Oppo Camp Taylor Adams (Traded to Swans 2023)

I would hope our coaches aren't thinking of having Adams play at half back in the long term. He lacks the speed for it and his kicking will get exposed by teams that apply more pressure than the extremely flat Essendon team we played yesterday.

If any of our mids should be trialled and shifted there in the long run it should be Crisp. Tough, excellent defensively, tall, good mark, good kick and great speed.

Seems like with Pendles and Adams playing there we're experimenting with the wrong mids to rotate at half back.

I'm with you. I also genuinely don't know where the jubilation over his footskill has come from!

His foot skills have been better. That play where he side stepped, accelerated through traffic and hit up a target with a bullet pass in the middle was a good example of that improvement. He is doing that more consistently.

I know he started as a half back most stoppages but he looked like a mid straight after the centre bounce. I hope the coaching staff don't use this performance to justify playing him at half back.

We then also have examples where he was used as the outlet and under no pressure either kicked to a contest or direct to the opposition as he did on more than one occasion on Monday.

I'm certain that he's improved overall as he's developed greater consistency in his game and improved his transition running, but skill by foot isn't an area he's improved to a level of note, IMO.

Personally I'd equate his skill improvement to the development we've seen in Williams' kicking.

You're a very very harsh judge if you don't think it has improved.... He's gone from scrubbing every 2-3 kicks to actually hitting up most targets with confidence.

I guess it's a choice to be made ...

(1) Do our players be dynamic and quickly deliver to an option? (sometimes fluffing it ...)

... Or ...

(2) Or do they stop. Be static. Look around. Assess all the available options. Make the best decision. Be stagnant?

Perhaps the instruction to the players last week was "Be brave!"? That would have fit in with the occasion. And the decision making that was on display. Many mistakes were made but also many lessons would have been learnt.

I think you've misunderstood me. I initially commented that I didn't see the need for jubilation over his skill by foot. That might have been a poor choice of word, but Monday was the only time this season that his skills have looked noticeably better and even then he still made mistakes plus it was the lowest pressure match we'll be involved in all year.

I also acknowledged that he has improved, but it's akin to the improvement we've seen in Williams' kicking aka it's gone from slightly above poor to a little better than below average. In other words he's gotten rid of the howlers, but is far from a "safe" user of the ball.

Definitely option 1! I want players taking the game on I think it's more about who's doing it and execution that concerns me.

Interesting to bring up Williams, not that I disagree with you but due to the fact that he and Adams have totally different reasons for their poor kicking in the past.

Adams problems are largely technique related. His ball drop is bad, he drops it from too high on most occasions, leaving a lot of room for error. You can see now that he is really concentrating on that drop when he kicks by leaning forward more. His drop is still not perfect but better and his kicking has improved.

Williams on the other hand has a very good action and ball drop. It's mostly decision making with him and i think a tendency to take his eye off the ball and look up at the target too soon. Plus, I don't think he is a player with "touch", he's more a power player - so the dinky kicks aren't his thing.

I think the fact he's gone from an awful kick to an average/ok kick is people's cause for jubilation.

12 months ago you'd have your heart in your mouth every time Adams dropped it on the boot. Now most of the time you'd be confident that he won't completely balls it up. Obviously there's work to do still, but the improvement is definitely there.

Taylor Adams for Heath Shaw, wow what a trade. Clubs should try and trade with us, it usually turns out to a win, win. Except for the Bears, we own them at the trade table.
Seems like a win-win now, but Collingwood are going to come out of it well and truly on top seeing as in a few years time Heater will be retired whereas Tay will be dominating in our midfield for the next decade.

That's fair enough, but I just can't justify it personally. Being average is really cream of the crap and probably a generous assessment anyway, IMO.

For instance the only Hawthorn midfielder with comparable skill by foot getting regular game time is Langford. Given that's the benchmark I'll hold my praise until his footskills take the next step from here and he does it consistently against AFL opposition (of which Essendon is not).

About as much as Adams did in his first 2 seasons. Don't get me wrong. Adams will play a lot of games. But he wont be anything outstanding. Just serviceable.
Wow, just reading back over this thread, and the response here to what Adams did over his first two seasons compared to Toumpas...

There's some genuinely funny stuff in this thread, dotted around the genuine concern over his disposal in year 1 with us :drunk:

Completely disagree. Adams has a great footy brain, reads the play to perfection and will only improve. Not to say he will or should play half back every week but he's a really good option to throw down there at times.

I don't get the Crisp across half back thing. He's shown a good knack to kick a goal, mostly last season. Plus he's a very good inside player, I'd leave him where he plays his best footy.

In my first post in the welcome thread I said that I had a feeling this guy would become my fav player.
He hasn't let me down. Personally I thought he deserved the medal but happy with Sidey as well.

Yep, thought he earned the chocolates with his best game to date.

Just had a quick run through the whole thread and all I can say is PHEW!

It's staggering if you can't see a noticeable improvement in Tays kicking this season.

Yep, but still the biggest flaw in his game.
