With Dusty Martin rejecting North, maybe they've got some bulk cash to throw at Stevie Motlop. . . . . . . . end of first/start of 2nd round compo?

Or Mots plays the September of his life wins the Norm smith and gets offered a new contract!!

Could North get into him given they've not been able to attract one of the really big fish?

If they get desperate maybe but i doubt motlop will want to go there (he will want a finals side).

Sorry to intrude - Was just keen to read your thoughts on Motlop and it seems its the same as other supporters - brilliant when he is on but frustrated that its not more often.

Denham mentioned him to North this morning as something North should do but some North insiders have mentioned that the Motlop's hold a strong grudge against North from the Daniel Motlop days and how his trade from the club was handled (and Daniel in general) and that North will likely never have a Motlop consider coming to the club again such is the level of grudge against the club.

Unless Steven is wanting to be a full time midfielder and sees that future at North Im not sure why he would want to come at the moment. He is in the second half of his career - I have no idea why he would want to leave your club while you have Dangerwood - you will be playing finals for years to come with those 2.

He doesn't. This is a club-initiated thing.

Haha, you want 2 cents' worth, ok.

Well, Motlop is one of the biggest mixed bags I've seen in the AFL, and I'm old enough to have watched Geelong sides try and defend seven-goal leads in the early 90s.

At his best, he's fantastic - hard-running, brilliant goal sense, line-breaking, and, perhaps more so a few years ago than now, great agility. He has that really rare quality of being able to step through congestion while still driving the ball forward, his pace is electric, and he's more than capable (in a good side) of averaging twenty touches and two goals per game. The other thing about him that is rare, and excellent, is his delivery into the forward line.

The problem with that is that his best doesn't really come to the fore against the better sides. He's not Robinson Crusoe down here at the Cattery on this front over the last few years, but his finals record is poor compared to his regular-season output. I think that the main reason for this is that if he's not receiving the footy, he's not getting the footy - he is the classic definition of an "outside" player who relies on distribution, space to accelerate, and hard running to win the footy. Ergo, in games like the big-money clashes we've played against Hawthorn over 2013-16, space has been tight and he has struggled.

Aside from being reliant on having the game played on his terms, his other major technical drawback as a footballer is that he's very one-footed. He has a classic highlights reel of inside-out banana goals - because he can't kick a decent left-foot droppie to save himself. He's usually able to use his pace to get on the preferred foot, but that's not a great option.

Also in the negative column is his chasing, tackling and second efforts. There was a debate around this board on Motlop vs Rioli in 2013 and 2015 - that's since died, and this is one major reason why. He's also fairly hungry around goal, and not a great decision-maker - there was a moment extremely late in the QF against Hawthorn where we were a few points up, he was chasing a loose footy (1 vs 2) hemmed in by the boundary line, went to snap the miracle goal, kicked a point - the worst possible outcome - and Hawthorn swept the ball north, only for Isaac Smith to miss. It was only one moment but it summed it up.

However, the biggest issue with Mots is the public perception of his commitment. In mid-2015, when Richmond and North were in his ear and the contract was still under negotiation, he pulled out six weeks of absolute highlight-reel footy - serious, top-shelf stuff. In the same week that it was announced that Stokes, SJ and Kelly weren't being retained, he was rewarded with a nice, fat contract, and returned for 2016 preseason looking as though he'd blown the lot on pies. He proceeded to pull out an ordinary year, where he played some good games in big wins, and a couple of shockers. That's the problem - when the chips are down, he's kindof the anti-Selwood and lacks for urgency and motivation. If you could get Good Motlop to turn up every week, you'd have one hell of a player on your hands.

Can't see him going to north unless they offer huge money and even then the issues between them and daniel will probably stop it. Still port i reckon if he doesn't stay here.

To me it sort of aligns to the Monty Hall Problem ... Its not so much what they chose to do at the start..its seeing what is behind door number 3 ..that its a failed choice... now you do keep going with what you were doing , with the hope and "knowledge" that what you do and have chosen to do works... or do you swap.
Early 2000's , I presume we are talking about the idiot years of 18-23.. but if you still doing the same stuff at 25 /26 you really have not advanced your knowledge base much.

Sometimes guys with heap of talent fail to realise that talent is not a permeant resident ..its just an enjoyable stranger that stays a while... but like the song says...

It was an early morning yesterday
I was up before the dawn
And I really have enjoyed my stay
But I must be moving on
Like a king without a castle
Like a queen without a throne
I'm an early morning lover
And I must be moving on

But I thought you were Daenerys Stormborn

How much do AFL players put value on playing finals and Premierships? One may say that they all live and die on it...but I suspect not all players look at in the same way. Some want their cake and eat it too... If it comes down to having his wage halved would any player stay or would he move even if it means less team success.

Although, there is the interstate factor plus the fact that he'll be competing with Robbie Gray and Chad Wingard for that forward-of-the-ball mid role.

Richmond *was* the obvious fit, but now they can't afford anyone.

How much would they have to offer for us to receive a round 1 compensation?

Quite a lot, depends on ladder position and also some kind of paradigm the AFL have. I reckon 600k+ and we'd be lucky to get a first rounder right at the tail end. Reckon He'd most likely go for a pick between 25-35 on a deal around the 400k mark. If I'm not mistaken we can match and opt to trade?

EDIT: Tiges got pick 26 for Vickery who was offered 500k a season and they finished 13th.

I don't know too much about how FA works with compensation but yes Motlop is Restricted, so we have the ability to match the offer and then force a trade

Its not something that is open book ... and now that the SC has been raised it will most likely have gone up. Id have little hope that Motlop would be worth R1 now ... it would only be the top level talents on ..my guess 700/800+ .. Its age as well.

Thats a double edged sword.. If a club matches it commits to pay him that contract. Lets say North offer 600... we match... SM may well say thanks im happy enough at Geelong now and we have to pay him the terms of the matched bid.

Has the club actually publically said he is on offer? People seem to be very convinced of what the club is thinking internally.

Evidence is mounting that his performance this year has been injury related and he may well have a lot more to offer.

If the club were hypothetically able to mutually agree on a 1 year "prove yourself " contract what would people's reaction be?

Yes - there are a number of factors, and contract is one.

The only factors are the age of player length of contract (years) and size ($ per year) of contract at the new club.
