Taylor Walker new Adelaide captain

The Crows would want to have a strong year this season. Hired an unknown coach, a odd captain choice. They are in danger of becoming irrelevant in AFL circles.

I was thinking in terms of personality.

Their personalities are actually quite similar.

Walker doesn't appear to have the mental demons that Fevola had, and has a better work ethic. But their general demeanour is very similar - both really knockabout lads who are essentially good blokes.

Last time I checked, Taylor hasn't urinated against the window of restaurants, or got involved in brawls in Irish pubs ..... or had his captain so annoyed with him he kicked him out of the club ... among all the other acts of sheer stupidity Fevola has created. Taylor Walker is a good bloke, Fevola's a freakin' idiot. Huge difference.

Never underestimate the power of mental illness

Walker re-signing his contract so early screamed 'I want to be at this club and I want it to succeed', and Im putting money on him taking a reduced pay cut as well. He leads by example, is blunt and to the point and isn't a soft player. Coming off injury he'll be in the top 5 players there with ease. Good choice for captain - only concern would be whether having a midfielder as a captain is more effective in terms of gauging the way the game is going/leading by example etc.

Hahaha yeah he comes across as the drill sergeant type, going to be interesting how the team responds kind of like how GC will respond to Rodney Eade's tough approach.

The team is loving it from all reports and what I have seen at training. It was what they wanted, clear communication and understanding of what is expected of everyone. The complete opposite to Sando's coaching where players were unsure what they should be doing.

- Hand picked by an individual promising a tough new vision (Roo vs Cam Schwab)
- Tough talk about bringing in his version of leadership and discipline
- Possibly questionable mature age recruits who wont solve problems (Cheney and Lowden)
- Unexpected captaincy decision

That said Adelaide's list is leagues ahead of Melbourne's when Neeld took over and there's a whole bunch of successful tough talking coaches over the years. So I'm not saying Walsh will be anything like Neeld, but I can understand that he's giving off a similar vibe.

So 23 and 25 are questionable mature age recruits who won't solve problems? You mean the lack of any viable back up to Jacobs in ruck and to put pressure on Jenkins to lift his game even more and the loss of Otten in the third tall backman option with an ideal third tall backman who is the ultimate team man and from the best defensive unit in the league? You have no idea about the issues Adelaide has in respect to our list .

For anyone who has been watching the club closely this preseason and attended training etc, Walker was not unexpected at all.

Also Noble had a lot of say in respect to the Sando sacking and in interviews of the coaching options. People are stating most of this is Roo's doing, but Noble has a lot to do with it as well.

While I can understand the 'vibe' feeling in respect to Neeld vs Walsh there is a difference in what happened when he made the decision about Walker. He contacted Tex over the weekend and Tex asked to think about it as he hadn't even considered it might be him. Walsh then personally contacted each of the leadership group to discussion his decision. Then He, Fagan, Darren Glass and all six of the leadership group met to discuss it. There has been a lot made of the 'man conversation' and my understanding it was to do with VB being replaced and the loyalty shown by the others in respect to that. They are very happy with Tex though once it was all cleared up. Then it was ratified by the board. Walsh actually listens to the players and talks over his decisions with them as to why he wants them to do things a certain way. The key word I have heard from most players is "communication", often with a good or clear included in front of it. Neeld was we are doing this, don't argue or complain. Walsh is we are doing this and if you don't like or disagree come and talk to me and I will listen and then we will move forward.

danger and sloane had a whole season to put their hands up as captains and it's fair to say that neither exactly nailed it when given the chance. in fact, both of them had their moments at the crunch where they costs us games.

i don't blame walsh for being unconvinced by 2 guys who didn't impress when given the chance and havent signed on. however, the boost that the team had when walker came back in was plain for all to see. he's a very good leader, and you hardly have to be the world's most articulate man to tell a bunch of guys to stop being shit.

"He also has a heart of gold, connects with Crows fans of all classes and is giving with his time to charity — as highlighted recently when he turned that horrendous hairdo into $50,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

From all reports he’s grown up significantly since a major knee injury in 2013 — an injury which brought perspective to his life and allowed him to showcase his commitment to footy, and the club, by being incredibly dedicated to his rehabilitation program.

Walker fits the mould of a Wayne Carey-type captain, the most popular player in the team who can take the mark or kick the goal that inspires his teammates when they need it most."

The young man put up his hand and said he wanted to be part - a big part - of the AFC.

That's not the actions of a bogan or a dill. That is what leaders do.

Interesting press conference, from Walsh it sounds like some players didn't take it too well.

“There was some strong views expressed, and I’m up for that – I like that, but they all though understand my decision and there is 100 per cent support for Taylor Walker as captain of this footy club."

"I spoke with all the members of the leadership group over the weekend about my decision and they all had a view. Yesterday, we actually met as a senior leadership group with Darren Glass and the CEO (Andrew Fagan) and put it all out on the table. We had a conversation and we got on with it – that’s how we do business here

Players unhappy, Isn't this how Sando got sacked?

"I want to be an authentic footy club - simple as that”

Not yet an authentic footy club after 25 years?
I'm being very unfair here to the bloke, but every time I've heard him speak since he got appointed I've pictured Neeld.

Can't put my finger on it but really getting a Mark Neeld vibe from this coach. He definitely lacks warmth and is coming in with the same "what this team needs is my leadership, so do as I say" attitude.

Different group of players obviously, but Neeld also chose two very young captains that raised a few eyebrows, when there were more experienced options.

Should be interesting to see how it all plays out, either way.
Just got around to reading the rest of the thread. Great minds...

I hardly see how 'irrelevance' comes into play, even if the 'unknown coach' (he's well known in the industry and highly regarded) and 'odd captain' (has been the spiritual leader of the club for several years now) don't work out. They might not, but if we're sitting here with Stewie Dew or Brendan Bolton as coach and Dangerfield or Sloane as captain, would you still think that Adelaide would be on the verge of irrelevance if they fail to perform? Adelaide had terrible seasons in 2013 and 2014 and still had the highest average crowds in the entire league in 2014. Hardly irrelevant I would have thought. How exactly do you measure relevance?

Here, I'll try one on for your mob.

"The Pies would want to have a strong year this season. Lost Beams, coming off a shocking year, and Buckley has been far from convincing so far as a senior coach. They are in danger of becoming irrelevant in AFL circles."

The only thing worse than a troll is an ignorant troll.
