No goals were kicked in the final term yesterday at Adelaide Oval.

I know this has been visited in the past but I can't remember when. I'm pretty sure the late great RTB or Daicos35 had a list of goalless quarters and/or goalless final quarters.

Two games that I know that achieved this were:

1. Ted Whitten's famous 3/4 time speech in his 321st and final game? Round five against the Hawks in 1970 at a wet Western Oval.

"you've gotta show me all the guts and determination you've got in your body. You've got to inspire me with this last quarter effort."

"You've been in front all day and you've got to stay there..."

We were two points up at 3/4 time. There were zero goals and five behinds kicked in that final quarter. We won by three pts.

Talk about being in front and staying there and showing guts & determination.

2. Will Minson's first ever game keeps this topic going.

Bulldogs v Carlton in 2004.

28 goals were kicked until 3/4 time. No goals in the final term. Bizarrely the conditions were perfect. I doubt there has been a higher combined total despite zero goals kicked in the final term.

That was the 98th time both teams have been goalless in the final quarter. It's happened 6 times in the AFL era (1990>):

1994 Rd. 19:

The 2004 game (with 28 goals) does indeed have the highest aggregate goals tally for a game with 0 goals kicked in the final term. Next best is 23 goals: 1940 Rd 1 - Fitzroy 13.13 vs St Kilda 10.20.

In the Bulldogs West Coast game Bailey Williams kicked a goal in the second quarter on both teams. The Bulldogs version added a subsequent goal as well.

Has there previously been 2 players with the same name scoring goals for their respective teams like this?

Would someone be able to tell me what is the most games by a player in a completed VFL/AFL career who didn't play in consecutive games for his club?

By no means a definitive answer but at least a starting point for further research - Trevor Fletcher (Carlton) with 4 non-consecutive games;
Rnd 17, 19 and 22 in 1976 and Rnd 3 in 1977

In 2021 there were 7,903 Frees For and 7,895 Frees Against recorded, resulting in a discrepancy of 8 free kicks.

It's hard to imagine a free being awarded without it being against another player's offence, so how does this occur?

mm..not sure where you saw that...but at AFL Tables site the totals match

Interesting, the player stats don't seem to align: AFL Tables - Player Statistics - 2021
I think it may be that some 'free kicks against' are attributed to a team and not an individual player. As an example of where they differ, the free kicks for GWS v St K in round 1 2021 were 30 to 14 based on the AFL website team stats:

AFL - News, Fixtures, Scores & Results - AFL.com.au

Aggregating the free kick tallies for the individual players, the total free kicks for GWS was 30 but the total free kicks against St K was 29.

Footywire has some slight differences for some players compared to the AFL website, but the totals agree. Frees For 30 to 14, Frees Against 14 to 29!

I looked over the two players named Peter Welsh for Footscray and Hawthorn from the 1970s but there was no game involving the two where they both scored goals.

I want to ask this question because it must be a long time since this happened.

When is the last time at the half-way mark of the season (or later) by games played - the 3 Clubs with the Longest Premiership Droughts have all been in the Top 5 on the Ladder?

It certainly hasn't happened this century.

St. Kilda - 56 Years (4th)
Fremantle - 27+ Years (3rd)
Carlton - 27 Years (5th).

When did this last happen? Was anyone alive then still alive today?

By my calculations:

Round 12, 1998
Sydney - 65 years (4th)
Western Bulldogs - 44 years (1st)
Geelong - 35 years (5th)

Round 21, 1997
Sydney - 64 years (5th)
Western Bulldogs - 43 years (4th)
Geelong - 34 years (2nd)

Prior to that, 1916 when only four teams competed so that doesn't count! Prior to that, round 13 1907 when St Kilda, South Melbourne and Geelong (the three teams without a premiership) were 3rd, 4th and 5th (of eight teams).

Who has had the most career possessions without ever racking up 30 touches in a game?

I have a feeling the answer is going to be Jason Dunstall (with Mark Blicavs hot on his heels) but it would be interesting to know who else might have this dubious honour.

This year it is looming as a real possibility that the West Coast Eagles may go 1-21 in the AFL, and their WAFL team 0-18, which would make for one of the worst team performances in recent times.

It got me thinking about the long gone days of the 12 team VFL, where each club fielded a league, reserves and under 19's team, and seasons where all three teams did very well, seasons where all three teams did very badly or there was a lot of contrast at different levels.

For example in 1981, Melbourne's league team had an abysmal 1-21 season with lots of heavy defeats, but their Under 19s won the premiership. I'm not sure how the Melbourne Reserve Grade side went that year, if any Demons fans could fill me in that would be great.

As for really strong teams across the board, in 1950 Essendon won the League, Reserves and Under 19s premierships, meaning everyone at the Bombers was happy (apart perhaps from poor old Greg Tate). Richmond had all three teams in action on Grand Final day in 1973, and all three Tiger teams brought home nice shiny premiership cups to Punt Road. I don't think there were any other clubs to take the hat-trick,

At the other end of the scale, I remember hearing that Fitzroy had a terrible 1964 season across the board, their League and Reserves teams going winless and their Under 19s winning just 1 game. Does anyone know if the Lions were similarly poor in all three grades in 1963 and 1966, years in which the league team finished last 1-17?

I also believe South Melbourne finished last in all three grades in 1975, the seniors 2-20 and the under 19s 0-22, does anyone know how the reserves went, or if there are other teams where all three sides finished at or near the bottom of the ladder in the same season?

This has South Melbourne U19's finishing last with a 3-19 record.
