Let him go, partying like a maniac with a few of the Newtown & Chilwell boys on Saturday night. Eyes like dinner plates. Who knows, maybe it will bring out cousins like form over the rest of the season.

I hope housey wasn't with him.

First hand. I know it's unfair to hold him to a higher standard than myself or others that were around, but Jesus I know twos players locally who stop drinking let alone other stuff 6 weeks before finals. Can't be that hard surely.
It's not unfair at all. It's only natural that an AFL footballer should be held to a higher standard due to the status that he holds.

People can think whatever they want but this is the reason for why the club couldn't care less about whether he leaves or not. He's not getting the most out of himself for this very reason and why I've thought that he's been gone as of next year for quite some time. He just doesn't have the dedication and the club knows it.

See ya Mots and good riddance.

Not really a great sign to my mind. The game today is not what it was in the 80's , and I doubt id be a choir boy either. Im not saying any player has to be a Craig Bradley or some other non drinker 52 weeks a year but he is a pro ..and in season temperance shouldn't be something thats too hard at his age 26.1/2 at min. Keep it under control ... .does any player really want to wake up one morning and find its done and he wasted it. Ask Fev about that.

I was a big Motlop fan initially but sadly, now I think now he is a liability. A lazy downhill skier. I am worried he will have a poor influence on the other indigenous boys as well. The finals will find him out once more and I will be disappointed if he is in the hoops in 2018.
Sorry Mots
hasta la vista baby.

Was a flashback seeing Gamble haha.

Lol he was a weird player threatened to be great but never was. Just so long as housey on the straight and narrow all good.

Disappointing news really...I know he's a young guy and we all partied in our 20's....but you would think three weeks before a final series his mind would be on the job...

...especially on well over half a mill a year

Not that surprising really... Some guys 'click' when faced with a crossroad - IF all the stories are true (where theres smoke theres fire) then seems like he has continued down the easy path. Time to move him on for the clubs sake - cannot be good having young players around seeing his approach to preparation. I'm sure he offers support and community integration however we are an AFL football club and therefore our first priority should be results on the field.

I get the angst. Its warranted.

But was he pissed as a newt or did he have 3-4 over the duration?

Players need to be accountable - no doubt - but having a few beers after a game wont kill and athlete. Im not saying im all for it, but to castigate him on this is too much for mine.

Now, if he's paralytic - all bets are off.

Go Catters

For a player that has a history of not showing up in shape IMO it's simply not good enough.. He is on a big amount of cash and should be leading by example. I wouldn't mind if he was performing on the field and his body was in great shape, the fact is he isn't.. Needs to get shown the door.

There was a period in the early 2000's where some of our future champions partied and drank too much, indifferent on field performances ensued. How many of them were shown the door?

We are worse off as a football club with Steven Motlop not in it. I do not want him traded or pushed out so he leaves of his volition.

I can accept young players going down the wrong path - Motlop no longer gets that excuse. He is a seasoned AFL player who knows right from wrong and what it should take to get the best out of himself. I'm not convinced we will be that worse off when you consider his current output and how much salary cap space he is taking up and the bad example he is setting to others. Hopefully we can get something in return.. It also seems like the club has given up on him turning things around which tells me a lot when you consider how lenient and forgiving we are. Chris Scott is scared to tell Motlop off or discipline him by putting him in the VFL because it might hurt his feelings.

I read it as he was on something other than booze....

I mentioned this after someone posted saying a few were out and hammered in Adelaide after the Crows loss and was swiftly told the equivalent of 'boys will be boys' and that as young men there is no harm in it...
To win a flag we need everything to go right, we need the players to buy into this and get off the pingers or stop drinking for a couple of months towards the end of the season, if they can't sacrifice that and still expect to win a flag... we have no chance.

And before anyone cracks the shits, yes it is all just talk and speculation... but my point is still spot on

I agree. But if it's cool with the club for some of the boys to get pissed eg Adelaide game which was a really bad loss. It's not really fair to hold Motlop to a higher level.
Getting wasted in Adelaide is worse IMO. Alcohol in an unknown city full of rabid footy supporters. A lot of things can go wrong.

For me it's more the mindset and attitude.
Also respect.
True. But if other players are allowed its not really a Motlop issue it's a club issue.
Mindset and attitude problems are something people should be upset with the club about if they think it's a problem.
Would still prefer that to alcohol. Better for fitness and less chance of getting into fights etc.

Honestly if he was on the pingers it's not really that bad. Would be better for his fitness than drinking.
Not that I agree with it. It is poor form this close to finals but if it was just that it's not quite as bad as people think.

Yeah a lot of players go down this path as it actually the healthier option compared to booze.

But even still, during the season and so close to finals it's probably time to lay off

I agree. As an outsider I would of thought most players playing finals would be laying off everything.
I dunno how clubs/ players work though. Don't know how normal it is.

This is becoming a real issue. For me anyway. Excuse me if I sort out my thoughts on this page.

I love the way Steve Motlop plays. He has the X factor we lack.

I have also come to really dislike his inconsistency. His efforts v Richmond and then Collingwood are so far divorced from one another, I can hardly believe I was watching the same player.

It has come to a head and to the clubs credit (IMO) they have engineered a solution we can all (Steve as well) live with:

GFC knew at the end of the trade period last year that Motlop was unlikely to be picked up by another club on the money he was earning. I can't believe there wouldn't have been interest but GFC would have had to carry some of his salary into this year (IMO).

Since then they have waited to see how Steve responded. He has been selected regularly even if his output suggested he was out of form or out of confidence. A few weeks ago GFC disclosed their position by choosing not to select him for 4 weeks (unfortunately suspensions etc left the cupboard bare) and he was selected 2 weeks earlier. At that time Cookie and others stated clearly they will wait until years end before anything is done about a contract for Steve.

This signalled to to all other clubs that Motlop will be available (as a restricted free agent). Once offers are on the table GFC can make up their mind what they do. But they are in the drivers seat. Outcomes?

1. Motlop gets a good offer we accept - we get a reasonable compensation pick (2nd RD?) . Win for Mots and GFC.
2. Motlop gets a more modest offer (and the GFC compensation would not be so juicy (3rd/4th Rd?) then:

a. We keep mots on a much lower salary by matching or
b. We agree to let him go clearing the books entirely.
AND Mots gets to have input. Do you want to stay and rebuild form /confidence / trust on this lower salary or move on.

I am happy with any of the three possible outcomes. The tragic in me prefers Motop stays on a much lower salary.

FWIW I don't hold Mots to a higher level in this sense..
I don't want any of them doing it... there should be a line there for and the whole playing list buys into it IMO
