Sydney's record in grand finals needs scrutinising

Follow a team that has won zero Premierships and then Come back to me.

At least you can watch the 1990 and 2010 grand final moments on DVD or YouTube.

Rarely please you is better than never please you.
They are bloody hard to get into, and bloody hard to win them. I had to wait 38 years to see the dogs make a GF and win it. It's about putting yourself in the position to challenge over and over again.

Grand Final winning % (excluding replays)

Brisbane Lions = 3/4 (75.0%)
Melbourne = 13/18 (72.2%)
Hawthorn = 13/19 (68.4%)
Adelaide = 2/3 (66.7%)
Fitzroy = 8/13 (61.5%)
West Coast = 4/7 (57.1%)
Carlton = 16/29 (55.2%)
Richmond = 13/24 (54.2%)
Geelong = 10/19 (52.6%)
Essendon = 14/28 (50.0%) - 1897 and 1924 didn't have a GF.
Western Bulldogs = 2/4 (50.0%)
Port Adelaide = 1/2 (50.0%)
North Melbourne = 4/9 (44.4%)
Collingwood = 15/42 (35.7%)
Sydney = 5/18 (27.8%) - includes South Melbourne record
St Kilda = 1/7 (14.3%)
Fremantle = 0/1 (0.0%)
GWS = 0/1 (0.0%)

Not trying to kick the Swans while they're down, but it's always surprised me this record doesn't get talked about more in the media compared to Collingwood and St Kilda for example.

I dunno it's easy to hang shit in them from the cheap seats.

It's a great effort to get there and sometimes it isn't your day. I recon they looked shot in the second half of last week to be honest. They came up against a good Geelong side who for once were very healthy come September.

Kudos to them for generally being constantly competitive over the last couple of decades. How about some scrutiny on the 16 clubs that were worse than them this year?

I think all clubs should be able to count premierships from all their history since their inception. The logic would be that you can only play in the competition you are in at the time. So in the dogs case, they would be 11 wins, 7 losses I think.

Carlton is around 22 premierships , but Port Adelaide has the most by far from Memory around 35.

St Kilda's record is the most tragic, especially when you count the wooden spoons too

This is just my opinion but Swans pre Buddy just seemed like a team that would give you 200% all day. Not the most talented players but never got smashed cause they gave everything. Like in 2012 I felt hawks were a much stronger team but credit go the swans they got it done.

Since they got Buddy there like the opposite a team full of star players that when the heat comes on they just can’t stand the heat. It’s not just GF too
  • QF loss to Giants in 16
  • EF loss to GWS last year
  • SF loss to Roos in 15
  • GWS destroying them in I think 18 in a EF

Just a complete 180 to me. I think they missed Kennedy today even if he’s cooked guy Is one Swan who plays his best on big games. But then others like Heeney, Parker (felt he was ok today), Papley, Mills, Rampe these A grade players and leaders just haven’t seemed to stand up when the heats on in the way Bolton, O”Keefe, Hanners, Goodes, Malceski all seemed to do in their era.

St Kilda shouldn’t even exist in all honesty. In 125 years the Saints have won as many finals as Joel Selwood in his 16 seasons.

I honestly don't know which way to swing with that. How incredible is Joel Selwood and how ******* pathetic are St Kilda?

2-*2-9 in my lifetime, and I won't count the year I was born (which of course is another loss)

*77,77,79,80,81,90,02,03,*10,10,11,18

I'm sure you'd know, losing GF's is more painful than winning the spoon (I know both), now amplify that pain x9.

Does the term forever tease but rarely please mean anything to you?

He's referring to Collingwood's Grand Final record, but he formatted it incorrectly.

15 wins, 2 draws, 27 losses = 44 Grand Finals
Apologies

So what does it look like IF we include replays?

Ummm, wow.

So they're 3-8 and 2-5, overall 5-13

Here's a figure for you op if you want to 'scrutinize' a club

15-2-44. Pretty sure you'll work it out.

Not even sure how this is a thread.

Still a better GF winning record than Sydney. Only just.

As a clubs, they’re both poor returns but the record of a team in 1945 doesn’t have any relevance to 2014 or even 2022.

Melbourne and Hawthorn have great strike rates in GF’s but much of those are the most dominant teams in any eras.

Also people forget despite Geelong losing those GFs in the late 80s/early 90s they were so exciting and attacking.

92 they were insane. Kicked 25-30+ a few times.

Just we were so good defensively and could at worst break even in the middle we matched up well v them and Matera dancing around the G helped
