Success of the mini draft

One wonders whether GWS getting pick four in a depleted draft for Jaegar O'Meara will be viewed as badly as Fremantle's early trades.

Mini draft was a complete and utter failure. It was never going to achieve what it was designed for and the AFL should've seen that before it even was offered.

Idea - Clubs trade established quality players for the best young talent so GWS get some established players to begin with.

Reality - clubs that were in their finals window unwilling to trade established players for someone, regardless of talent who wouldn't be able to play the following season and would take at least 3 season before the club really reaped the benefits of them. Clubs developing were unwilling to trade established players because they were required to help bring through the younger talent to take them forward.

Result - clubs were only willing to offer draft picks, which in turn meant that the clubs already at the bottom of the ladder with the lowest draft picks were in prime position to trade because they had the least to lose and most to gain.

GC were laughing, they had a 5 year plan to reach finals and be able to compete with the top teams, sacrificing early picks for these players was never an issue with a list full of young talent that is still developing and would have such a little impact on the development plan of the squad that it was madness not to do it.
Melbourne had also realised they had to rebuild over an extended period and took the same view to get Hogan.
Adelaide saw the light and made sure they got on board and were the only team with an established list to really capitalise on it.

Future result - shows again the incompetence of the AFL to really think out a plan long term to work out what the consequences will be. Obviously created by the same people who sit on the rules committee.

It might seem like a great idea at the moment, but by trading for those players the Crows, Dees and Suns have handed GWS 4(!) extra first round draft picks and only picked up 1-2 themselves. Let's hope Crouch outperforms Hoskin-Elliott, O'Rourke, Plowman and Sumner combined, because if they don't the Crows (along with everyone else) will find it extremely difficult to overcome GWS in the back end of this decade.

Seeing as all 4 of those players struggle to make a mediocre side, you'd say thats a win for Melb, Adel, GC at this stage, given that GC and Adel have already got players who are top 5 on their list.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe these players were picked up with similar rules to the way GC picked up McKenzie, Matera, Nicholls and GWS picked up Bugg, Shiel, Treloar and Cameron

would've loved Brad Crouch at the dogs. If i'm not mistaken our offer ended up being better than Adelaide's. Stuff you Gws

Isn't Jaeger O'Meara in the Lloyd/Lucas/Wirrpanda etc. boat of players that Freo never actually had access to, rather than the Bell/McLeod/etc. boat of players they gave up for magic beans?
That's my point. Freo still get criticised for never picking up Lloyd, when they had no access to him, and no trade currency (Lloyd was awarded after Fremantle had taken their player selections). GWS by contrast could sell their access to the highest bidder. Pick four in a compromised draft seems way under.

The main effect of the minidraft was that it made GWS weaker and Goldcoast stronger. If thats what you wanted then yes it was a success. Sure, GWS got some high picks but they would be even stronger with Jaeger O'meara instead of Lachie Whitfield and this year they could take Jack Martin instead of Tom Boyd, which they probably need more.

It may be under, but in all likeliness it was the highest bid. If someone offered something better, why would they accept pick 4? Clubs weren't interested in offering their superstars for unproven 18 year olds, and GWS weren't interested in players that don't have the potential to be guns.

Securing the GC/Melbourne picks was never about securing specific players in the 2011/2012 drafts, it was about maintaining a scattergun approach on draft day.

Plenty of clubs were prepared to trade experienced players, Fremantle one of them, the ilk of Ibbotson & Duffield were floated. Not just one player, but a package of two and perhaps a draft pick. GWS solely wanted either A grade players or draft picks.

They would be in a far better state now and long term had they taken two players each from AFL clubs under the arrangement.

We didn't rort the mini draft. We wanted players. Nobody wanted to trade players so we took draft picks instead. O'Meara is a gun, so is Crouch. They were worth a decent player, but if your team only wanted to give up journeymen and spuds its no wonder we took the draft picks instead.

If O'Meara was on the trade table tomorrow, what would he attract? Something better than a spud, that's for certain.

Don't blame us if your club didn't want to play ball.

I think they've been a disaster. They provided Gold Coast and GWS with unnecessary advantage on top of their generous array of draft and other allowances. If they hadn't had the mini draft, both teams already had more than enough assistance to ensure they will have on-field success within a five year period of entering the AFL.

I would strongly oppose the use of the mini draft, or any similar concept, in any circumstances in the future. Their use will create a culture of dependence and entitlement from clubs who finish near the bottom of the ladder. The opportunities provided by the draft, free agency and trading of players is sufficient.
This. **** the mini draft.
