Best Carlton Captian, for sure. Don't know about overall, there have been many other great leaders of men.

Was captain for all bar his first season. Led by example. A man of men with a mullet to envy (well at least in the 80's) :p and a voice deeper than the dark navy blue he adorned during his illustrious career. I walked past him once and he is a lot bigger than he looked on the field, close to 200cm and very wide shoulders. I'd rather a captain of this vein than a midfield midgit. No disrespect to the Dominator whom Sticks took over the captaincy from, who was also a good captain.

To the person who brought up that rd2 out of bounds on the full against Essendon, fair call, that kick was a shocker. But that kick was nowhere near as important as the kick he had after the siren in rd 22 '87 which won the game against North and meant we finished on top (had he missed we would have finished 3rd) Finishing on top in that season, which was very even IIRC ensured we had the best possible chance to win the flag, which we did, in his first year as captain.

A player doesn't necessaraly have to play in the guts to be an influencial captain and inspire his team mates. Sticks wasn't a traditional CHF, played two positions really. In between FF/CHF and it was amazing how much the ball gravitated towards him when the blues went forward. I always felt confidant that he would take the grab or pack mark when the ball went into our forward line.

I and most Carlton supporters would know that he was a great player and captain, but am often surprised that he is remembered in such high regard by BFopposition supporters. Many who rated him in the top three of his era in another topic a while ago and ahead of another great forwards of his time.

Mucho respecto

greatest Aussie cricket captain Allan Border
just my opinion

Getting off the topic of footy but...............

Greatest Aussie Cricket Captain - 'Gilly' (Adam Gilchrist)!

Greatest AFL Captain(s)
Steve Kernahan
Michael Voss
Leigh Mathews
James Hird
(i'm going off Captains that i've seen!)

My old man was a huge Glenelg fan so we always used to watch carlton games if the swans weren't playing. I loved watching him play and I attempted to use his kicking style when playing footy myself. There's no doubt that Kernahan was a terrific player and captain, but guys like Kelly, Voss and Carey were marginally better captains IMHO.

Carlton had a magnificant team with most of the top players in the game from the late 80's early 90's (Diesel was the greatest player of the use of the handball I've ever seen) and I think Carlton really should have won more premierships than they did during the period.

Hands down the greatest in my opinion.

Long lost are the good old days of sticks dominating the whole game !

He is a Champion no doubt about it for Glenelg, South Australia and Carlton, he was my whole reason I started following footy when I was a kid, never forget the 1983 State Of Orgin match at Footy Park when he kicked 10 goals against the Vics ;)

Sticks was a great captain but Matthews, Carey, Hird and Voss would get the nod before him.
Really, care to say why? Kernahan was made Captain is only his second year and broke the record for most games as Captain. Two of the above may be better players but that doesn't make you a better captain.

Familiar with the name Carey ???

Hands down indeed. - no contest !

What's more he can construct sentences, unlike your nominee. :)
