Swans into top 4.

sssshhhh...we are rebuilding, have a team full of old men....keep the lid on it, seriously. Have a number of tough games coming up....ssssshhhh

Yeah, We have all old men in our team. I have no idea when where going to give the likes of Moore, McVeigh, Jack, Malceski, Barlow, or an 18yo like Bird a crack at the big time.

Were still to prove ourselves but we've got Collingwood in a couple of weeks.

But for those without pay the Swans have come back from the break in better form and with a better forward structure than was in existence before it. I'm not making bold predictions but the side is playing pretty well right now.

Swans are a good, hard, disciplined side no doubt about it and they have done amazingly well over the last decade or so. However, its just hard to see them being able to beat Hawks, Cats or Bulldogs in Victoria. Or even Collingwood, who they have struggled against the last couple of years. They are not entirely without a chance however, and a bit of a dark horse, but personally I think of Adelaide as being more of a dark horse.

I tipped us at the start of the year to finish 7-9th, as of right now i would say we are a top 5 side, i will be reserving to say we are a top 4 side after seeing how we fare against Collingwood x2, Hawthorn, Adelaide and Geelong.

If we dont win at least 1 game against Collingwood and the game against Hawthorn then we are not a top 4 side simple :)

With no disrespect to the Cats or the Dogs, but Sydney is always the side i'm most nervous about playing. They've had the wood over us for quite a long time. Hell, even when they were trying to lose apparently they almost beat us in the pre-season! :p

So yeah, I rate Sydney highly, and wouldn't like to play them in the finals. Having said that, I was thinking the same thing about Adelaide last year. Really looking forward to our match in a few rounds, just to see if we've improved against your lot!

I think we're a better, deeper team than we were last year. We always get better as the season goes on. Given the impact thus far of youngsters like Jack, Bird and Bulldog Moore, as well as the vast improvement of relative youngsters McVeigh and Bevan we could be a whole lot better by the time September rolls around. The Stakerisor led the comp in dropped marks last year but he looks to be back to his best and took 11 marks in limitted time in his return to the ring against the Aints. Fearless Fosdike has been an absolute fixture in our midfield but he was injured in the preseason and cannot get back in. Tim Schmidt had a good debut season for us last year and he kicked the go ahead goal and got an assist on the sealer against the Power in his first game back - but got dropped for the next game. There are others, of whom Nick Davis is not the least, who've played decent senior football for us but cannot get in the side.

The Greatest Team Of All beat us in our first game without Barry Braddock, I was there and we were an absolute rabble up forward. If we'd played them this round they would have gone in (correctly) as favourites, but we certainly would have been a better team than we were in Round 5 - and I think we'll be better again come September.

Of all the teams we would have to beat to get to the top of the heap the one that worries me the most is the Geelong-killing Maggies. Be interested to see how Bevan, Jack and Bird fare against Didak, Neon and Daisy.

EDIT:The Crowbots looked a rabble against the Bombers. They dropped one at home against The Bloody Jeffs yesterday and have Brisbane at the Gabbatoir up next, followed by T.G.T.O.A. and then the Pies. Hmmmm...

Sydney will be dangerous if they make the top 4, especially for sides that love an expansive, high possession game, as Sydney will lock them down and strangle them.

Even if they do finish outside the 4, they could cause some serious headaches for a side like the Bulldogs or Hawthorn due mainly to the relative lack of experience in finals of the aforementioned two compared with Sydney's great finals record recently.

Sydney is the dangerous floater, Phillippoussis style.

Hawks seem to have got over the Crows hoodoo, but haven't done the same with the Swans hoodoo. IMO the Dogs were lucky to beat Sydney earlier in the year, only some very straight kicking kept them in front after they got the jump, and the flow of the game was Sydney's way - I'd like to see a rematch and it's every chance to happen in a final played in a much different atmosphere. As for the Cats, the Swans are capable of beating them on their day.

you guys have been bottoming out for nearly a decade now...

swans won in 05, competed in 06, and made the finals in 07, but everyone was talking about their decline. and yet they're still in the top teams in the afl....

they are a quality side. carlton on the other hand are a long way off...cant wait for your reality check tomorrow

It was quite the reality check wasn't it? :thumbsu:

Uh, no.

Because you're not actually very good. Beat somebody above you on the ladder and then we might rate you.

Geelong, Hawthorn and the Dogs have you blokes covered.

Which decent sides have you beaten this year? Or does beating up on Melbourne, West Coast and Richmond count as some sort of achievement?

Um Hawthorn dont have them covered and yes i am worried...........

We've had a fairly easy run over the past 5 weeks, so although I'm happy ro be sitting in 4th, I'm certainly not convinced we'll be there be seasons end. Where we finish will hinge on how we fare at both home and in Melb against the Pies. We typically struggle against them - 2 losses and we're gone, 2 wins and we'll be looking good come September.

The Swans are going to be very dangerous imo. Especially if they can stay in the top four.

The injury/suspension to Barry Hall was a blessing. Made a number of their players stand up during his absence. If they can continue that with Barry back they will be a danger to all they face.

Winning against Port in Adelaide, and a WC team with few goals left in the season other than beating their GF rival of recent years, all without Hall is not an easy run.

If we played Geelong in Sydney next week, we'd be favourites.

Hawthorn...easy.

Doggies. Finals pressure ?

I'd say it's been a relatively easy 5 weeks. At least compared to the Pies X 2, Geelong, Bullies, Hawthorn and Adelaide all to come. Not trying to take away from the team, but the rest of the season will be a better gauge of where we're at than the previous month.

Hawthorn easy? Not on your life. Doggies will just gain more momentum as the season continues, and Geelong is Geelong at home or away - we'd never be favourites to win that and deservedly so.

We're just starting to gain momentum after players have started finding their niches and settling into their roles. Apart from that, how much we have really improved from last year will be evident in 2 weeks against Collingwood - until we show something there, win OR loss, I'll be reserved on our being top 4 by a performance basis in the least.

Out of the top 3, here's my list, in terms of who I'm most worried about playing:

1. Collingwood
2. Hawthorn
3. Geelong

The thought of matching up Lance Franklin terrifies me. We have no backman quick enough to keep up with him. Bolton or Richards are our best bet, which is scary because he's about 4-foot taller than both of them.

Collingwood's midfield worries me, as does Geelong's, but I think we have a chance at taking down those two.
