Oppo Camp Taylor Adams (Traded to Swans 2023)

If Collingwood want to put more games into next generation players than they managed in 2023 ( which was close to none) then some senior players will have been advised that their spot in the best 22 is not guaranteed. Especially injury prone players. If this has happened with Adams and he believes there are better opportunities at the Swans where he can prolong his career by a year or so then that’s understandable. It’s the harsh reality of list management.

We must open up doors for macrae McInnes Allan Harrison Kreuger Ryan etc etc next year if we are to stay competitive.

Ray Shaw retired because Hafey told him to piss off. Your second sentence is meaningless - Adams just played his most games and is still strong and quick
I wonder if Adams may be thinking a change of scene may change his luck. Two hamstring injuries in successive finals series is heartbreaking.

Hopefully he decides to stay because he definitely has quality footy ahead of him.

He started his career in Sydney, it’s only fitting he should end it there.
I don’t understand why that would be fitting. Better to end his career at Collingwood with a flag.

If up and comers are good enough they push players out. He just turned 30, not 34. Macrae as his likely replacement is very unlikely to produce in 24 what Tay gave us in 23.

Maybe, maybe not.

The question also is what macrae can produce in 2025 and whether another year slogging away in the vfl in 2024 is detrimental to his development to get to the standard adams has delivered over his career.

It would, but most careers don’t end in fairytales.
He has a contract with the reigning premiers. Excellent chance to finish with a flag or two. This group is not done, if he walks it will be a mistake.

Last year was a very bad groin tear. This year was the mildest of hammies.

I get that argument - but expecting Macrae to get to Tay’s standard is very wishful thinking. It’d be great if it happens.

Tough one. Such a heart and soul player. And uninjured, still commands a spot. But the list is ageing and especially in that context, staying still is going backwards. If Taylor can get 2-3yrs at Sydney and we get something handy, maybe it’s a win win.
I’m not convinced our premiership window stays open if we don’t make some bold calls. And/or maybe we need to take a step back in 2024 to access greater longevity as a legitimate challenger in the medium term. Develop some younger talent etc.
I wonder what we’d get for Taylor. Clearly not first round and perhaps not even second. Maybe a pick upgrade or a handy but superfluous to Sydney player?
If this happens, I wouldnt fo it for less then an early 2nd. Sydney need his style of player badly because him and Grundy opens up their premiership window again. He is perfect for them and Sydney would be deperate to secure him. It sounds crazy but my starting price would be pick 11 even if we have to pay his salary for next year. I would also do pick 11 f or Adams and Carltons 2nd or pick 11 for Adams and pick 18. But I would mostly prefer to keep Adams rather than trade him to Sydney. I prefer he goes to a WC, North or Hawthorn like team.

It’s not specially a macrae vs adams argument ( it might be McInnes or Allan for example) , there’s a bigger list management question at play.

We have a lot of players over 30 and if we turn them over progressively over the next few years that’s a better approach than losing them all at once.

If adams gets offered three years and we can only offer two and no guarantee he will be best 22, then that’s pretty simple maths for Tay.

It’s detrimental to his prospects of staying with Collingwood to see out that 2025.

We'd poach.

Maybe but given the number over over 30s on the list nearing retirement it’s a stretch to expect to replace them all via poaching.

If we have faith in our vfl list and the club by and large seems to have faith, then no need to poach. Just retain them and give them opportunities.

Anyway if Tay stays, great but if he goes, it will be for his betterment if he can snag a three year deal

Looked miserable tonight

I hate this. I love Adams and it kills me to think of him being unhappy. Such a warrior for us over many years.

I’m hoping this is all just ‘manager stuff’ which will go away, but if there is more to it I hope it’s the best for Taylor. We owe him that.

What makes you think they've got faith in the VFL list?

I'm not talking about poaching 5. Hopefully 1 or two of the kids come through. There's still improvement in Nick, Hill, McCreery and Ginni. Mature role players can be found cheaply. It's whether we can replace the guns who leave.

I think we should be finalists for the next few years - after that is always a guess and needs a fair bit to go right.

Bit of an initially shock but then you think about it and you can see why a little bit. At the end of the day he is contracted and a required player. If he asks for a trade, Sydney will need to compensate at the rate of a contracted and required player. They would need to offer a little overs for us to do any deal or involve another club in the deal to get it done. Especially with us being in the window and I think we probably think they are as well

Happy if Tay stays but I thought this year with the arrival of Mitchell we carried one plodding senior midfielder too many . The fact we didn’t miss a beat when adams copped his predicable but untimely injury suggests to me he’s not essential to staying in the premiership window, especially if the cost is a matching a three year contract offer and ongoing restricted opportunities for macrae and others.

Maybe it’s best to turn over one of our veterans a year or two before 7-8 of them all retire at once
