so Sam got on the national team? How? Seemed like we needed some reasoning there given the selectors were paid not to select him.

Ted should of given Nate a position on the coaching panel given he was a genius coach. Assistant coach was still a demotion from his previous job. A bit cruel to be honest to not even give him an assistant role. It was never made very clear why Nate personality and attitude changed half way through the season other then he was getting laid. He was disatisfied with being an assistent coach last season and now he is happy with even less?

Also he seemed a little too excited about beating the players he had just been coaching. Surely he would of had feelings for their plight?

Did Ted get over his anxiety issues or not? Was the message here solely that you should live near your kids no matter what? Thats all he needs to be happy?

jamie and roy are by far the best developed characters in the show. It Was great that they started focusing on jamie again in the second half of this season as he was nothing more then a minor support cast character for season 2 and the first half of season 3. At one point it almost felt like he left the show.

Dani was an underused character in the show. He should of got more air time. the Zava story was weird. He should of had more involvement in the second half of this season. was a great character. If Ted could of changed Zavas attitude then that would of been an amazing achievement.

this show finished too early. There should be more seasons.

Yeah this is a very valid point. Never really felt like they followed through with his defection and character arc.

As for the other part, actually think Zava added absolutely zero to the show. Perhaps if he'd stayed all season but he was a cameo for no real sake, other than to be an oddity in the dressing room/show.

Think it's finished at just the right time tbh. Don't know what else you'd do to it that wouldn't feel like you were just dragging it out due to the success of the show.

Disagree on Nate - his change was explored in a number of ways:

  • Less time giving a shit what people say about him on social media
  • Genuine remorse for what he did to Ted.

He enjoyed the job of being an assistant coach, but was dissatisfied with the status and validation from the public.

but most of all, the key is the scene of him playing the violin and the conversation with his father. This scene taught us that this aspect of upbringing caused him to be ultra competitive, have a real desire for superiority over others, always wanting more, and to be particularly sensitive to judgement from others.

He played the violin in this scene because "He just liked playing". We can assume he had not played in a long time, because to him, the violin was a burdensome pursuit of excellence, a quest in trying to impress others (his father's high standards), and something he couldn't enjoy any more because he was too focused on being better and better, impressing others, rather than just enjoying it. As for the getting laid part - of course that is a factor, she liked him for who he was, and this along with his improved family and friend relationships taught Nate that meaning the world to a few is more important than meaning a few things to the world.

When he just starts playing it for enjoyment, and has that confrontation with his father, he realises that his happiness comes from doing things he enjoys, for himself. Not trying to get validation from others.

And so back to coaching: in that final episode, Ted uses Nate's 'play' to win them the game. Nate is overjoyed that his idea worked and is genuinely happy. In season 1, he would have been pissed off that he didn't get public credit for it along with all the Twitter validation. Not the case any more, he is not so insecure like he used to be.

Good if not somewhat predictable finish to a great show. Nice song to go out on too with Cat Stevens' Father and Son. Whilst it had the very literal application for Ted's homecoming, the song's theme of loving yet at times difficult relationships fits the show perfectly.

It had its own feel that's for sure. Corny and camp at times, but emboldened by a real sense of pathos.

Despite its at times adult themes, it was a good show to watch with older kids due to its healthy overarching message. I think it took a stand on some social issues of our time without coming across as being condescendingly preachy.

Most of all, it was fun.

And in the decades to come, when we look back at the trials and tribulations of the COVID pandemic, Ted Lasso will be a fondly remembered part of it.
I thought the actual last song, Fight Test, was perfect. Left open some great questions about Ted and his wife and also a good reflection on parts of Ted's journey to understanding himself and being a better version of himself

Or maybe I just love that song

Yeah the writers seemed to run out of time on that one, we probably deserved a better explanation

Confronting his issues around his father and also his mother helped him a lot. I don't think he'll ever be 'cured' but we were shown a scene one point where a panic attack was coming on and he managed to keep it at bay. So he is getting better.

I don't believe there is a message saying one needs to live close to their kids no matter what to be happy. Clearly for Ted though his own feelings of abandonment from his father would have had a massive impact on this decision. He spends the whole series getting the best out of others, and he is afraid he may not do that for his son if he is away too much.

Perhaps keeping in the British tradition of short and sharp, leave them wanting more. Might be a good decision, but you are right in that there is plenty of material for them to expand upon there if they wanted to.

He was the reason they shot up the table initially. Perhaps the purpose of his character was more to provide lows for Jamie to build up from, as well as show how a team working together is more important than individual brilliance.

But yeah, he was also intended as a bit of an oddity and I'm fine with that.

Not only that, but he's relationship with Rupert played a large part of it.
He saw how much a dick was to Rupert, how he treated women etc. He didn't want to turn into that.
He also realised he left a great mentor for a bad one

I think that's right, Jamie was a changed character.

Who ended up with Keeley? I couldn't figure that out.

I was interested in that choice straight after Father and Son, the song The Flaming Lips copied/borrowed/stole/paid-tribute-to.

I agree in the end Zava added nothing. It was weird. he was the major driver of the story for 4 episodes and then he just up and left. It feels like they must of had a different intention for his story arc but then had to suddenly change and kill it. As it stands there was little reason to have introduced him in the first place.

the show was a drama about overcoming the trials of living in a modern society told through a soccer team with an unusual coach. The show has only touched on a tiny fraction of the issues that will be encountered by these people. Its the type of show that could run for a very long time. Especially if they introduced new recruits.

Keeley chose to be Keeley Jones, Independent Woman.
You can be independent while being coupled up. The message shouldnt be you need to be single.

although roy and jamie making that proposition to her was completely inconsistent with the journey those characters had been on. It made sense if they approached her with it in season 1. It made zero sense at the end of season 3.

you make some good points. still, I think it needed a far more profound reason to justify his change in thought. in regards to remorse for Ted it happened far to sharply without any major driver. He went from openly mocking him in public to suddenly being completely remorseful. There was no actual driver for this complete 180 in attitude. Having Ted in the stands watching him was not a big enough driver for this change.

there was also no sign that coaching premier league was too stressful for him and making him fall out of love with the game. He seemed to be really enjoying it and thriving in fact. The issues he had at Westham with Rupert and the girls was unrelated to coaching. So i dont think the violin scene really fits.

Roy did inappropriately ask Keeley who she made the explicit video for a few episodes back, and shown a few instances of being jealous when she's been talking with Jamie. So not totally out of character for him

It was a reference to season 2 Keeley...

and it makes perfect sense for Roy and Jamie to fight over her! Growth isn't linear. They had a moment of brutishness, came to their senses, and carried on with their friendship.

Roy angling for her again made sense, I swear Jamie never felt like he still had romantic interest up until that point.

Could just be my view of it though.

I wanted Roy to end up with the teacher. hinted at it a lot but never went there.

Great finale. They need to make more shows like this. I am not sure there has been a more likable character than Ted Lasso. Just a wonderful human being in so many senses of the word.

There will not be a show that will be more wholesome for many years I say. The Christmas episode from S1 is the most happiest I have ever been watching television.
