been corrected elsewhere, but shouldn't still be shown there!
