IMO the Bulldogs and the Kangaroos should be the first Victorian teams to go or Merge. They continually put there hands out for more funds. In the longer term I can see Hawthorn and Melbourne merging to become the Melbourne Hawks.

You obviously don't know a great deal about Victorian clubs, since our current CEO has come on board our financial situation has improved every year to the point that we won't need AFL assistance in a couple of years, whilst securing a $20 million redevelopement of Whitten Oval and pulling sponsors from all over the place. While Hawthorn have made a profit without AFL assistance for the last 6-7 years and despite finishing 14th will finish about breakeven.

There are way too many teams in Victoria.

And Collingwood should lead the way by merging with Melbourne.

Here's the deal:

Keep Melbourne's name.
Keep Collingwood's colours ... and the magpie emblem.

bingo ... the MELBOURNE MAGPIES ... the most marketable sporting entity in Australia.

Well perhaps then you can repay the AFL some of its money then for keeping you afloat

must be a slow news days, there will be no mergers, thanks to the TV rights and the "fair" equalisation policy, the ten Melbourne clubs will survive.

Oh yeah, happy to give up the Kangaroos handout from the AFL, as long as we get Friday night football back, its only fair, we did start it.

And the two most polar opposites as far as the fans, club culture, and hygeine is concerned.

I would start watching the EFL again is that happened. Actually stuff it, I'd just go skiing.

The Kangaroos have recieved funding twice, which is compensation for not receiving an equal number of big games, Friday night games etc. The Kangaroos have told the AFL that we don't need the funding if we get a draw that allows us to bring in people through the gates. Until they do that, and have a draw that stops certain clubs from having derbies twice a year(which helps balance their books), certain games between X and Y club(that fills their coffers) on special days, Anzac day, friday nights, then the clubs refused the right to a fair fixture will be compenstated.

Does anyone else think that we have too many Victorian clubs in the AFL that are losing their competitive edge against interstate clubs?

Bring back the merger, better than proping up clubs all the time!!
nah let's just get rid of the bummers, that sounds better to me.

i think when a team like the bulldogs that runs at a loss is spending 19.5 mil on new club rooms its time to stop propping them up if they can survive by themselves let them stay but as we all no they would soon be fuct. make them merge with the kangas or hawthorn or some one 14 team comp. with top 6 finals the way to go.

Clubs like Western Bulldogs and Kangaroos (I vaguely remember teams called Footscray and North Melbourne) are like kids that live with and bum off their parents til they’re about 30 or so.

Time to fend for yourselves in the real world kids.

In the real world, finals are just about to start and the Dockers have fallen short again. Your vagueness about other clubs is understandable given your state of perpetual disappointment.

In your analogy, btw, Freo are barely toilet-trained. My club, on the other hand, is a mature adult doing nicely for itself on and off the field. Come back when you grow up and learn what success looks like.

If success is training in third world facilities and receiving loans from your parents (the AFL - which will never be paid back) your welcome to it.

Take a look and see how long it took your mob to play their first final and to win a grand final.

You're just in a lucky generation.

success= selling home games???

idiot, the 20 million on the dogs new facilities is paid for by the Federal Government, not the AFL. Teh dogs are looking good kid, and they'll win another flag before freo, the red-headed down syndrome step child of the AFL ever does.

p.s.

How good is johnny that he spends 20 mil on a team whose supporters won't even consider voting for him next year?

20m is partly Fed Govt, part State Govt, part Local Govt, part AFL. I'm unaware of the full breakup though. The Feds take the lion share I understand.

The whole idea is Good For Football.

Campbell Rose is a GUN.

Fremantle supporters have no right to comment on this issue they are a club with the most pathetic, souless history in the comp. At least the Dogs and Roos give something to the competition: passion and exicitement. The Dockers have brought nothing but tokenism, scorn and ridicule.

Oh yeah and what it all boils down to......................

2005 AFL ladder:
Kangaroos & Dogs> Freo.

Thanks for that 1964 boy.

LOL. I just skipped to the last page knowing how ugly it would get, and I wasn't dissapointed.

For the record, yes we do have too many Victorian clubs, but no one will complain about it for the fear of their club being selected to merge.

I have a feeling we won't see a Victorian premiership for a long, long time...
