Played 5 minutes of brilliance in the third quarter, but played like a ******** for the rest of the game. Needs to pull his finger out and do the team things.

Ummmm, basically that run of three goals Geelong got in two minutes in the third term were all based on Johnson genius. Go back and watch the replay, everyone.

Seriously, he is a freak

I don't think his game was that bad due to being selfish (although there was a bit of that, but that's just the way he is allowed to play because he is a freak) ... His poor play was mainly due to abnormally poor skill execution.

He set up quite a few goals, and some of his misses were shots that normally were regulation sodas for SJ. The one really bad thing he did was launch that torp from 55m which sailed on the full, but he has a licence to try what he likes.

Sj owns 2 different medals that weeping Nick will NEVER own. a NORM SMITH for best player in a grand final and TWO premiership medallions. Typical game indeed.

What you need to ask yourself is.......

Who deserves those medals more? SJ or Nick?

Yes, feeling pretty embarrassed right now.

lol

You would be as happy as a pig in shit right now.

From the outside looking in, he looks like he is reaping the benefits of playing in a well oiled and well drilled machine at the moment.

If he fires the next two games, the Cats will win the Flag. If he plays like he did against the Hawks. You will get beat.

Wow some of the things being said in this thread are incredibly stupid. Stevey J was just down on confidence tonight and it reflected in front of goal. Apart from his kicking at goal it wasn't the worst game. Obviously the torp wasn't the best option and it was a poor mistake but its funny how much it changes if that went through. Seem to remember everyone calling Didak a genius when he belted through a torpedo from the other side of the MCG about two seasons ago. Will bounce back in the prelim, very sure of that!

Thought he crossed the line tonight.

The torpedo from 50m was self indulgent.

Needs to get a rocket that his contibution to the tremendous win was negligible

Geelong supporters : rule of thumb to maintain sanity - when it comes to Steve Johnson; just laugh no matter what..
I have seen him play way worse than he did tonight !!

a truly unique player.

Top 5-6 in the B&F this year for mine, and should be a lock for AA.

He who dares ....

I thought he did some exceptionally dumb things tonight

However, he also setup 2 goals and kicked another in 3 minutes to take the game away from Hawthorn.

I'd have him at Essendon if any Cats fans are offering?

this (partially).

Johnson certainly gets amongst it.
Not scared to look like a goose.

to those bagging out his torp effort in particular, consider; here is one of the few blokes in the league that genuinely struggles to go the distance from 40+ meters.

perhaps it's a legacy from that time he tried to evade bouncers at a pub by jumping a fence.
Regardless, it's his one definite weakness; he cannot drop-punt from 45+.

I was more shocked when he missed a set shot in a crucial game straight in front from about 40 meters out (although I recognised it was on the limit of his range).

He takes risks and looks like a goose nearly %50 of the time.
The other %50 of the time, Johnson is a match-winner, or at the least a potent attacking weapon.

Personally, it has taken me a loooong time, but I am willing to take the good with the bad as long as he isn't trying to milk free kicks - one thing I will say is that he is not afraid of the limelight, or to take a risk under the spotlight of a big game.
He makes defenders a bit nervous with his unpredictability, and I will be shocked if he doesn't earn another AA jumper this year.

Bottom line is you have to take the good with the bad with SJ.

I wouldn't mind him putting in an emphatic performance against quality opposition some time soon though.

He needs a kick up the arse, that's all. And he'll get it, no doubt. Not sure if they showed it on TV, but Ling absolutely tore strips off him for that torp. You take the good with the bad, but the bad was almost comical tonight. Having said that, the good moments were absolutely brilliant.

That bs doesn't work against good sides and in finals. Example: He gets a quick kick in and marks about 55m out, turns his back, waves everyone away, then shanks a torp out on the full. What sort of message does that send to the players on their hands and knees trying to win hard contests?

who does he think he is? daisy thomas or shooter didak? he couldnt take out their garbage at night...

Yep, for five minutes in the third he singlehandedly gave us the ascendancy with some brilliant work. Really, he should have ended up with four goals if not for some just plain silly efforts. And that torp, well, good on Lingy!

I don't think you could ever drop a Norm Smith medallist in a finals game. He was selfish tonight, but also had 5 minutes where he changed the game. Take the good with the bad.

Hard to believe some people are saying he should be ahead of Milne for an All Australian forward pocket position.

Apart from some big games against pretty poor opposition he hasn't really had a great year. No doubt he can be a matchwinner on his day but against good opposition he often struggles to have an impact or just lairises too much like he did tonight. Must be frustrating for Geelong supporters and his teammates to see him stuff around trying to kick goal of the year rather than play disciplined finals footy.

Definitely

very surprised he is in AA squad

Not his best season, and he's becoming a bit of a charicature of himself by trying to do the tricky thing every time. Needs to employ a few more 'first options' and execute them well

However, his last quarter.... it seemed to be important for the game just to keep Hawthorn on the ropes by taking shots and getting scores rather than trying to pinpoint passes into the 50 which they could have rebounded.

If Cats had lost I bet SJ would the number 1 topic on every cats fans list this morning. He did everything he possibly could to lose that match in the name of "look at me" despite these so called 3 minutes of brilliance calls.

johnson ****ing wishes he was half the player didak is

Wow. Just wow.

As for SJ - yeah you get some bad, but you get some good too. Chris Scott said it himself after last nights game.

Question though - 3rd quarter, game up for grabs. Cats kick 3 in 3 minutes to break it open. Who was the common factor in those goals?

Hmmm...

You would think you might be focussed on your own teams game today instead of being obsessed with SJ and the Cats. Good win by the Cats though wasnt it. :)

Are we talking about the same player? So much Steve Johnson hate!

I think he is a brilliant player and I love watching him play, he was selfish last night, big deal, I actually thought ignoring that period he was quite good. I dont know how people can claim he isn't a big game/pressure player.

When it comes to the crunch and Johnson kicks a freak goal from the boundary or hands out a lateral assist through traffic that nobody at the ground except him could foresee will people still be hating on him?

I think he makes the AFL far more exciting, at a time when there are so many boring robotic players. He is a genuinely naturally talented footballer, I'd take him any day over some of the athletes we have to watch who seemingly have no idea how to read the play.

Good game, bad 5 minutes when the game was basically won, great player.

If you think that he isn't a VITAL part of that Geelong side you are absolutely kidding yourself, he is a star.
